RE050A at Tirerack
#5
Yeah, the RE050A Pole Postions are on sale right now... If I had a bit more cash I would definately pick a set up for my car... Around Sept the fronts were going for $160 and the rears were $170. Now the fronts are going for $165 and the rears are at $176.
Still a great deal! Much better than getting them here in T.O.
But alas, I'm broke...
I'm hoping they don't go up too much after winter... I have a feeling I'm going to regret not jumping on the special....

Well, I know the RE050A is a pretty new tire... I think they overstocked that particular tire... and I'm sure the price is on special because of winter...
Yes, rubber hardens, but not to the extent people believe. My S-03's have been on my car for 3yrs now. And the tire construction date says it was made in 2001. The tire isn't too hard, and it still has grip, but you shouldn't be driving a sports car on soon-to-be 6yr old rubber. Which is why I have to get new rubber... regardless of how much tread I have left on the S-03's.
I'll be putting the rims and tires on the Mazda3... just to wear them down... The mazda3 won't be able to put the stress on the tires that the FD would...

Summer tires go on sale in the winter because that seems like a reasonable time to have a sale on something that normally wouldn't be in demand - you see, you want people to be buying something from your store all through the year, regardless if they need the product then or not.
It doesn't make sense to sell winter tires in the winter when people are already buying them up.
Doesn't have anything to do with the tires being 'harder' in the winter. They'll 'soften' when it gets warm...

Bridgestone RE050A 140-AA-A 225/45R18 $182 @ Tirerack.com
Falken FK452 300-AA-A 225/45R18 $124 @ Edgeracing.com
more info on Falken FK452
longer tread wear, same traction rating and temp rating, both very similar in material compound, $58 cheaper & $232 cheaper if you buy all 4.
not advertising...just trying to make a point.

I'm always a little skeptical of 'cheaper' performance tires. OK, true, there probably is some reason in figuring out the price point of a tire if you go through sets of them every year (e.g. you auto-X, you track, you have funny camber settings). But most of us will probably go through a set every two or three years, which means you're probably not going to have more than three or four sets, including snows, if you own the car the average length of time.
It's a sports car, right? Might as well get awesome tires for it. Sure, it's overkill to put S03s on a slammed Del Sol, but then again, it's criminal to put Ecsta 712s on an M3.

If memory serves me right, the RE050 was the original tire that debut some time ago. The RE050 RFT is the run flat version of that model. Which debut slightly later than the RE050.
The RE050A automatically tells it's the Pole Position model. The true successor to the S-03 tire.
I don't think they make the RE050 anymore. The RE050A is the successor.
Don't forget the special RE050 Scuderia versions. Specially built for the Enzo!

Got the tires on Thursday. The due to increased shipping charges and my initial bad math the total came out to be around 900CAD. So savings were minimal. The good thing is that now, with the new tires laying around, I have a good excuse to finish the original Dunlops with a couple of track days as soon as winter is off.
