Don't be nervous, just wait for #84Racing to update us. Besides, he IS Scarb Mazda

Based on what I read in the recall thread, this may be leading to some of the problems. It seems those who take it easy on their cars and don't rev the rpm's regularly seem to be the ones most affected.

I'm not saying this is everyone who's had an engine replacement, but based on the new mapping supposedly injecting more oil at lower rpms while leaning out the fuel mixture, and most engines replaced to date in hotter / dryer climates with low km trips, this may be the case. Of course this is all based on nothing official from Mazda yet.

Indeed, after more random reading and searches (believe it or not)
It seems common concensus is to rev the **** out of it at least once in a while.
I was refferring more so to keeping the oil topped up and avoiding the flood problem.

Who's the guy at Scarb Mazda? do you work in the service department?

Thanks,

OK...for those of you who where sleeping though class, here is the history.

My first engine blew at around 4700kms. It was a weird one. It would start no problem but after running the car for over 1/2 hour if you shut it off you couldn’t start it again until it was cold. They have to fly someone in from Toronto to diagnose the problem. They also did some tests on the oil and found metal in it. I never got a final answer to what happened to it but none the less. The engine was replaced. This engine came from Japan.

Ok, right away after the engine was replaced I noticed that it had better power, better gas mileage and even sounded quite different from my first engine. I averaged about 2 mpg better in the city with this one and 4 better on the highway. With this engine I was always the first one in town to get any flash updates. I had my oil changed by the dealer always ahead of schedule and I never raced the car. I drove it "spirited" but I never thrashed the car.

Fast forward to 2 years later almost to the week. I was taking off from a traffic light. Half way across I head a pop and I lost all power but the engine did not die right away. About 1/2 block later it died. I tried to start it again. It took a couple of tried and then finally fired. It was very rough so I shut it down right away and called for the flatbed truck to come pick it up.

The dealer called me several days later and said the engine would have to be replaced. The rear rotor had lost all compression. The new engine this time came from the Stated and is a rebuild not new like the first replacement.

I now have the car back and am going through the break in period again. As pissed off as I am about having to replace my engine 2 times I still love this car.

Sorry to hear that Rotten, that is too weird. Hope it’s isolated, maybe it’s something in the Calgary air, or maybe you keep driving over all that money you Calgarians are making.

As for 84 Racing, he sells accessories cheaper than any other dealer I tried. He also sounds very informed in all his posts, plus he races, so a good guy to have here.

Rotten, once they sent a guy from Toronto, the matter should have been resolved immediately and permanently. Afterall, he's from the center of the universe and lives in the best city in Canada and about 325 miles from the best hocket team on the globe too!

You must have tampered with the engine. I told you a thousand times; don't use 20-50 just because it comes out of your back yard hose that way!

Actually, I don't use a lot of oil. Maybe 2 litres every 5,000KM and I boot it a minimum of a couple of times a week. I usually shift at 3,000 - 4,000 RPM routinely though.

This thread is starting to get me real concerned.

Just out of interest, what are the implications of not getting the engine replaced should Mazda "deem" it required??
one warm day shortly after as you turned left across a busy intersection your car would stall and would refuse to be re-started. quite posibly distracted drivers would plow into you causing all sorts o fdamage and personal injury.

Read the previous threads the details are all there. We just got an update from MCI, the letters will be going out in September. I believe you will be happy when you see what MCI is going to do for the RX-8 owners!

I'm at Westowne Mazda right now, they're saying they haven't heard anything about it yet...

You say we'll be happy with what MCI is going to do, will it be any different than what Mazda US is going to do?

I dont know what the U.S. is doing, I know that the letters will be going out in September, dealers who have not read the dealer portal today wont know what is going on. No parts are available yet or anything, so I would ask that you all have patience and when you get your letter go to your dealer and have the repairs done. From what I understand you may receive a rental car for the day at no charge and a vehicle wash and vacuum. Like I said before, nothing is written in stone until you receive your recall and we receive the actual bulletin.

So MNAO is extending their powertrain warranty south of the border for a year to match our 5 year/100kms. So us Canucks will get nothing I'll assume?? Our better warranty was some consolation whenever I heard of someone picking up a new RX8 for $22000USD down south.

Anyhoo, I'll assume we'll get the exact same test and if our engines fail, we'll also get them replaced...not just new leading plugs.
