Calling all fellow Canadian RX-8 owners! Yesterday marked the 13th year I have taken my Rex out of winter storage. Getting it ready this week for another driving season.
Having said that, it looks like all of us here are going to take it up the you know where without lube thanks to carbon tax/price increase. Today, local prices hit $1.33 per litre. This is March 9. Last year, filling up from 1/4 tank, I was spending $50-$55 per fillup (avg. premium price was $1.45 or so).
What does everyone think gas prices this year will be? Considering its more or less my summer daily driver, I am worried this is going to be a very expensive year to run this car.
We have many different fuel suppliers who swear on their children’s heads that there’s no price fixing. Funny how they’re all within a tenth of each other. Also funny how some mysterious occurrence or far away shortage jumps prices by $0.20 per litre overnight. Even more funny how this takes place prior to a long weekend.
You're lucky you got to put away your ride for the winter. I daily drive my 8. Even then, I only spend $40 a week for fuel. Usually gives me about a week and a bit before having to put more fuel into the tank. Granted, this is with us locked up. Now that driving season is soon approaching, I know for sure it'll be $80-140 some weeks... c'est la vie... at least we're not paying the price they pay over in Europe.. ouch!

I need to replace coils. Then compression test 😱 to see how 1 year has changed things.
I can see why you would need to replace the coils. Especially if you start to notice a misfire. Why would you want to do a compression after only 1 yr??
I've picked up my 8 almost 3yrs ago now. Daily driven. Has about 88k on the clock. Stronger than ever really. As long as you let the engine breath and exhale properly, I don't see why you would need to constantly do a compression test... Just a form of torture you prefer?? lol

After refreshing the coils and replacing the mid pipe I’ll have a more comfortable base to monitor how things are. I’m still new to this engine and how it exhibits problems. Car performs well based on my sample of one.

first order of business is getting rid of anything restricting exhaust flow. Definitely getting your coils swapped out if you're already feeling a misfire happen. Installing the BHR midpipe was a God sent. Car is alot livelier now that its able to exhale properly. I was grateful the previous owner already installed a Racing Beat Exhaust on my R3. BHR lined up beautifully.

Yep, city fuel economy is gonna be pretty bad for a heavy car like mine and my foot can still be a bit heavy(not as heavy as when I owned the 8, though). As for highway, those small blocks can actually do better than rotary, but I don't drive that much highway anymore.
The best highway tank I had on my 8 was 20 MPG. 17 sounds a little low but if you are driving fast then it isn't too unreasonable.
If you haven't done the coils and don't know their history, I would definitely swap them out.
More whining - $1.76 today for premium. Looking for $1.98 by summer.
Granted I live in the heart of fuel protest land so there’s probably an obnoxious tax imposed for the area.
I recall the Vancouver fuel price having a scandal, though. When it was like $1.60 plus for regular, people put together all the taxes and whatnot and there was a 15~20¢ gap still which didn't make any sense.
So it's not just carbon tax, something else is going on.
Just filled er up today for the first time this year from a tad over half a tank after getting my spring oil change/maintenance done. Premium here was 1.58. $33 bucks for a fill.
Yup - the land of the protester. Suburbs of Vancouver. Go a few hundred km from here and it gets much cheaper. And like Jinx stated, the extra costs don’t reconcile with the local taxes. There’s a little something extra for the inconvenience at the pipeline termination in Burnaby. Lots of very polarized people here.

There are many reasons for the current crisis, with many people just believing and parroting whatever source of news (or FAKE NEWS as many say) they consume and are unwilling to look deeper into the issue.
The Russia invasion of Ukraine and subsequent embargoes are a major factor that was not a factor last year.
Another is the apparently forgotten deal OPEC and other oil producers agreed to in 2020 to cut production by 23% starting in 2021 which has worked according to plan.
Oil is now $120 USD a barrel and predicted to hit $140 soon.
Insufficient gas refinery capacity is another reason for the increase, with demand outpacing production.
Interestingly, several US refineries ceased production, also in 2020.
Quite a coincidence, no?
Refining capacity in the U.S. is currently the lowest it's been since 2015.
This is not unforeseen, it's been a bottleneck point of production for many years, but major oil companies currently are not reinvesting huge profits into refining and exploration but have been focused on financial strategies keeping prices high to benefit their bottom line and shareholders portfolios.
There are lots of stories about these financial strategies, one just has to look for them.
Exxon Mobil's profits doubled since the same point last year, Chevron's increased fourfold.

What you don’t want to talk about is that high demand and low supply is what sets the stage for massive profits. Those companies didn’t do it on their own. The corrupt overseers the citizens helped put into power created that for them.
Because they’re all in on it together with one hand in the others pocket and the other hand stabbing the very citizens who made it all possible in the back the same as the rest of us.
That’s what you don’t want to talk about. Hence the words of guile and intent of deception.

If my math is correct that's about $9.38 USD a gallon.
OUCH.
We're close to $5.00 here in hillbilly country, it's a lot more in some places.
I haven't heard anything about the U.S. strategic reserve being released as they have in the past which suggests to me supply is not an issue as much as the refinery problem.
That's also curious, because I haven't seen any stations actually run out of gasoline, so it seems it might be market speculation driving it atm.

Some people in SoCal are crossing into Mexico where State controlled Pemex is about $4.55 a gallon.
gas went up another 10c last night (this is an every morning sight for me) and regular at the "cheap" place is $5.20. dont give me that lie about putins price hike bull **** either cause the cost was about double before his "minor incursion" it was clearly stated what would happen before the most free and fair "election" happened and its been climbing daily since. but hey lets beg the saudis and murderous dictators in other flat broke 3rd world hell holes for oil thats not as clean as ours and cost more to transport to the states. thank god we we are easing sanctions on solar panels and nobodys feelz are hurt on ******* tho
