Hi Guys,
Was just wondering if you could give me some input on my situation. I am currently looking at an RX8. It is a 2004, Velocity Red, GT with Leather, Every option except NAV. Even has the Aero Package. It has 51,000km and the price listed is $14999 CAD.
I would be trading in my 2004 Mazda6 GT. It has 90,000km on it, loaded with every option. Just wondering if you can give me an idea of what I should be thinking to spend with my trade in, or what the difference would be?
Any ideas? I want to be kind of firm when I go in. If you have any input it would be really appreciated...I want to become a part of the RX8 family!

I used kbb when I traded in my old car a couple months ago so I'd know what to expect. The dealership gave me $150 more than what kbb anticipated.

Acouple things on this.
1) The price of the car with those clicks sounds relatively reasonable.
2) Unfortunately I can't say too much about the trade in value of the 6. Trade in prices vairy widely depending on the region (Ottawa will get you less then in Toronto in most cases).
3) Are you buying from a Mazda dealer of from a used car lot? If you're buying from a dealer you shouldn't have to worry about much. They normally only take back cars which they have a full history of. If you're buying from a used car dealer, ask to take the car to an Mazda dealer and have them check it out (try to get the service manager to look at it, if the used car place gives you the name of a specific person at the dealership to get the car checked out by..be very catious). Anyways, ask the dealership to do the following:
A) Ensure that they do a clutch test (put it in 3rd.. rev to about 3-4k and drop the clutch.. if it catches right away.. the clutch is good.. if it doesn't.. well.. you'll need a new clutch sooner rather then later).
B) Have them take it for a quick drive to ensure that it feels (accellerates) the way it should.
C) Also have then check out the VIN to ensure that all the recalls have been done.
D) have them look at the remaining warantee information. See exactly how much you have left.
E) look for rust spots in the rear wheel well and the base of the door frame where the two doors join together. Sometimes a rust spot will appear there. Most of these types of rusting issues are covered under warantee.. but ask the dealership first.
4) If you're buying it right now and you plan on driving it you WILL need snow tires. Don't bother with all-season's because you'll just end up stuck on the first hill with a slight slope.
Anyways... if you go through all that.. you have a pretty good chance that you'll have a decent car.
And finally, good luck with the purchase! It'll be one of the best in your life

Thanks for the post REV-illusions.
Yes it is from a Mazda Dealer. I have done quite a bit of research on the 8 and the rotary engine, but those tips you gave me will come in handy. I am hoping to come away with the car, and only owing a couple thousand in the difference.

And on the winter tire issue. I have a great set on my Mazda6 right now, just on Steelies.....from what I can see, the bolt pattern is the same.

*You forgot to mention that it's automatic
*
For that price, I would try looking for a manual transmission if you can since you're losing out a bit of money if you're buying the automatic (less horsepower and only has 4 gears). But just my opinion.

So I just got back from the dealer.
List price of the RX8 was $14,999, they never really said what they were offering me on my car, but the final difference in price was around $8000 which I thought was kind of high. I fell in love with the car after taking it for a drive though!

If its an AUTO, seriously, please dont do it. You'll regret it.
About the pricing, that is slightly high especially if its an auto.
Dont let them push you around with magic fuzzy numbers.
Get them to lower the price, deal on the direct price... not fuzzy payments.
They like messing it up for you using payment numbers when in reality you arent really saving much.
8000$ difference, seems pretty darn high to me.

i dont like the numbers there....seems like you are getting taken for more than you should....also, i dont suggest getting an auto if you dont mind driving standard. I've driven a few autos and its such a different car. the sound isnt the same...and most hondas redline higher than an auto rx8....its just not worth all the quirks for the let down that an automatic rx8 gives you IMO. no offense to those that drive them...but the 6spd 8s are a world of difference. the handling ist still there though with the autos (as long as its a GT so it has the LSD). There are plenty of rx8s for sale...dont try and make this deal work if the sales people are screwing you. Just let them know what amount you are comfortable with and walk away when they dont budge. you might be suprised when they call you in a few weeks begging you to take the car for the price you wanted. and like i said, unless you have a huge problem with driving standard, i wouldnt get an auto....
good luck
good luck
