Overcharging at Dealer
Hi everyone, i'm new to the forums, I really just lurk, but I signed up a while ago and figured I should start participating.
I've been shopping around, I'll be picking up an 8 in about a month or so, I've just been getting prices and taking test drives to see how I like the car.
Today I went to Ontario Mazda, at the 401 Dixie Auto Mall in Mississauga to see what they had in stock and check pricing.
They had a Demo Sunlight Silver GT with every option I think you can get minus the Moonroof wind deflector, Mudguards, Navigation and I think those Valve stem caps. I took a good look at the car and it has brake dust piled up like you wouldn't believe on all 4 wheels, I don't think the car has been washed yet in it's life.
Inside it was quite dirty, missing fuse panel cover on the drivers kick panel. The salesman said that it is driven by the Sales Manager who has put 15k on the car and takes great care of it, sure he does.
I then asked if I could take it for a test drive to check it out and see how it's driving and he said he needed to ask first because you need an appointment for a test drive. Came back 5 min later to tell me that his manager said there is something wrong with the car and I would not be able to drive it.
I then asked the price and he told me 43k plus taxes and whatnot. My dad said we'll think about it and we left.
Is this a common thing, because I have been to a couple and they were quite friendly and curteous and were giving me offers of less than MSRP for a nice new GT still in the wrap? I think i'll be steering clear of Ontario Mazda for now on, off to Ajax Mazda and Davewood Mazda this weekend.

The best advice I can give you is to play hardball. 43K for a USED rx8?? You gotta be kidding.
Search our Canada forum for prices that other member have gotten. I even posted up my invoice for new 2004 GT --> that I got for 40.5 K including taxes. I'm too lazy to find the link so do a quick search.
Many members have gotten prices around this range (and lower!). Ask CowTownWoody ... he just got his new 05 for 42K including taxes.
If the dealership has '04s available in stock still, they should be going for mid to high 30s.
Good luck

BlueFrenzy and I posted a few threads a while back detailing what we paid for our cars and how we went about getting the deals that we did. (tactics) They applied to the 04 cars but would still be relevant.

I was a new car salesman once upon a time. I noticed that some dealers had different policies about a price to 'walk' a customer with. Some would give you a price that is lower than anyone would sell for so that you would eventually get frustrated with all the other dealers and come back. (they would then disappoint you too)
Others would stick with MSRP or special promotional pricing until you were ready to make a deal.
I found that the best deals gotten out of the dealer I worked for were when closing time was approaching and a car had not been sold that day. The sales manager would often cave to the pressure of being able to inform the dealer prinicipal that they sold at least one car that day. So how do you know when they haven't sold a car? - Try making a deal on a bad weather day.
Also when you do make your deal, don't shop the price after the fact. It is only going to lead to frustration when you find out you could have gotten it cheaper. If you are happy when you sign on the dotted line then try to maintain that and start enjoying ownership.
Good luck on your quest.

When I was ready to buy my 8 I first went to Avante and they offered $2000 off MSRP right away. Then some Mazda dealer in Orangeville made an offer by email to me for $2250 off MSRP. I then went to Markham Mazda saw the car I wanted on the lot, went in and put in an offer of $3000 off MSRP and they took my credit card deposit all within about 10 min. I would reccommend Markham Mazda for getting a good price, they seem to have less overhead; although I have heard several nightmare stories about their service dept.
BTW I have an 05 GT with Moonroof, just picked it up 2 weeks ago tomorrow! :D

Pm'd ya back Pete and R-J
Yeah, I went by Markham Mazda, spoke with Raymond, really nice guy, he offered 3k off on a new 05 instock, I was trying to trade in my dad's Saab 95, but my dad didn't seem to keen on the idea I haven't heard anything about the service department, but I would probably take my car regardless of where I got it to Dave Wood Mazda, just because it's so close to my house, less fuss.
I have been to Avante aswell, they quoted me some different costs for a GS, but with all the new cars coming out, seems to be cheaper to get an instock GT with a bit of haggling. I was going to get a GS for the less weight and stuff I didn't need or want, but after thinking about it, it's a daily car and I wouldn't mind leather and a moonroof and xenon headlights and nice stuff like that. Even though I detest traction control and stability control, although I hear you can turn it off :D

I stopped in at Prima Mazda today and spoke with a salesman and he tossed out some pretty good prices, i'm going back on monday to hear all the numbers and see exactly what i'm getting myself into.
I'll let everyone know what happens and hope to be an owner soon enough.
