Angry RANT! (gas related)

LOL don't get your hopes up, it's not about our MPG! =p

It's about (#)@ Chevron and their "full service" stations.
I've never liked other ppl pumping my gas, and I especially hate it now.

So I was in Richmond tonight and my gas light came on so I pull into the station at No.2 Rd and Westminster. The price was 70.1 with furterh 3.5 cents discount so there was a line up.
When I got to second in line, I see the attendant YANKING out the hose and spraying gas all over the back of the car. He says nothing and let the guy drive off.
So as I'm pulling up, I'm thinking that BETTER have been an accident and not the way he pumps gas all day. I give him my credit card, he charges it etc. Then I'm looking in the rearview mirror and I finally see it click finish. The attendant walks up and gives it FIVE more clicks, and then YANKS it out AGAIN and sprays gas all over my car.
I get out of my car and told him "Would you mind being more careful and not spilling gas all over my car?" And I started to get a paper towel to wipe it.
His response was "WHAT??? WHAT??? WHERE???"
And my response was "THERE! You SEE THAT??? You SMELL IT???"
and then he muttered something (he has a really thick Chinese accent) and then I asked him for his name.
He then proceeded to dig around his jacket for his name tag and holds it out WITH HIS THUMB AND FINGER COVERING HALF HIS NAME.
Then I physically took his hand and removed his fingers so I can see his full name. I repeated it for him and thanked him and got into my car.
As my car was rolling away, he said through my windown "DO YOU WANT TO COPY IT DOWN??".
I was like that's it, this guy's just asking for something. So I parked and went back with some paper and said YES, as a matter of fact, I DO want to copy it down. You got a pen?
Now, I KNOW he has a pen cause I just signed my visa with one he gave me. But he says "NO, GO INSIDE FOR PEN".
So I went inside and asked for a pen and explained to the guy inside what happened as well. He seemed more concerned and gave a bit more courtesy and I just took his name down as well and left.
Now I'm begining to write a letter to the manager of that station or Chevron Canada. One muttered sorry or ops or a smile was all it took. But this guy chose to be the tough guy and wanted to challenge me back with daring me to copy his name down.
And I mean, it's not just the guy's attitude that was bad towards me, but he was totally cavalier about how he spilled like 100mls of gas for every car (after filling up ten cars there'd be a litre of fuel on the ground) and that there was a line up for cheap gas and ppl were waiting in line with their engine on.
I wonder if Transport Canada would be interested in this as well....
If the guy was pissed off that he had to pump gas all day, he could quit and there are a lot of honest unemployed ppl who would jump at the chance to hold a job.

yea it was a PRC guy right?
I just finished writing up the letter, fired one copy off via email and dropping one off at their downtown office tm
I would have let it go if he didn't "big" me and asked me if I want to copy his name down so I don't forget.
Like what, he thinks I'm too illiterate to write up a letter? I specifically said in the letter I want to hear back via telephone what actions they are willing to take because me and my family and friends would never feel safe to go back to another Chevron if their employees continually dump fuel on the ground.

As much as I agree with you RT.. doubt much action will occur.

If the guy wasn't such a jackass to begin with, he wouldn't be stuck working as a gas station attendant.

So I guess it just reinforces the thought.. TRUST NO-ONE WITH YOUR CAR.. not even for gas LOL!

Rageboy, lol welcome to the board!
I hate mainlanders who do stuff as if there are no safety standards for anything and doesn't give a crap's *** as long as they don't take blame for it or blow up while they're there.
I'm the grey 8 at the slushseries =) Dan's in the faster black one :p
hmm.... lol quite a switch from a Mach1 to an 8! You might miss the tire burning torque :p
yea I think I've seen you before with the silver mini, with the konig wheels right?

but yea Enzolor, I agree with you but at least I want to know the guy knew I did SOMETHING cause he was challenging me and assumed I'm just gonna swallow it down

Update: So Ron the station manager called me this morning and expressed his apology for the guy's behavior. The manager told me a reprimand and some sort of safety refresher course is in order. He tells me Chevron Canada knows of my complaint, and so will Mr. Hong Rui, which settles my main issue of his daring me to do something. Hopefully he'll change his attitude and the way he handles flammable liquids.
Sometimes I think I wasted time doing things like this but then you know, I think it's people's duty to make a complaint known if they see something substandard. I mean, if we all shut up and swallow it, then we're pretty much PROMOTING a substandard service. Doing that in a free market is dangerous because sooner or later that means our services and product will continue to degrade until it's like we're living in some underdeveloped country where no one knows how to do their jobs properly anymore. And I'd rather die than to see Canada degraded to a country like that... but I think it already has.... I remember coming here 13 yrs ago, people were so courteous and the service so nice.

