after two tanks of gas and getting the flash I've noticed that the hesitation at around 6500 is gone...but I also noticing that my fuel mileage has dropped a bit.

My husband brought me a RX8 for Valentines day!!! I love it, but I am getting only 14 mpg, I have read the M flash may help with the poor MPG. I was going to ask for it tomorrow when I drop off the car. Question...
Because the M flash has never been done to my car, do you need the M flash before the N flash or just the upgrade to the N flash. Any other suggestions in helping with the poor MPG will be greatly appreciated.

So i'm not sure if it did anything, he has an s2000 and we've tested WOT with both cars and we were neck and neck to 100km/h, when it gets nicer we'll do that again.. not very scientific tho :/

I went to the dealership today, and as I suspected they didnt know anything about the N flash! Which dealer did you get your N flash from???

Welcome to the club! To answer your question, you don't need to have M flash to get to N flash.

Perhaps you car is still in the "break in" so mileage is kinda crappy. I too am at the 14-15MPG stage but I still have very little mileage compared to the other guys.

Perhaps a way to improve the mileage to make sure your husband doesn't secretly go zooming with your car at night.

Thank you! I have 1200 miles on her, how long is the break in period? I don't drive her hard.....but...... I can't help it once in while.... you just have to use those available rpm's.... I usually change gears around the recommended 3 rpms, but still get lousy MPGs. You are so right about my husband, who can blame him, it is so fun to drive!

Ha ha .. now you have an excuse to have your husband pay for gas (since he uses it too!).

Ehh ... there are a bunch of different break in procedures. Mazda says there isn't a specific on ... just don't drive at the same RPM too long or something. But here are a couple of suggestions:

RACING BEAT procedure
- For the first 1000 miles (1609km) do not accelerate under full throttle.
- During the first 1000 miles (1609km) do not exceed 4000 RPM.
- For miles 1000-2000 (3218km), expand the RPM upwards - but do not accelerate at full throttle.
- Over 2000 miles (3218km), full throttle and high RPM is acceptable.

Japanese Rotary Mechanic Procedure
0-600 (965.4km) Follow the Manual, but keep it under 4000
600-800 (1287.2km)Open it up a bit, vary accelerations and speed RPM < 5000
800-1000 Drive the car, enjoy it but still keep RPM's < 6000
1000-1250 (2011km) Drive it as it's powercurve intended it to be
RPM's < 7000
1250-1500 (2413.5km) Test the car frequently from RPM's 6000-9000 in
every gear
> 1500 Drive it anyway you want, U DA MAN NOW!!!!!!

I'm doing the Japanese Mechanic Procedure right now. Almost done! Have fun!

Thank you for the response.... I will follow the recommendation... I can't wait till U DA MAN now stage. I am glad I have been careful with it, an haven't really gone over the rpms. Luckily, I have been the main driver and not my husband!

When does the MPG get better and will the m or n flash make a difference?

!
sabennett procedure
0-100 km Keep it under 8000 rpm
100 km + Don't be a baby put your foot into it, that's why you have a warrantee. Besides in a few years you gonna get another one right?
Remember this is a car not a marriage if you break or it doesn't satisfy anymore get rid of it! :D
However if you would like to be a responsible owner Blue has some good advice. He knows his stuff <good luck with the fog light rewire >

Too funny!!! You are certainly quite the character. You got to make sure you come out to one of our RX-8 meets. You're in the Toronto area, aren't you?

Actually and I know I'm going to regret saying this..... I live in Orangeville, if you don't know it's about 40 minutes up Hwy 10 from Brampton in a normal car or about 20 in the 8.

I came to the Nflash forum because my check engine light came on (only 1000km) and when I took it into the dealer here he said that there was an upgrade for the software however they didn't have the upgrade yet. So I'm assuming this is the same stuff you guys are talking about here (I hope).
Anyways they reset the computer and said drive on dude. Since then I've only had the engine light come 2 times, both times the light was flashing (which is bad) it then stopped after about 30 seconds. Each instance occurred while I was going down the Hockley Road (very twisty) at about 140 km/h. I'm almost guessing it may have been a fuel issue. I'm just trying to cover all the bases. But I digress....
The short and sweet of it is I think I'm going to head down to Brampton to get it done.
I'll let you know when I go and we can meet at the S&S for a PINT
:D

I'm sure none of this has anything to do with the way I broke it in.. nudge nudge wink wink .. say no more say no more

engine light is constantly comming on? That doesn't sound right at all. The only time I ever had the light come on (and it was blinking to!) was when I came back from a 2 week vacation in South America, and as a test of the rotary I started the car on a -35c day :/ It hesitated then the rpm shot up to 4k, then dropped and started making a weird noise.. but it's all good now

Brampton Mazda is an ok dealership, they don't know to much about the 8's though because they don't frequent this forum But they are pretty good about rentals I got a '05 Mazda 3 for the day last saturday, only had 1000km on it.. damn i hate tiptronic

MrJynx ...
I had just fueled up before this occurred. Both incidences occured within a short period of time. I quickly returned to the dealer (because I wasn't far away) he gave a bottle of Gas Conditioner and I haven't had a problem since. This is why I suspected the fuel, however, the light came on both times while I was at the apex of a sharp curve under full throttle.

I appologize for not giving you all the facts.

My break in period was something between what BlueFrenzy and what Sabennett stated. They gave you fuel condition ... hmmm... I use that in one of my old trucks at work, because there would always be air in the fuel, and would freeze. And you stated that it happened just shortly after you filled up; you should check, and make sure when put your gas cap back on, that you twist it and hear a few clicks, because that engine light also comes on if the fuel cap isn't properly sealed/closed.

Someone mentioned that the SSP #61 is basically an "N flash" I think, or has it in the flash, if that's so, then I had it done 2 months ago. I had the same problem when it was cold, and I started it, then the engine raced to 4000 RPM and then just stuttered none stop around 3000 RPM. The cold caused my gas pedal assembly/computer to screw up, and couldn't use the gas pedal. They ordered a new one, and did the SSP #61 on my car. Only thing I noticed was, that my car never did that stuttering during warming up, warmed up faster in the mornings and at an RPM of around 2000 instead of 3000 like before, and my my gas mileage dropped a little. As for power, no clue, didn't notice anything really, cause the only time I actually have the ability to do it was on the weekends, and rest was to and from driving in traffic, so couldn't notice. I also had a new Mazda 3, from friday until monday, I wanted to cry, felt like I was cheating on my 8. I asked for something else with more power, service manager said, others don't even get a car usually, and atleast your mileage will double with this car.
