I really hate to be that guy, but if you want MAD power and more reliable than the day it rolled off the assembly line, then do the LS1 V8 swap.
400 WHP N/A and still get 35-40mpg on the hwy.
BTW Rotaries are awesome!

Well if the proper deal was found on an LS1 swap (engine, trans, wiring, ecu) I'd say the entire swap including the powerplant shouldn't cost anymore than $10,000.
We've measured up an LS1 block and T56 6speed tranny and compared it to our 04 RX-8 shell....and it seems like a perfect fit.

Again, Rotaries are awesome....but damn the LS1's are rediculous.
We built a 1969 Camaro with an LS1/T56 powerplant. The engine has a cam, ported heads, headers, and a tuneable ECU and it made 550 Flywheel HP on the engine dyno and a tad over 500ft/lbs for torque.
All Aluminum block and heads, only weighs 75lbs more then a full long block 13B.

^ but it sits up higher too, right? With the weight higher, it might throw off some of the balanced handling that we all love so much about the 8. Or am I off-base with this comment?

Well it is a dimentionally larger engine, but the engine wouldn't have to sit higher unless clearance issues wont allow it to sit lower in the engine bay.
Its one of those things where its never been done before, so nobody really knows until someone does it lol.

LSx Engines are bullet proof, the LS1/2 swaps are regularly done in E36 body style BMW's. I have personally sat in one, and it threw me around when shifting. Doing mid 500's all motor.

Well I kept threating to swap one into my race car when we were having all the troubles earlier this year. An engineer friend of mine who helped me with my chassis told me and I quote "you put a V8 in that and I wont help you anymore". He worked on one years ago and said the V8 threw the dynamics of chassis way out. The car was a missle in a straight line but could never get it to turn properly. If you put the engine far enough back and low enough it would work, but that would take massive mods to a FC or RX8 chassis. Btw, if you look at our in car video's you will notice that we blow by all the V8 cars in our class up the long back straight. Peripheral Port power forever!!!!!!!!!!!!
(or until it blows up!)

^ That's what I was worried about. If all i cared about was power, I would probably by a Mustang. Ok then, back the turbo and SC discussion...

Hey Scott, don't mean to sound ****, but your car is far from an asset to anyone other than you.
From a market standpoint we suffer from some serious diminishing returns.
I say walk away from it for a couple weeks then see if it is still something you really want, especially considering the last event you were at showcased dynoing a turbo

Ya, but thats Alex's car. Honestly if your gonna do turbo, do it right, get the kit, the upgrade kit and the ignition, mod. Seeing as how he already has one of the above done, all he needs is the turbo kit and upgrade. Tuning can be done with the Cobb he already has. and with the BHR clutch and flywheel combo he has, it wont be heavy onthe tranny.
