Yeah I read in the tech garage forum here. I have yet to have problems with my car. In fact I get good mileage ~425 per tank. She doesn't burn that much oil in that I only really add extra about every other month.

I don't care whether I get the new engine or not. What I do care about is the resale value of my car after this gets out to the general public. Regardless of my car's track record, I have a feeling that it's value will be affected by this recall.

I'd say the value has already been affected by its poor gas mileage, and the fact that its been 4 years in production without changes. Not complaining here, I liked my deal on my '05!

Reading this recall detail, it seems to affect engines in notoriously hot Arizona type climates, and those owners who use synthetics in particular. Still, the recall is not an engine replacement, its just a test that if failed can lead to an engine replacement. The problem is, they'll replace it with a "reconditioned" motor...yikes!

Put it another way: early current generation M3s were notorious for drivetrain failures - it hasn't exactly dented resale values. 350Zs are also rife with early problems, but both the G35C and the 350Z are reselling well.

Sports car enthusiasts will be accepting enough to put up with the occasional quirk, provided that the manufacturer is willing to recognize when there are true problems.

Mazda may be saying that...but it's a bunch of BS. There are many of us that don;t use synthetic oil ans don't live in hot climates. I would call Calgary hot...yet I'm on my third engine.


If you have been reading all the Recall threads....2 here and one on the dark side it would seem that the problem ihas moe to do with the fuel and oil metering relating back to when the car was first introduced over here with the revised engine HP (flash).

They aren't having the same problem down-under and much of Europe or Japan like they are in North America.

As per usual, a little information is a dangerous thing! Like other recalls, I would expect the number of CANADIAN vehicles to be in the 100's if any at all. Our market only receives between 1000-1500 RX-8 per year, so the number of vehicles affected will be very few. If the recall is posted by MCI, the day I receive anything in writing I will post it for all to read.

Just out of interest, what are the implications of not getting the engine replaced should Mazda "deem" it required??

From what I understand if you refuse to change the engine and then have problems down the road, I BELIEVE that Mazda could refuse the repair. I am not sure about this because no one that I know of has ever refused a new engine! I remember with the recalls on 1993 RX-7's, if you didnt do them and had a problem it would void your warranty. In this case I am really not sure.

I'm crossing my fingers that mine is ok and that the flash will resolve any potential trouble. Hmmm ... maybe we should get the Japanese flash ... heh heh ... get back up to 247hp as well

I think the problem in not hot climates but dry climates. The combination of both is the worst factor. The west coast has much less humidity and this affects the rotary negatively. This is just a guess but most engine replacements were in vegas and arizona. Both are very dry hot places.

well I got my car back after its second heart transplant. It's nice to have it back. The official cause of the last failure was loss of compression on the rear rotor.

It says they will be doing a vacuum test. If your car doesn't pass the vacuum test then they will replace the engine.

I just took ownership of this sexxy beast. So far I love the thing to death.
Such a nice ride, power is there when you want it to be and I just love it to death.
I know this is not the type of car to be ignored. you really have to baby the motor and take care of it all the time.
This posting made me nervous so I did some more digging and actually went ahead and called the local dealership (scarb Mazda)
The service guy said he hasn't heard anything at all about this potential recall.
Is that to say it's not true? or the memo has yet to be received by that particular dealership?
I dunno. It seems odd to me.

^^That's because mazda Canada is behind the states by a couple of months (typically). I usually just wait until a TSB is issued or in this case, it's supposed to be a voluntary recall from mazda so I will wait until I get my letter. Either that or wait until I hear on this board that someone from Canada has brought it in then I'll go and bug my dealer.

I just thought you should no that there have been problems with the oil injection systems on the 8s. If your car is not using the amount of oil required you may not be getting the correct lubrication in your motor. So check to make sure your oil injection system is working properly.

We just got notification of a pending recall from MCI about this issue. It states "this is an emission related recall campaign and is related to extreme hot weather operation. In Canada the affected vehicles will require a PCM program update, and possibly the replacement of the leading spark plugs." It says nothing about vacuum testing or engine replacement. This is all the info we have to date, it also says customers will be notified by mail if their vehicle is affected. I will keep you posted on any further updates.
