New Years Gifts

I just returned safely from a trip to Ottawa to visit family. It was a lot of highway driving through various amounts of snow, ice, rain, and dry roads. My first long-distance winter "trial by fire". While there were a few hairy moments, the car performed great under all the conditions.

Anyhow, I just ordered my first mods for 2008.

Red mazdaspeed oil filler cap from Corksport ($73).

Blue interior LED's from RX-8 Strakes.

I was thinking about this chrome rear bumper insert from RX8 Strakes ($29), but not sure. What do you think of this on a BB with stock bumper? I was thinking it might match the Racing Beat screens in the front.

HAPPY NEW MODS!

qtwre: yeah, $73 does seem a little harsh.

TurboEight: Thanks man for your honesty. I'd like to hear from anybody else who has an opinion on these. There's a slight chance I might go ahead and get them since they're pretty cheap and post some pics ... but i think you're right and I'll probably pass.

I'm glad you made it home safely!

I bought this oil cap a while back ($25 + $12)

My latest (after Xmas) purchase is

As for the rear accents... I'm undecided

DarkBrew,

Thanks man, it all started out with that CEL but everything went fine. I'm probably going to the dealer later this week just to have things checked out.

I like the oil cap.

Do you mind if I PM you sometime to talk about the D-specs? I am just learning about stuff like suspension so I don't really know the exact differences between coilovers, shocks, struts, etc. I have the eibachs with stock shocks right now. I had the same on my previous car (celica) and have never changed out more suspension parts. I was thinking about the RB sway bars/endlinks, though. Where are you having the springs/shocks and sway bars installed, if you don't mind my asking?

I'm having everything installed at RPM in the spring (pun). I don't think that you can go wrong with the RB swaybars and links. Your car is still new so your stock shocks will be good for a while. How much did the eibachs lower your car?

Edit: I looked it up
Front With 1.2" Drop, Rear With 0.8" Drop, Progressive Spring Design

Zerobio, do you plan to try some sort of motorsport? Autox, track? You should consider it to make use of your suspension if you're going to start working on it.

Hey I am definitely interested in going there when you do if I can make it. Try to remember to let me know okay?

I just emailed RPM asking if he can install the sway bars and I also asked a bit about what kind of stuff he's done for you so maybe I can follow in your foosteps a little, if you don't mind. Would you mind sending me a PM to tell me how much you got the RB swaybars for and would they work out fine with the eibachs, in your opinion.

I forget the exact drop from the eibachs, i know it was on here somewhere. Something like 1.2 inches?

Edit: Okay, got it. I initially didn't think it would be enough but it seems like it's settled more and I am quite happy with the drop and feel.

Well I would like to try in the summer. Never done anything like that but I think I have to at least once for the experience right?

Well I haven't installed mine yet so he might not know too much about it yet...
I bought the suspension kit from RB so it was discounted 10% I think but you can buy the bars and links directly from their site.
I was thinking about the RB bars with your progressive springs... Hmm. qtwre, do you want to comment on this? I think your car might feel under-damped in hard cornering... You might need some adjustable shocks.

I do not wish to comment. lol

I really have no idea how he drives so I can't comment on what I think is necessary. If you just drive around town why bother with sways at all? Is the car going to have the chance to feel under-damped in hard cornering (ie. will there be hard cornering)?

My vote is for shocks at least for the reason that you're going to wear out the stock shocks more quickly with a lowered car. If you ever want to go back to stock suspension blown stock shocks won't do you much good. The adjustability is also something to play with.

Even saying "I plan on maybe lapping my car" doesn't really warrant the purchase of this stuff yet since you may not really know how the car feels stock.

As you upgrade your suspension, you may increase the limit of grip in a corner but if you exceed it, it will bite you so much harder. Stock ftw.

Good points, qtwre.

My car definitely feels under damped in the rear. Hence the new shocks.
zerobio, you should get out at least once on stock equipment just to appreciate the difference.

DarkBrew and qtwre,

That helps. I don't really plan to do much in the way of racing, simply daily driving. So maybe the sways aren't my next mod. I agree about the shocks, I'll just go with what I have now (springs + stock shocks). As far as how I drive: not too hard, not too soft ... spirited driving, I guess.
