ON Mazdaspeed cold air intake and winter

I have a 2006 GT which came with dealer installed wheels and Mazdaspeed cold air intake. I've had the car for a month and think it's great. I intend to drive it through the winter and I am a little concerned that the CAI might be a problem with water ingestion during the winter. I live in Kingston On. and we get a fair amount of rain and wet snow. What are some opinions and experiences with this set up in the winter?

in my opinion you will be fine. get a filter sock if you are super worried but honestly you will end up submerging half the car before you start getting the intake in deep water

After 2 years of daily driving I have decided to park my car and drive it on weekends only.

If you like to swap the intake, I have a stock intake in perfect working condition with brand new filter in it. Mind you stoclk filter from Mazda is $ 40+taxes lol..Let me know if you are intrested..

But I Agree Paimon, you won't really encounter any troubles with ms intake unless you drive trhough deep water..

I agree, I live in Massachusetts and have had cars with intakes during heavy rain and snow. You won't have a problem unless you take your 8 into a lake.

I've heard if you take your MS CAI-equipped 8 through a high-pressure touchless car wash in winter it can shoot some water into the intake which will freeze. Nobody has experience with that?

they get wet, they freeze, this is all true. I got caught in a flood, not having a CAI was a blessing. my previous experiences with a CAI they are ricey, and do not function as the oem for a daily driver. if someone wants to buy it from you and give you their oem box, I would take it. they claim at best in a perfect situation CAI are like 1 hp if that anyway.

You got caught in a flood that submerged half your engine, transmission, exhaust, differential, tires, up to your door? Must have been quite the scene.

I must be one of those miracle cases since I drive my car through new england winters, rain, sleet, snow, sun, etc, and never once had a problem with my CAI freezing or ingesting water. Not to mention that my intake is further modified to have one less bend where the filter is actually sitting closer to the ground than the original AEM/MS design.

Sometimes its best not to make assumptions when you haven't had the true experience of ownership and validation of use.

actually it was quite a flood, luckily it was just a low spot under a bridge in Maryland, maybe 30 feet long 2' deep, we had enough momentum to get through it, but when I saw water come up over the headlights my heart skipped, being on a road trip. surprisingly everything was good, would try that again, didn't see the depth of the water as it was raining so hard.

I do have personal experiences that's why I comment, I owned one before on another car. it got wet, was a pain to change the filter, didn't filter as well as oem box, made a droney rice sound. was an great 'mod'

I had a MS CAI factory installed on my 8 when I bought her too. I also use my 8 as a daily driver. Engine went at 90000km. So when Mazda replaced engine I removed CAI. Stock intake works as well if not better, its just not as loud. I would also stay away from any drive thru high pressure washes. You must keep this engine as clean and as dry as possible if you want it to last.
