I think they will be hard pressed to get 5. 50?? Pipe dream. Possibly 50 if MAZDA paid $250 for people to come out.

hahahaha exactly... good luck of getting 50 cars up there... $250 for half day which prolly means 2 - 3 sessions at the most.... even with an instructor is still pricey!!

Once I get approval for my time off request, I will sign up.
Base on the responses, I guess no one else from this forum is going to join?
I've always wanted car manufacturers to do these kind of events, so even if this is a bit over-priced, I still want to give it a try and show some support.

ok.....I just got some more information, and I certainly have an opinion about it, but I don't want to sway anyone 1 way or the other, so I'll just post the information and let the discussion begin ha ha. Although I will highlight the parts that jump out at me!
"The RX-8 Experience was designed actually for new owners of RX-8s who purchased this year. It is a half-day track session at Mosport on the Grand Prix track - not just the development track. There will be a classroom on theory then a few exercises on the track and then the rest of the session is controlled lapping. This is a school - not a lapping day, so your insurance is still in effect. The instructors are from Driving Unlimited and we all have a racing background and are professional instructors - not just car club members who get an "instructors" designation after coming to a certain number of events. You will learn advanced vision techniques as well as learn about vehicle dynamics and how it effects traction. This is all done on the track. There will be a catered lunch provided and there are loaner helmets if you need one. It will be a very good day and you will learn a lot about driving as well as your cars capabilities.
The cost is $250 plus GST and we can take credit card payments."

I think it's great, but most of us don't own brand new RX-8. And like another poster said earlier, we couldn't even get 50 RX-8s to show up for FREE back in May, so good luck finding 50 new owners to pony up $250 each. How many RX-8 did Mazda Canada sell in 2006 and 2007? Must be in the very low thousands.
I think it's a really good deal, and I'd go if there is no model year restriction.

I don't agree with their shot at non-professional instructors. Just because they don't get paid doesn't mean they are any less talented.
My objection with this event is that it still isn't a good value at all for your money. $250 for half a day. That would be $1000 for a weekend. Compare that to any other school and it's a rip-off. And yes, other schools have lunch and technically insurance applies to all driving schools.

If you don't want to go, don't go. Other people who have never been on a real race track and want to know their limits as well as their cars are going to go. It'll be even better if fewer people show up because it'll mean more seat time.

Unless of course that lunch is some sort of fine dining experience
It's a good effort by mazda, but it really should be open to all model years, and be a whole day experience.

I totally agree that any event that's put out by the manufacture will turn out to be a great function, but limiting the model year owners is just a lil bit none-sense.
One thing I'm sure of is that the people that own newer 8s and are going to the event will have a great time!!

Only '06 and '07's? How smart is that? Plus those that bought the latest years probably got theirs for the cheapest prices. AND we all know the earlier models are faster.

wow...can't say I'm shocked. I have an 06 and never got a letter about it. When I saw it in this forum I emailed them to inquire. Got some details. When I told them I might be interested and asked more questions they blanked me. I emailed them again just to rule out a communications break down. Still no reply. Must have been too much trouble to reply, so IMO they got what they deserved.
I do feel for anyone here that had signed up though, but it looks like it wasn't well organized to begin with.

The cancellation email was from Driving Unlimited. It did not give a reason for the cancellation, but I think we can all guess that already. They apologized on behalf of Mazda Canada.
I don't know if the whole thing was poorly organized or not. From my experience eveyrthing was fine in terms of communication. However, the person I contacted with from beginning to end is actually one of the instructor herself. And from what I know she's also a race driver. I am surprised that there isn't an admin person to handle the organizing/communication/promotional part, and that a racer/instructor has to assume that role as well.

Driving Unlimited is a very well-organized company. And I'm guessing you talked to Malenie, she's the only female instructor with DU. Well I guess the part that sucks is that Mazda Canada is NOT aggressive enough to put the deal together. If they open the registration for all RX8/ RX7 owners, they would prolly be able to put this event together with enough people.

I just watched the ALMS race that I had on my PVR recorded a couple weeks back.
As I had just come back from the last kensai day, I had a fresh appreciation for the course. After watching the race, I don't think I want to take my car around mosport again! It just seems so pedestrian compared to these cars.
The only consolation I had was that I wasn't running that much slower than a 997 GT3. Only about 5-6 seconds a lap slower. This is bone stock on street tires. The GT3 was hitting 250 by the end of the back straight, I was at 180 indicated (about 3km/h optomistic) - just this section alone is worth 5 seconds.
These ALMS guys are nuts!
LMP1 cars going into turn 8 almost flat.
Turn 4? 160mph
End of the back straight? 190mph.
3 wide around turn 2?
I know they are race cars and everything but seriously - that is amazingly fast.
And the lines they have to take around there are all over the place with the different classes - must be a great race to watch live!
The castrol touring cars are back at Mosport September 15,16.
The civic running in this does a 1:32 around the track. This is with around 220hp to the wheels.

Maybe, but it's common courtesy to reply to an email. Especially when a person is expressing an interest in that email to pay over the odds for a half day of lapping.
Regardless, it's still a shame it was cancelled. As you correctly say if it was open to 7 and 8s then it probably would have went ahead.
