Unhappy New Engine :(

So it has finally happened, last week had my car in for some starting issues, and a CEL at North Hill Mazda. They replaced the battery, starter and plugs but the car still ran really rough. Went back in for a check-up and they did a compression test....so a new engine has been ordered.

They said everything is under warranty, so I guess in a sense that is ok, however is there anything that I should be on the look-out for, or questions that I need to ask???

Your experience and wisdom would be appreciated...

BTW I have decided that once the new engine is in, I am going to trade her in or sell privately...she was a blast to drive and I will miss her, but a tiny addition to my family calls for a bigger vehicle...

Thanks in advance.

Sorry to hear that. Some people freak out when they see "new engine" - so your resale may be crap too.

The 8 could handle a "new addition" - I only had sportscars and had to buy larger POS once I had kids - then the 8 came out and I've been happy ever since.

Speaking as another with a brand new engine, replaced under warranty, because of compression loss and plug failure, I can tell you that my experience was relatively pain free. Dropped it off before we went on a holiday, came back and it ran beautifully. Power, smoother shifting and idle, and surprisingly better heater performance and fuel economy - go figure.

I think that most people would see "new engine" and "Renesis" and would pay MORE for a used 8 with a new motor, no?

The new addition and the 8 will get along just fine. The 8 is big enough and spacious enough to keep you going until you want to add another... and besides, you're going to get killed on the resale value.

Well, spoke again to the dealer and I think there was some confusion between what 'new' engine meant...I interpreted it as Mazda replacing my engine with a new one, whereas they thought it would be a refurbished engine, however they did admit that this was the first replacement they had done for an rx8...so just to clarify: does new mean 'new' or refurbished??

Thanks.

no offense or anything. but what does it matter if its new or remaned?

firstly, its not like you have a choice in the matter.

secondly, if it were a remaned engine its not like they take it apart, spit shine it and put it back together. anything that is out of spec would get chucked in place of new parts, all new seals would be used. new gaskets etc.

that being said, last i heard the reman program is on hold or something and for the time being they are supplying new engines for warrantly claims. thats just what i've heard and i can't promise if thats true or not. the dealer you are dealing with should be able to find out for you though.

Dude dont do it!
update the wifes car, throw a kiddy seat in the back of the 8 and it a win win for everyone. wife gets a bigger car and you get to keep the 8 (with new motor). thats what i did and my boy loves going for a spin in daddys car so its a win win win and everybody is happy.

theres no shame in putting a baby seat in the back of an 8.

The last time I asked, they were replacing engine cores under warranty with NEW engine cores.

I had my engine replaced in July. I was told they were out of remans so had to wait over a month to get an engine from Japan. Bright side, it definitely has more power!!

Did you guys have to provide a record of every oil change ever done? I have a few on hand, and my dealership in Edmonton will be able to provide some...but how many would I need? On the occasions that I did the oilchange myself...then what???

it is based on how many km's are on your car...I got my engine replaced a few weeks ago, it had 94k on it and the service department guy told me I needed at least 8-10 records

I didn't have to produce a lot of receipts or anything like that, but the car had been in for fuel pump problems a couple of times. The work order wording was 'lack of power' or something like that, establishing a history of similar performance loss.

Stay away from the dealership, just let 'em do their thing and phone you when it's done. The more they see of you, the more chances they get to ask you how fast you drive? What kind of gas you use? etc, and try to blame it on stuff you did.

My dealer left a couple of things unhooked and lost some more grommets, but generally 'met my expectations' (sad isn't it?) Oh, and from the look of the rear bumper, I'd guess that the truck they used to push it into the shop was WHITE.

My warranty is now truly over, so time to equip the new one with my shiny BNR turbonizer!

Well, my experience with the service manager at North Hill has been excellent. He has been open and honest, so I think we'll be ok. I also have the option of going with my extended warranty company, but they would like the dealership to teardown the engine to verify the blown apex seal....and then do a reconditioned engine from an autowrecker...which the cost of that engine is about $3500, Mazda could provide one for $2500 according to my dealership...???

I have a renny engine from a wrecked 04 RX-8 I'd sell for $1000. It ran great when I took it out of the car.

Hey Drizz, depending on your budget, I would opt for buying an additional (cheaper) car instead of selling the 8. The resale will hit you hard and although its true that it is inconvenient for a rear-faced car seat, once they turn one and you can turn that seat around it's very easily accessible and useable.
