**Update** Moved my car yesterday morning, hasn't started since :(

Yesterday morning like 9am I moved my car from my driveway to the street, probably running for 30 seconds, didn't think anything of it. Then last night at 9pm I get in it to go to the movies...turns over but didn't start.

Took the wifes car, read up on it last night and people were talking about pressing the throttle all the way down while cranking for 10 seconds then trying to start it which I tried this morning and still nothing It smells a little like fuel through so I'm thinking it's really flooded.

I got code P0456 2 weeks ago that might be my filler car probably not related to this but still.

Should I get it towed to the dealer? It's an 04 so I was thinking of just going there with my VIN seeing if there's any TSB's available first incase there's something cuz if not I'll just get new plugs and try that myself since I need new ones anyways.

Any advice?

Jay

Or a push start if yours is a MT. A dealer is not going to do anything for a 04 for free.

Yeah, I guess the thought of them doing a TSB on the car is probably out of the question.

I checked the DIY De-flooding, only difference then what I did was they took the fuel pump fuse out rather then pressing the gas pedal to the floor and they unplugged the air pump so I'll try that in the morning. If that doesn't work then I'll get some new plugs and some buddys to push my car back to my driveway...

I wouldn't have to worry about this crap if it was a V8 lol

How long did you try the pedal down, crank for 10s? you can't do it once or twice...you need to hook up jumper cables and try it 8 to 15 times. I'd go more like 6s at a time, let your starter rest for 20-30s between goes...do it 5 times in a row and then try to start...rinse/repeat

you can pull the fuse if the petal down method doesn't worked...it DID work for my brother though.

Push start wont work, flooding fouls the plugs and they need to be replaced. At least when I flooded mine this was the case...

Also, the dealer deflooded my 04 and installed new plugs for free... This is all covered under the extended warranty.

**UPDATE**

Ok, yesterday I tried cranking 6s then off for 30sec then 6sec etc with either my foot on the gas all the way or the fuel pump fuse and then trying to start it like normal, nothing. And trust me, I tried A LOT.

So I called around and cheapest I could find for new plugs was $250 so I said F that I ordered new plugs and wires from www.raceroots.com also ordered LS2 coils and harness plugs from E-bay, no way I was paying $575 from BHR or paying the $160 just for the harness so I bought some plugs for the LS2 coils for $20 and will make my own harness.

Anyways, while I wait for that to come in, tonight after work I tried to start it, still nothing so I jacked it up to get the plugs out, man is it ever easy with the drivers wheel out. First thing I notice was the plugs were rusty.....like I thought most likely haven't been changed EVER.

Then I took them out and this is what I found........

Size: 39.5 KB

Name: IMG_0185.jpg
Views: 92
Size: 36.9 KB

Name: IMG_0187.jpg
Views: 89
Size: 30.2 KB

So as you can see...........BRUTAL, I don't even know how the damn thing ran.

So I cleaned them with a wire brush and some brake cleaner, while they were out I cranked the engine over several times, put the plugs back in and tried again, no dice same as before.

So I tried the de-flooding method again for a while and still no start so I took the plugs out again to see if they were "flooded" and this is what they looked like:

Size: 30.5 KB

Name: IMG_0189.jpg
Views: 109
Size: 39.0 KB

Name: IMG_0191.jpg
Views: 95
Size: 34.9 KB

There's a little bit of oil deposit on there and that's it, more on the leading then the trailing plug I'm assuming that expected?

Couple questions:

-Could I have "killed" the plugs so now they don't work at all?
-If it were flooded, wouldn't it be a little more obvious when I take the plugs out?
-I bought the car used and it has 1 year GMAC warranty, not sure how they are...at what point do I just take it in?

This is the warranty I have, even still, I HATE bringing the car in.....: https://www.coverageone.ca/mic/uwc/j...s_pinnacle.jsp

Thanks for the help.

Jay

It is possible, did you check the plugs before you installed them to make sure they were still delivering spark? They could have already been dead from teh initial flooding...

It isn't like a literal flood, it is a chance occurance that when you turn the engine off the gas will be sitting on the spark plugs, which causes them to foul. Piston engines typically dont have this problem because the gas wont gather on top of the spark plugs, and they have more firing cylinders to help overcome the added resistance.

If the new coils and plugs dont do it, I would probably take it in... Figure out what your deductible is, and if that is less than the cost for a shop to replace coils and plugs then its worth it. I say that, because that will be the first thing they do, and they will work out from there.

Because few companies make OEM spec plugs for the RX-8.

Ok, still not starting I linked here as well: https://www.rx8club.com/showthread.p...83#post3256383 but will update this post.

I did the LS2 coils and new plugs but I'm getting the exact same issue as before. And after trying to crank for a little bit I pulled the Leading plug on the front rotor and this is what it looked like (crappy BB cam pic):

It didnt really smell like gas, just like oil as you can tell there's a lot on the plug for just having been turning over just a little bit of time.

Is this normal? if so, what could be wrong?

Is the fuel pump something that goes on these? Is there anything else I should be looking at?

Thanks,
Jay

check for voltage from the plug wires when you crank to see if it's even sparking at all.

Ok, here is some new info. I just checked every plug wire and I am getting spark, if it was "incorrectly timed spark" It would likely still start. Either way, it's wired correctly.

Then, I disconnected a RED line and a BLUE line on the drivers side of the car, I'm assuming this is the fuel line?

Blue looked dry where the red had some fuel so I put a hose on it and then into a water bottle....this is what came out:

That looks thinned out to me no?

While the gas seems pretty clear, I took some gas from my lawn mower and put it in a clear bottle, it's a bit darker in color and smells like gas. The stuff from the car almost smells like alcohol and has a blueish tinge to it, weird.

The night before I had the problem, I filled up at Sunoco, maybe I got bad gas?

Thoughts?

I filled up on Friday Sept 18th at 5:03pm (I keep all my gas receipts) then came home (I exit the gas station parking lot and I am on my street and I am 15 houses down) so I didn't go far. Parked the car for the night. That morning I moved it to the street then it wouldn't start ever since. Could be I still had "good gas" in the lines.

What I will do before draining it from the car, is try and use this gas from the car in my lawn mower, a lot easier to drain the little tank of the mower

I dont think I would jump to the conclusion of bad gas yet, could be, but unlikely IMO.

You sure you got all teh plug wires connected in the correct order? You checked the plugs themselves to see if they are sparking (actually sparking, not just getting voltage)?

Does that happen in these cars?

If it is I'm going to shoot myself. I spent a month diagnosing a problem on my boat and it turned out to be a damn injector..lol

Well, remove a fuel injector and verify its operation.
