My 8 won't start
#26
I am having the same problem as Scoot.
I drive my car year round so no fuel stabilizer effect.
I had engine flood about a month ago after making 3 quick stop and starts. Could not restart even with flooding start procedure.
I had a mechanic go through deflooding TSB - new plugs put in at that time.
Now it usually starts with 2-3 sec. crank but many times takes about 10 sec crank.
Today, I drove for 5km, engine temp up to half way mark. Stopped to get gas and then car cranks but would not start. Did deflooding start procedure then it started. Drove for another 5 km and parked it for about 5 hours. Started again after 3 sec crank.
Same thing happened about a week ago.
Anyone else with similar experience and any suggestions what else to do.
I am holding my breath everytime I have to start his car - it is like rolling the dice.

When was the last time you changed your plugs? They could be over due. Could be a problem with your coils too! Also be sure to change your oil often ... viscosity matters!

hot start issues are usually compression ones see if you can get someone to do a compression check.
i found that doing the rev to 4k for a few seconds before shutting off helps all cars start much faster.

Sorry if I am a little cautious but I really dislike flooding my engine so I would like to do it right.
I have run my tank to near empty, clearing out the winter stabilized fuel. I put a fresh tank in and drove to work this morning. I returned to my car shortly after shutting it off and it started normally. At this point I am not sure if I am just lucky or if the fuel was the problem.

My problem with inconsistent start is happening with new plugs in also. I had new plugs in about one month old - most expensive plugs I ever had $60 each!!
Thanks I will try to have the coils and compression test done.
I use 91 octane gas and sometimes 94 . I find 87 sluggish when driving.
Have you found any difference in starting ?

turn off while holding at 4k. i used to do it with the old starter and when my coils were bad had a hard time starting at the best and i needed all the help i could get. when ever i do the 4k hold then shut off my car seems to start quite a bit faster. just do it now out of habit.
