In my opinion the Rx-3 was the best of the pre 7 Rx's. The Rx-2 was lighter, but had less power and a little more blocky look, the 4's and 5's became Americanized as stated in an earlier reply in this thread.
The 3's had the old rotary guard round tail light cluster, fantastic overall proportions, and basically embodied the Rx spirit very well. Even the Rx-3 wagon was a pretty neat piece of kit.
You can still catch Rx-3's in action during the Speedvision broadcasting of the SCCA runoffs every fall. They're in the GT-3 class (along with a gagle of Rx-7's). A few years back a pretty accomplished driver almost won the event in a red Rx-3. The fully Toyota backed Celica came from the back of the pack to win eventually. Which in amateur racing is bullshit if you ask me... why is there factory support of that nature. Anyway, I digress.
I've attached a pic of a nice race prepped Rx-3.
Personally, I think there's a great opportunity for Mazda to bring the rotary to the Mazda3 platform, create a two door body, rear wheel drive and bring the Rx-3 back. Some oversized fender flares a rotary and meaty tires would bring even larger swarms to that car.
