RX8 build up

2004 RX8 build up
Dyno testing performed by the Streetpower crew on a Dyno Dynamics digital dyno
Engine stock dyno at 158 rwhp with DSC fuse pulled
We did 10 pulls back to back with fuse pulled and with the switch turned off I got a more consistent number at 158 rwhp with fuse pulled.
With switch off I had hp numbers range from 149 to 162 but was never consistent. I did 6 pulls and all the numbers were different.
With fuse pulled 3 out of 4 pulls gave us 158.9, 158.3, 158.7 and 159.
Sprint Booster:
Installed netted no change in throttle response or hp
The engine seam to rev faster but no hard evidence there was any improvements to justify using this device.
There was 2 settings hi and low we made another 10 pulls to verify but no change so we removed it
Cobb AP installed we made a + 10 hp increase to the rear wheels with their stage 1 map but that map is unsafe we saw air fuel go as high as 15.1:1 AF at the top end
Stock with Cobb 168rwhp
Next 10 pulls is with the HKS Hipower cat back
We gained +8 rwhp which averaged out throughout the 10 pulls
Stock with Cobb and HKS cat back 176rwhp

Next up will be a Steve Kan tune in April and a racing beat midpipe
Also got full suspension
Gtspec full bracing frt back and under
HSD coil overs
Progress sway bars frt and rear
Endlinks?
Track rims and tires
Weight savings
pics and vids to come

I didn't think the catback would make that much difference. (I bet it sounds a lot louder.)
I think the midpipe will have a big impact...can't wait.

Also looking forward to the midpipe. I may have to pick up a new cat-back though (currently running stock). And I've wanted a COBB AP, but you saying their stage 1 map is unsafe worries me. Time to do some more research :D

Thanks for sharing dude.

if you're looking to get a AP.. just get it from MazdaManiac... he has custom base tunes and will work with you remotely to get you custom tuned. Please he's the only distributor for RX-8 AP's now.

How did you squeeze out 198WHP? Mods? Tuning? Engine rebuild? That front bumper fitment is horrid, I would get that taken care of.

Cool. Stuff like this amazes me, all this effort and you get 198WHP. Shady was on a basically stock rebuild and made 220WHP.

Ok, I don't get this the RX-8 has 238 crank hp with a average loss of 20% to the rear wheels, should not the base number be closer to 238 - 20% = 47.6 or 190.4 rwhp. Of course this is only on paper, but a base RX-8 with good compression in both rotors and in good working order should get more than 159 rwhp. This is a whopping 33.2% loss from crank to rear wheels, something is mechanically wrong. Correct me if I'm wrong!

You are correct, a proper stock RX-8 usually puts down about 185-190 to the wheels, and sometimes you get freak engines that are closer to 200WHP. Shady's car is near stock but he rebuilt his motor himself and made 220 to the wheels with a Cobb tune.

A solid 8 with good proven intake, exhaust, midpipe, header, MM Cobb tune, can make 210-220HP all day. Jedi's car is a good example.

^I've been to a few dyno pulls in my days, and generally base number that are that far off the 20% mean other problem SSV, bad compression etc. etc. and not just with rotaries. This is a really bad base number, stop modifying till you find the real issue is only logical, no disrespect to the OP. But if you can get the base number up the true value of mods will come thru maybe, 8 hp out of a catback is not unheard but generally on a 8 thats the upper end. If it's ported the numbers should be a lot higher!

I'm working with Modified Mag on Project RX-8, I'm building and porting a new engine for it. Not sure if any of you have been following it but Dave Pratte (Project RX-8 owner) took his car to Mazda and had a compression test done, it just barely passed the minimum specs.
The car put down 170whp

Read the article about the exhaust install and dyno numbers

http://www.modified.com/projectcars/...ing/index.html

I have a hunch the OP engine is a hurting unit.

Here is the article showing the compression test
