Need an engine
My 2006 needs an engine. Compression is 5.9 average in rotor 1 and 6.8 in rotor 2. Starts and runs, but... since I know what is wrong. How much is this likely to cost and where can I get it done? I'm in Kingston On.

Consider getting a used Engine if possible. You can usually get the salvage yard, online dealer or wherever you can source one to give you compression numbers (since they know this is important information when selling complete engines). If not, stay away. But I got a fantastic used motor for $1200 Cdn... Otherwise, at least double that figure for a rebuild plus labour costs.

We all think and do things differently.. I would also be starting to look for another used engine, but with the intention of rebuilding it myself, as a learning experience and to hopefully ensure that it went back together 100% as new or better.
Then if I decided to sell the car it goes with the other spare motor, or if I continue with the swap it could be completed in a weekend and I would still have the original engine to sell as is or to also rebuild and then sell...
What made you have the compression tested? My 2010 only has 54k, so hopefully it is still good, but I have starting adding some 2 stroke oil with the gas to help those seals..
Good luck

Quick back story. My car is a 2006 with a replaced engine of unknown origin. I didn't do a compression check as that engine had less than 40,000 k. Has been a reluctant starter for a while. I started it in -30 degree Celsius weather and it wouldn't stay running, it also flooded (my fault). After the procedure to clear the flooded engine it was very hard to start, so I had the compression test. It runs well and has power, but the engine needs to crank to build compression. I will replace the engine at some point. I have now replaced coils and plugs and run a light premix of synthetic 2 stroke oil. Starting is much better. I still will replace the engine at some point.

I am new here after buying an 8 in Dec with my eyes somewhat open; hard starting, apart from catastrophic seal failure, and poor idle seem to determine the need for a rebuild.
One of the changes with the S2, 2009 on models, was the faster cranking starter motor, this should/could reduce your cranking time..
There are some good batteries available now as well, the AGM that I put on the old Suzuki 1150 is fantastic and holds its charge for months..
I do not know how a typical 8 fires up, would describe mine as "soft", does not burst in to life like a high performance 4 stroke, but goes from cranking to running quite smoothly. Makes me a bit nervous of releasing the "key" too soon and then have it not start again / flooded... but gaining confidence, with limited winter use..
Not usually an advocate of oil additives, but somewhere I read of improved starting with "restore"? added to the sump, but I would certainly try before rebuilding..
Just some thoughts

I actually have a pretty fresh rebuilt motor it's Street Ported. It was done by MAzdees in Oshawa and Dave himself did it.
Everything was replaced pretty much, motor was ported and tuned the total bill was around 5-6K
I'd be willing to part ways with this motor in the favor of going REW Twin Turbo Swap in my Rx8. WIth all the mods to my Rx8, she really deserves some boos now.
Rebuilt has about 8k kms on it and yes, I have always used Mobil 10W30 Full Syntheic in winters and 0W40 in summers.
Let me know if you are interested :-)

Unless of course it's a labour of love and you want a large expensive project to keep yourself busy.

[QUOTE=wcs;4749858]You'd be better off just getting an RX7.
Rx7 is one hell of a machine but I am sorry never really liked them in stock form lol I find Rx8 alot more appealing as is and on top I need the rear seats for one of those sunny days to take kids out you know..
My bad, yes that's what I gathered so far. Fitting in twins would be too much of a work and would require far more fabrications.
Single Turbo REW would still run close to $13.5K with current exchange rate. Not sure if tuning and all is included at this point.
Not sure what I'd do at this point. If I can figure out a more cost effective and reliable way to boost the renny then I'd go that route.

I doubt that 50ccs of synthetic two stroke oil in 40 litres of fuel will do much of anything. I was hoping to relube the side seals a bit after flooding. I have done this before with other rotaries by adding oil directly to the combustion chamber. The engine starts and runs well and doesn't feel down on power. I just know that if the weather is somewhat marginal ie. lower than -15 starting is tricky. This remains one of best handling and enjoyable cars I have owned and I will eventually rebuild or replace the engine.
