Just arrived!
Wow! What a feeling. Two days with the new '04 Velocity Red GT and I am running out of places to take this beast. Learned today that those stock slicks Mazda calls tires won't cut it here in Ottawa for winter. This forum is great. Thanks to everyone for all the input. It made my decision a whole lot easier.
...still can't believe I am driving this sweeeet ride. :D :D

Oh no there's another car like mine in town, OK I have seen maybe two other reds . . . Mine is hibernating so you won't see it for a while, still satisfying my need for lateral G forces on skis. Seriously though I would be very careful driving those summer tires even on perfectly dry pavement in the cold. I drove mine until the first snow in early December and the back-end breaks loose VERY easily in the cold . . . I would also be careful about letting the engine warm up very well before beating on it, it will take a while in this climate.

Thanks Scoop. Advice taken. I will be taking them off Tuesday. Went to Deals4Wheels in Kanata. Got a pretty decent quote for some aftermarket alloy rims there as well. Thought it was a shame to put on the black steel rims.
Regarding your 8, I'll keep my eye out for you later this spring.

I have bought a couple sets of tires for other cars from Deals4Wheels in the east end, didn't know there was one in Kanata. They seem to have some of the best prices around here on performance tires . . . Another thing I would look at is oil spraying the car, I never did the 8 because it is parked but I do one of my winter drivers every year. Oil spray is a bit messy in terms of over spray and making things more messy under the hood but in the end it is worth it in my mind. I use Metropolitan on Merivale, it's a few bucks cheaper than Crown. There are a bunch of other threads on this and issues surrounding drilling and not drilling. Based on the fact that my red and black winter drivers are currently the same shade of white, it might be worthy of consideration . . .
