Question no custom brokerage fees for US products???

Today i talked to the security guy of my condo about the shipment i am waiting for. I told him i am waiting for a set of tires and rims; and tires were purchased from tirerack US and rims were purchased from 1010tires canada; i wanted him to keep my shipment if they arrived but i had been wondering what i can do for the custom brokerage fees that i have to pay for tires. However, he said if the tires are made in US like goodyear etc., then i dont have to pay for custom......Is that ture?

Hey.

He is Kind of right. Under NAFTA, U.S. made auto parts are duty free into Canada.

However..... Add in the GST, and add in whatever fee the shipper charges for doing the paperwork.

Call the delivery company, and they should be able to give you an amount over the phone. Then, just give them your credit card #, and they'll release the shipment on delivery to your Concierge (classy, n'est pas ).

You don't pay any duties/taxes/brokerage on tires from tirerack.com

its already calculated in the price when you checkout and enter your postal code.

waiting on a set of tires from them myself.

^ That is correct...tirerack.com has a deal with UPS, so they have a flat rate of $20 for Canadian orders.

For other items and places, it is dependent on the postal couriers, and/or how the place you purchased your items from declares your items (ie. fake a low value, declare as gift...).

Normally, the "other" websites don't fake a low value, as it doesn't concern them if you get taxed 100$ on a $200 item.

So whatever price you see at checkout is the TOTAL? No extra charges on delivery?

Also, is this true for rims at tirerack?

Thanks.

I got my $355 starter from the US with no customs/brokerage fees, not gst/pst, nada. I was a little shocked b/c my coils cost me an extra $50 in various fees.

No extra charge on rims either.

Duties/Taxes and Brokerage are all totalled during checkout and added along with shipping costs to the final price. So you dont have to be worried about any other charges at all.

They'll even mount and balance for free if you've purchase rims + tires.

Tirerack FTW!

EDIT:

By the way guys, check out the windshield wipers that they have on sale right now. They have Valeo's on sale by one get one free. I got three sets shipped to Calgary for each of our cars. They were 30 bucks for a pair shipped (final price). These are the best wipers I've ever used. In Canada they cost about 40-50 dollars a wiper! Get them while they're on sale, you wont be disappointed!

what we talked about above is true. i received my tires today, I didnt have to pay anything. Comparing to 1010tires.com, i at least saved 250 dollars for a set of tires. Dont know much about rims cuz i ordered them from 1010tires.com about 1 and half weeks ago and its on the way from vancouver to calgary now.
And the UPS driver was actually pretty kind, he phoned me when i wasnt at home and left phone at home. and this afternoon, i came back and saw 2 missed calls from the same number; i called him back and he said he was gonna come back in 1 hour and half. finally, he was a bit earlier but at least he was back. i am pretty happy....

Duties and Taxes are not charged by where the item comes from. Rather it is charged by total cost of the item. So if you get rims from Japan and the shipper puts the value at $100 you most likely will not pay any taxes or duties. However, if customs decides to do a random check on your item and opens the packaging and they find rims, but the value states $100, they will "estimate" a value for the item based on market value and charge you duties and taxes on that value.

UPS and Fedex are THE WORST when it comes to taxes and duties. They also do a "special" fee called Brokerage which could end up being up to 60% of the value of the item. Some larger companies (like tirerack) have corporate brokerage accounts with UPS and Fedex and they charge you a small fee upfront in order to handle all other taxes and duties.

I'm a little skeptical about TireRack paying the tax....I think the extra is only the UPS crap.
I had a shipping quote to Canada, for a set of Hoosier A6's ($1000.00) that was only $100.00 more than shipping to the US side of the border....GST and PST would be more that that.

Incorrect.

With tirerack you GET your tires/rims, then UPS mails you out an invoice for brokerage/taxes AFTER.

I know because I've purchased from tirerack before.

When you checkout it says YOU agree to pay any extra taxes/duty/brokerages that may incur because of your shipping.

Sorry buddy but you are COMPLETELY wrong.

I've ordered 8 sets of tires this year from tire rack and have never been charged additional fees. Here is a quote from their site:

* The sales taxes and duties included in this order are collected on behalf of the applicable Canadian government agencies. No additional taxes, duties, or fees will be collected by UPS Canada upon delivery of this order.
* Delivery may be delayed by customs procedures.

Go to checkout and they tell you the charges upfront:

Additional Fees and Taxes
Excise Tax: $0.00
GST: $58.57
PST: $0.00
Duty: $69.32
Provincial Tire Fee: $16.00
Brokerage Fee: $30.00
Grand Total:

$1,457.85

Notice the Duty/Brokerage Fees?

You are correct that usually UPS is a huge ripoff, but only when the American Retailer does not have a agreement with them.

You are wrong, It says it clearly in the tireracks's FAQ shipping as well only $20 will be charged.

I'll try to dig it up for you.

I think Daemos may have purchased from tirerack before they introduced the new Canadian shipping policy. Since they get a lot of sales from us Canadians and a lot of us complained about the taxes and duties they now pay for all extra fees up front. You pay a bit extra but they handle everything so you only get the shipment and NO OTHER FEES.

I've ordered from tirerack before they introduced this as well as after. Before it was a kick in the nuts when UPS mailed you the invoice. But now you don't have to worry about it.

I'm not responding to fees relating to any particular store or tires, etc, but my experience in importing stuff from the US (eBay purchases, etc) is that the courier companies charge brokerage fees, whereas US parcel post does not. I think if you Google you will find some info on this. I always ask sellers if they can use US parcel post as opposed to FedEX or UPS, or I look for their method of shipping before deciding to buy from them.

Yea last time I ordered from tire rack was a LONG time ago, this was before they had this new Canadian Shipping Policy...would of saved me lots of money

I have the invoice from UPS if you'd like me to scan it in :p I was charged ~$200 for brokerage/duty/taxes for 4 rims and tires...not bad IMO.

Pwe

The PWE (pass without entry) is $200. Anything under $200 you don't have to declare. Over $200 you need a customs broker to bring something into the US. DHL builds into their freight fee the customs broker charge. UPS & Fed Ex is an extra fee. This is how it normally works... There may indeed be special vendor agreements with their freight forwarders. Also, a customers broker typically needs to have a POA or power of attorney signed and in their possession to clear an item from customs (over $200). Then there is the single entry bond fee. You have to be bonded so the US government is ensured it will get it's duty subject to liquidation. The question on whether something is dutiable or not is yet another question based on the HS code or harmonized tarrif agreement. Under NAFTA, most things are duty free entering the US with an appropriate country of origin stamp.

This is how it all generally works.

Thats true, I bought 4 rims and 2 GSD3 good year tires cost $1913 USD, guess how much UPS charged me?

Freaking 500 on top, I called UPS they explained all the calculation and couple line of items they refer me to call the custom duty....Thats around 25% extra.

But the cheapest GSD3 in here cost me 720, everywhere sells around 950 or more.

I still saved a couple hundred at the end.