When I was younger (19-23, 1992-96), I worked at a couple of Chevron Stations, ending up as an assistant manager at one. This kind of crap would have got you fired by the Retailers running the stations I worked at.

The vast majority of Chevron stations are franchises. The person running them (the retailer) owns all the stock in the store, and is paid a small amount (270 or so per day for a split service full+self station back when I was working at one) for selling the gas. The Retailer pays for all the stock, and makes the bulk of any profit off of it. The Retailer is responsible for hiring and firing of staff at the location, and while Chevron can't hire or fire, they can certainly lean on the Retailer.

Chevron used to have a Mystery Shopper program which punished/rewarded excellent service. I do not know if that is currently still in operation. Full Service attendents were supposed to do the following back in the mid 90's. 1. Prompt for a fill with Supreme Plus 2. Fill the requested amount of gas 3. Wash windows unless told otherwise. 4. Ask to check oil 5. Ask to Check Tires (Visual Inspection regardless).

When washing windows (you do not ask if you can wash them, you simply do it, unless the car/window is obviously spotless, or the driver tells you not to) the mirrors, headlights, wiperblades and taillights were to be cleaned. Side windows would be washed if you had time. When checking oil, they're also supposed to visually check your fluid levels (brake, coolant, washer), and check auto transmission oil if there was a dipstick. It was also a good rule to watch for burnt out lights and report them. There was a short period of time in which we were also to ask if they'd like their ashtrays emptied, and/or floormats shaken.

Most of the customers I had I knew who wanted windows washed, and the amount of gas they'd be asking for. I remembered their fuel type, and their preferred method of payment. Every Christmas, I'd pull in around 100 bucks in tips. Average day, I'd get a couple of bucks, enough to buy snacks from the store.

Most Chevron gas jockeys (both full and self serve) used to attend a SuperHost program party sponsored by the BC Government, which usually clarifies customer service and why good customer service is so important. Sadly, a lot of Jockeys don't stick around long enough to take it or simply don't. That course has served me extremely well after leaving the petroleum transfer agent line of work :-)

All Chevron gas attendents are supposed to take a fuel safety course which teaches them the ins and outs of Fuel safety. Clearly that jockey hadn't taken it. I actually had a customer push me once when I was trying to get him to follow some fire safety rules.

You absolutely did the right thing to write in about this Titus, I've noticed a serious decline in pump jockey skills over the last few years. I only go so far as to tip the good ones (the ones that get your headlights, mirrors etc when washing windows). If you can't pump gas properly, what's the chance you're going to be able to perform higher quality work at your next, hopefully higher paying job?

You've restored my faith. I'm so used to seeing inaction, this is a MAJOR shock for me.

Uberjumper, yea I had a friend who took the superhost program too! she said it was interesting stuff they taught her. But yea I don't like going to full service cause I never know how much to tip LOL
Pete, no in the end I left it at that after the station manager called me. Apparently he's had problems with the same guy before, so long as they have a record now....
lol Enzolor, well sometimes you just gotta push until action happens, but I agree there's also a lot of inaction that discourages people from doing anything, but hey we live in a nice country and we shouldn't let it degrade like that.

petroleum transfer agent. LOL :D

Good for you to not put up with this. Too many people are so caught up with themselves and have such a disregard for others that they would rather screw everybody else to save themselves some time or energy. It's kind of like when some maroon decides to speed and cut people off on the highway because they are running late. Great idea Einstein - you may save 3 minutes on a 25 minute drive, but you also run a much higher risk of causing an accident (even if you vehicle is not involved) and making EVERYBODY later.

Sorry for barging into the Canada section and launching into a mini-rant, but I've noticed common courtesy go the way of the Dodo bird and it's saddening.

BTW, here in New Jersey, there are signs that state that it is unlawful to fill your own tank so your always at the mercy of the hose jockeys.
WTF is unlawful? Is it like illegal?
