Received recall notice > Oil Cooler hose
I had just had an oil & filter change along with cabin filter / speaker brackets passenger side door tightened Wednesday May 21. The service tech mentioned I would be coming back in for a recall on the oil cooler hose ( may show premature amounts of corrosion due to the deposition of muddy water containing road salt, which may cause a perforation. Under sever conditions this may result in an engine oil leak).
Scope of recall, Mazda will replace the mud guards with modified ones and if necessary, replace the oil cooler hoses with modified ones, free of charge. Approximate repair time one hour, the service tech who informed me of this on Wednesday this week, said the 6MT may be longer due to the two coolers.
Production dates effected are RX8 vehicles produced from April 23, 2003 through October 15, 2007.
I received my letter Friday May 23, 2008 <> Have 2005 BB 6MT

Additional notice heading on the Mazda letter
I forgot to post the notice heading from the Mazda letter regarding the oil cooler hose recall
Special Service Program 76
Not sure if that's how Mazda tracks the specific RX 8 recalls

US owned
So I'm in the US and have this same problem, but Mazda said that it isn't covered. I asked them to look into ssp 76 that you posted, but customer service said that it didn't exist - seems that recalls are federally mandated and since I'm in the US, the recall only applies to Canada.
Has anyone else in the US had this problem?
Does anyone have a copy of the recall notice? I'm hoping to "convince" mazda to fix it for me, otherwise I can do it myself, but some part number assistance would be helpful.
The dealer wanted over $1100 to fix it which I think is pretty excessive to replace a hose.
Thanks.

Just had mine done. They don't replace your front mud guards (if equipped), I think they exchange a section of your undercar spoiler for another one...though I haven't checked yet.

i had mine recall done 2 weeks ago already, it wont let u feel much difference; well, its not even supposed to be much. i asked the service man why we have this recall and he had no idea; but at least it is free, and a new one is better than an old one having over 40k kms on it.

What they are calling the front mud guard in actually the wheel liners. They replace the whole section but the only change to it is a small additional piece to the inboard side. it's added to prevent a forward splash into the oil cooler line area.

recall is done regardless of warranty status or title status... if its an rx8 within the vin range its covered at no cost.
a recall is a recall..., should be covered in the USA, but perhaps it isnt a problem as canada is lots of snow and salt and what have you.
mazda wouldnt cover warranty for me when the same problem was addressed with another part... same problem different part... not covered?? mazda sucks.

I checked with MCI and you are correct that a recall will be done regardless if the vehicle has a salvage title providing it is done at a dealership and the vehicle is now roadworthy.

There is no recall list for Canadian residents yet. If you haven't recieved your letter in the mail it doesn't hurt to go down to Mazda to find out. If you have purchased the vehicle used, then you must call Mazda Canada up and register with them. That way they will notify you of any recalls for your vehicle. Once I registered my car I found 2 recalls that needed to be done. Soon after I recieved the letter for this one.

Great thanks guys. If someone could please post the recall letter that would be great. I have an '06 and Mazda denies that I need this recall, so having it on paper would help.

All we need is the serial number (and the car lol) to do the recall on the oil coolers, I believe it applies to all of them. We go to a section in Mazda's system and check for the recall, if it hasnt been done then we do it.

^ Agreed -- however while Mazda states that the recall is not on my VIN, the OP stated that this applies to all vehicles produced before October '07, so I am trying to determine which one is correct. The recalls usually have VIN ranges on them if it's only certain vehicles.

Had my appointment with the dealership this morning for the recall work. However had to reschedule for next week since two of the Rx-8 technicians booked off for vacation this week. I was expecting to get the repairs done, oh well. Means another trip to the dealer. Oh and before I left I took a peek in the showroom and spotted this. Thought i'd share.

Hey I recognize that car! I do apologize that the service dept didnt call you BEFORE you arrived at our dealership. If you call me personally before you come in to have the recall done I will see what I can do for you.

Thanks #84Racing. I understand the service department gets busy. No apologies necessary, i've always received excellent service from Scarboro Mazda. I'm scheduled for next wednesday July 26 mid morning.

I really appreciate that! We seem to have had a whole lot of RX8's in for service lately, and its tough to find techs that appreciate and understand them. Thats why we have 2 guys who we try and give most of the 8's to and try and find training for them where ever we can.
I am probably going to bring the R3 to the Meeting of the Mazda's

This is the recall letter you've been looking for. I also attached a copy of the invoice of what was done on this recall.
For people who haven't done the recall.. FYI this will take 2-4hours to complete. I would suggest to call ahead for an appointment. I will try to take pic of what was done. Cheers.

Hey Guys!! I too got the recall notice a while back and brought the car into Scarboro Mazda for service. It took longer then expected so they ended up paying for an over night rental for me. All things considered they gave me great service!! I will continue to to bring my car there for repairs/maintence.
As for the work, mud guards look great and I beleive I had one hose replaced.
