Potential large performance improvement
They say that one of the best ways to improve performance is to reduce weight... well my wallet's significantly lighter than it was this morning, so I should be much faster now :p
Ran over a nail somewhere (new development, tons of debris and mud everywhere) this morning, so I slurm the tire to get mobile again.
Take it into the dealer, new Potenza was almost $600 installed ::heartattack:: Oh, and no road hazzard on the Bridgestones (I was all happy reading the tire insert in the manual, until I realized it was for the Dunlops, which do have a road hazzard warranty).
Yeeesh. I'm now looking at the spare tire kit, apparently it's $595. In this case it wouldn't have helped as the nail was very close to the sidewall (have to replace), but it might let me get away with a patch in the future.
Does anyone know if the (canadian) spare tire kit has everything needed (mounts, wheel, tire)?
On the plus side they did the floormat hook install and airbag recall while it was there (which the selling dealer didn't do - grrrr).

How would the spare tire kit help? It is a temporary tire. You still have to replace the tire if it is bad enough. The spare tire kit just gives you the option of putting on a "mickey mouse" spare to get you rolling again as an alternative to relying on the fancy fix-a-flat goo or waiting for the tow truck. But replacement tires are expensive. Now, the $600 for the Potenza from your dealer sounds high, but I haven't actually priced them. My .02

My dealer offers the "Tires for life" program.
Just as long as you do all your oil changes at the dealer ( which comes out to about 300 in a year) they will replace your tires FREE whenever they are in the 20% almost need new tires stage!

Also, some punctures (sidewall, big holes) can't be slurmed, so you'd be SOL without a spare.

Well I think I have put on a spare once in the past 20 years. I have had several punctures that amounted to slow leaks, so I just pumped them up and drove to a tire shop to have them patched. I would pay for a $60 tow and a $25 patch long before I would use that fix a flat goop and destroy a potentially repairable tire. I would reserve the goop for an absolute emergency. If you toast a tire that has had any significant wear you are probably looking at replacing a minimum of a pair of tires on the same axle. We are in no worse shape than probably 50% of the population that likely don't have a full 60 PSI in their mini spares and have never checked the pressure in them. It's a numbers game and most people will win so I wouldn't get overly paranoid . . .
