Angry Should have stayed home today

You know its gonna be a bad day when things start to snap off in the RX8. This morning i started my car (-35 with windchill in the T.O) the car started no problem.. But when i went to take down the hand brake a part of the plastic snapped off...Im not too impressed...trying to see if the dealer will fix under warranty....otherwise i may have to opt for the leather wrapped hand break..

freezing in the T.O

Just a little follow up.. the dealership said that the repair can be done under warranty...as for the leather handbrake..they want $575 + tax to install...thats not including the shifter..

i just talked to a friend at prima mazda and he said that both the sqeaking/rattling while the heat is on low and handbrake should be covered under warrenty.

I'll keep you posted.

Yep! Yesterday I washed my 8 for the first time this year! And then drove home through back roads to avoid a lot of mud being kicked up by cars in front of me.

Same thing happened to my handbrake the other day....when it was -29 here in Calgary. Just about lost an eye with the flying piece of plastic!! Have to take the "8" in for an oil change soon and will talk to the Service Manager about the warranty repair at that time.

Wow... more and more people are experiencing the hand brake problem this winter. Mazda should release a TSB on this.

Which piece, exactly, is breaking?

The hand brake handle is soft vinyl, so is it freezing solid and then snapping?

The piece that broke is the plastic part at the bottom of the handbrake..its the piece of plastic you see at the bottom when the handbrake is pulled up..and the long plastic piece you see when the handbrake is pulled down..

I seem to remember reading in the manual that the handbrake shouldn't be used in real cold weather -- due to freezing up, not breaking. That makes it useless for about half the year around here!

When I had the problem with my gas pedal yesterday morning, and released the hand brake, I heard a big like crack/bang, I thought I broke the hand broke off, but looked down, seemed fine. Going to have to take a look at it closely later to see if in deed I did break something.

How can't you use a hand brake in the cold, I can't park my 8 on the driveway without the handbrake, or it goes rolling down into the street

Saugaboy, just keep the car in 1st gear. It won't roll away. My hand brake light doesn't go out when its below -5C. I have to slam it down a few times until the light goes out. But I can tell the line or something is still frozen and does not allow it to go down all the way. I doubt the handbrake is engaged at that point any way.

Your spot on..its happened to me a few time when its really cold. the parking brake light stays on and you have to slam it down for it to go off..thats what happens when you use cheap plastic

Shamblerock, Yah I know what you mean about that under -5 handbrake thing. When the car is all warmed up in the morning, i go, and hold the handbrake down for about 15 to 30 seconds, then it stays. I've tried keeping it in 1st gear without the handbrake on my driveway, the car won't stay, goes straight for the street. Couldn't believe it, not sure if it was just that time i tried, or if it actually would happen everytime, i'll try again tomorrow after work to see if it will stay on my driveway without the handbrake

It appears that I cracked that F'in plastic piece of sh*t under the handbrake towards the front too. What "GREAT" quality. Mazda probably knew of that problem, and then says not to use the handbrake. That's like you get a flat tire once, then you're never suppose to drive again your car. What B/S

Saugaboy, if the car rolls while in gear, that is a huge issue and it should certainly be checked out. Perhaps it wasn't fully in gear??? Strange. Try again for sure. About the hand brake, what can I say but take it easy when you pull up and down. I know you shouldn't have to but its a bitch. So far I don't think I broke any pieces yet.

BTW how were those RX-8 video I gave to you, were you able to get them to play?
