MazdaManiac dyno tuning in GTA - Spring/Summer 2010
#276
I used to not think the SSV performed a self test upon shut-off like the APV, but I saw it a few months ago by chance.
I had someone in the car cycling the ignition between 'ON' and 'OFF' and watched the valve cycle... to which I had a "I'll be damned" moment
Remove each one and test it:

Also clean the electrical contacts while they are out.

Then what is with all these P2070 threads?
If you look at the pics on my DIY you'll see a locking tab at the bottom of the solenoid.
You'll need to pry that back before it'll slide out (and try not to break it )

Shatter my illusions again....
You da man!! More stuff to try tonight!

Damn this is starting to turn into alot of work....I'm glad you are my guinea pig on this one haha
Edit: I can also hear my APV motor when the ignition is switched to 'on'

Should happen when you switch from on to off. Not sure if it cycles during turn on... if so I didn't detect it.
The APV motor is on the bottom of the intake manifold, above the exhaust manifold near the air pump feed tube. If you remove the passenger side wheel and stick your hand on it you can feel it working just after the ignition is switched off.
The SSV (and maybe VDI?) apparently also cycle just before the APV motor turns on, again, just after ignition is switched off.
I'll check mine tonight and report back.

After shutdown there's the metallic clicks of the air driven valves followed by the motor sound of the APV. I want to verify that the SSV and VDI open all the way up during self test.

^ yup I have my car parked between my house and garage so there is alot of sound amplification, definitely hear the click followed by an electric motor sound
but I gotta go rip my right front wheel off, gettin a kind a metalic clinkin sound when I hit bumps, can only hear it if there is a parked car or something on the side of the street to echo the sound though, thinking it is just my rock guards round my rotors

I was able to hear the APV cycling standing in front of the car... not sure if I would have been able to hear that from inside.
#286
^ thats with windows down between my stuccoed house and garage though, either way I would be damned if my motor was gonzo because the car only has 42000kms (about 25000miles)

Jon, Sorry for being a tard but I just am not seeing how to remove these solenoids. Does the vacuum side plug directly into the accumulator under the UIM? With the UIM on the car there just isn't much room up against the firewall...

Yes... it "inserts" into the vacuum chamber.
With the UIM out of the way, that little "locking tab" on the solenoid I was telling you about earlier is by the oil fill neck side.
Then the solenoid slides backwards (make sure the hose going to the actuator is disconnected).

Haha I'm such a newb, dunno if I can follow all this completely..... but I definitely hear a series of stuff, the last of which sounds like an electric motor after a click, which I'm pretty sure is the apv motor
Also found my clinking, was a tiny rock between my ock guard and my lower control arm (I think thats what it is?) right near where the lower strut mount is.

So here I go off topic agian, but just to add some conclusion to the Fog light thing:

Just in case there is any interest... I think I might play around with it

What conditions do I need to perform a vacuum test on a running engine?
I don't think that the gauge on my hand pump is going to do the job!
I did a vacuum test on the actuators for VDI, SSV and air pump.
The SSV actuator has a small leak for sure but didn't deactivate as long as there was vacuum.
The ignition off self test shows the SSV to be working well, actuating fully.
The other actuators all held vacuum. The VDI actuator moves the valve easily.
For self test the VDI did not move at all... Is it included in the self test????
I can easily hear the APV motors.
The solenoids were all open and flowing freely. I have not taking them out yet and only tested the normally open side.
That's all I could test for now. How hard is it to replace the SSV actuator?

The actuator is connected to the valve and held by a tiny e-clip that can easily pop-off and fall into the abyss.
When I pull the SSV out in this video, you'll see the actuator attached:

I think Darkbrew is still waiting for the replacement SSV actuator to show up (I believe he said he found someone to buy one from)
Both of us are still recovering from the all nighter we ended doing when we installed the Mazmart Oil Pressure modification ....

See the OP mod thread https://www.rx8club.com/series-i-tech-garage-22/mazmarts-oil-pressure-bypass-install-some-surprising-findings-189899/page9/
Actuator is in the mail. I tried to get one locally but that lead dried up
I found multiple actuators so, RotaryMachineRx, I'll pm you with where to find them if I can confirm this fix.
