thats good because now you see who your working with i guess. i was in a car club once, not for very long because the people just werent that friendly...i got the feeling if a situation like this came up, i would be left in the parking lot by myself while the others went off to the cruise. I was also in another club that ive made some real life long friends in. friend of mine was driving on a long weekend and his camshaft broke, called me during thanksgiving dinner, i put my fork down, pulled the cam from my spare engine, drove 1.5hrs to his place where he had the car towed and spent the next couple hours installing it. and he did the same for me a couple weeks after that, i hit a curb and turned my strut and control arm into pretzles. he was at my place with all kinds of suspension parts from his personally inventory, didnt leave my place until like midnight on a weekday. thats what car clubs are all about. im glad to see that this is the sort where you can count on your local chapter to help out. glad shes back up and running

The majority of Rotor heads get together when one of our own is down for the count.

We can't count a successful rotary cruise without one of us having a small mishap or technical failure. lol

I remember you posted on going to the Sunoco at Bayview and 7, they gave you top wash for X amount?

 

Yes, the Sunoco at Hwy 7 and Yonge is a TOUCHFREE and RAIL FREE wash system.

That system, I put my stamp of approval for autowash even with MS CAI on. That's a little out of the way for Thumper to use, but for anyone else around the area. That one is safe to use. I use it once a month during the winter. They are runned by indian people, I had a friendly chat with the owner one day. He says he'll offer $10 CASH price for top of the line wash at that location. (Regular price $13.99 + tax)

 

There is a shell one north of me I use to use, no rails at all. I am interested in trying it, but don't want to go thru that again in case of the same thing happening....what to do

 

Take a standard size plastic bag from supermarkets, wrap over CAI sock, and tie simple LOOSE knot before entering.

you can only do the bag thing with washers that are on a track and the track goes staight out the other side of the wash.. the last thing ya wanna do is to have to run out in the car was to try and rip the bag off the filter before the next car is piling in.

You might wanna try and find a large plastic shower cap or something instead of just a bag... there's a better chance of it staying on with the elastic at the end..

 

Hence a loose knot so it can breath.
Also with a railless and touchless carwash, you are the only car in the washbay. No one else is in there with you until you exit completely.

Is the reason why I won't be getting the air intake for the Miata. It's the same setup as the 8. And since this thing is going to be seeing winter, I want it to be trouble free.

 

Neo, I ran winter last year, trouble free... so did Eric. Okay not exactly trouble free, but my trouble was not from the design of the CAI, it was from an improper installation from the dealership.

 

In spring 2009, I'll report to you my +5HP gain I will be having this winter from the 0 C Intake-air-temperatures hehehehehehe

 

Meh dude.... meh. That's the first time I'd ever seen anything like that. I had a AEM CAI on my tib... the filter was right behind a massive air intake vent... went through the car wash without issues...

My guess for the issue was:
A) the filter is on the horizontal... so any water that gets on top of that sits there.
B) that $#@)(#^%(*@#$@$ sock just keeps the water in if some manages to get behind the it. Sure it's great for keeping the mist off the filter... but... mist isn't about to hurt the thing anyways. I freakin' went though like a roll of paper towel just pat trying the filter.. the paper towels were completely soaked after just pressing them against the filter (to the point that I could ring the water out of em).

Anyways... just guesses

I have an AEM CAI on another car with one of their air bypass valves. It's supposed to prevent water from making it up the intake into the engine. I don't know how the 8's CAI is routed, but maybe worth a look. You just cut the intake and splice it in between the two pieces.

This is what it looks like:
