need for a dash cam
So after reading this article in the star today:
http://www.wheels.ca/columns/article/802748
I think there's a sudden need to get one of these things.
I recall Druggist mentioning he had one?
care to share where to get one?

I am The One!
Those GoPro's are selling like hotcakes.
I can't believe what this world is coming too... sad state of affairs. Everyone is going to be running with cameras on their dashes now... just sad.

With running cameras, there's also the downside.... THEFT OF SUCH cameras.
You have this thing mounted on a suction cup mount, so not only do you have to remove camera and hide in glove box when you park, but you can't just leave the suction cup on because thieves will see that and assume you have something i.e. a GPS, a camera, worth stealing. So they'll now break into your car and go searching for that device.
So now you have to remove the camera and the mount at the same time EVERYTIME you park your car. Those suction cups are not meant to be taken on and off everyday 365 days a year...
I'm currently looking at the Panavise 809 suction mount. I thought about GO PRO, but I also came up with a really good idea as an alternative.
I have a 24mm wide-angle digital camera with a 16 GB card and 720p recording. I can probably just use that and save some cash from buying a gopro. It won't have the 170 deg viewing angle, but a 24mm wide lense is sufficient for recording what goes on in front of me.
Some food for thought.

Yeah I run my GoPro on 720p setting as a dash cam full time now after I saw that video last week lol. Footman has a point about theft so I do have it mounted with the suction cup and always bring it with me when I leave car. The suction cup does seem pretty sturdy and after googling Panavise 809 they look very similar - the gopro assembly is built to handle being placed on the outside of race cars so I'm sure if you're gentle with taking it off is not too bad.
They do cost a pretty penny but they are sweet cameras - definitely serves to make fun videos when you're at the track or catch anything unusual out on the roads !
Of course if you have an old camera already im sure buying a suction cup mount would be much cheaper than buying a gopro kit (if you guys do a group buy Id consider upgrading mine to the GoPro HD 2 :P)
edit: oh when I got mine it wasn't in Canada so I got it shipped from the states. It currently goes for $299.99 at nextmod for a GoPro Motorsports HD 2 kit - which is the upgraded version of my camera - that kit comes with the suction cup and various 3M mounts you can attach to various surfaces. Comes with a waterproof case and a non-waterproof case. I think Best Buy/Futureshop sell just the camera without the suction cup for $270 something.
edit #2: Ohhh just checked out NextMod owner's fb page... they are currently testing out a more affordable dash cam alternative to the GoPro... he says it should roll out in 1-2 weeks and cost around $70-$120 range. The photo posted seems like its okay for night shooting (The GoPro can shoot at night and it'll catch what you need but its nothing close to the quality as its day time footage)

Yeah, if you don't have a wide angle camera (>28mm), it becomes increasingly less effective, so consider that too before you decide to cheap out like me. If your digicam is standard 35mm, it won't be wide enough to use. You'll see literally edge to edge just the front hood of your car.
But everybody's needs are different, so the best thing to do is to take your digicam and place it behind your windshield to simulate what it will see, and judge for yourself whether it's sufficient or not.

I use the GoPro, works for me. It is mounted using one of the adhesive mounts to the top of the window beside the mount for the rear-view mirror. Not noticeable, very small. Most importantly, it doesn't obstruct my view of the road as it is completely hidden behind the mirror from my viewing angle. If someone were to steal anything they'd take the recaros anyways.
I get in the car, snap in the camera and have it configured to start recording with one touch of a button. When I'm done, I can detach it with zero effort and put it in my pocket. I've recorded 2 days worth of video so far (four 50 minute videos) and I'm still at half battery and half a memory card free.
One thing to add: If you're planning on using the goPro it is mediocre at night. I hear the HD Hero 2 fixes that issue

Voids warranties
I dont remember the details, but I remember hearing about somebody getting in big trouble a while back for having a cam mounted on his motorcycle helmet. As the story goes he got pulled over by a cop for riding crazy and the cop pulled out his gun on the biker. He was filming the whole thing. The cop got in trouble. But they also arrested the guy for "Illegal wire tap" -Filming the scene- It was on the news and everything.
Apparently its illegal to film people without their knowledge and may even be deemed in admissible as evidence.
Edit: Here is the link to the story.

Other than the Go Pro, there are tons of alternative cameras too. I knew HKS had one released few months ago, and got several award winning in Japan. Its called HKS DMR (Direct Multi Recorder)

In case you want something other than Go Pro, maybe HKS DMR is a good choice.

iPhone4 or 4s with Harry's laptimer will give you position, speed, g-force, etc info. It can also hook into OBDII info from a compatible adapter. Can record and play back with data overlay. If you already have the phone all you need is a ~$12 app and a dash/window mount. If you really feel like you need to constantly record. Not sure if there's a similar app for android.

well i do know everything so i can't say i am surprised... lol
Trackmaster is sweet, I am just waiting for autox to start so i can actually put it to good use. Anyway, your purchase also allows you to sync the data to their website so you can examine and share all of your runs.

The judge dismissed all charges against Graber except for the traffic violations. In her finding she noted specifically that the wiretapping laws were not applicable in public areas where no reasonable expectation of privacy exists, that public officials have no right to have their actions, while on duty, shielded in any way from the public, and that filming in public is a first amendment right.

I was under the impression that photography while in a public place was completely legal which is why the police can't stop you from recording a protest, arrest, walk in the park, drive on the highway, etc.
