so i check my oil yesterday

I took my car for an oil change last week. Pull into the gas station today too check the oil, one problem.....THE DIPSTICK IS GONE?????? the idiots at mazda didnt put it back in......so im sitting there thinking, what to do now??? ends up they left it under the hood over the vent compartment (infront of the wipers) so luckily I saw it lying there, and checked the oil level. they over filled it of course, but i was pretty mad that not only did they almost lose my dipstick, but they also over filled the oil.....oh well, everything is good now....just make sure you always have the dipstick!!!

go back and blame them
cuz last time i have a custom oil cap.. and they LOST it.. frist i didn't realize is was missing, then when i park my car inside my garage.. i smell the engine oil.. i was like.. urmm what is going on? leak?.. i pop my hood.. and i saw my cap is GONE.. and engine oil was everywhere in the engine bay.. i went back.. and talk to them. they said.. o i am really sorry. and refunded my service fee and give me a life time FREE lube oil filter... and give me back a stock one.. i was pretty mad at the momment.. but after that they said life time free.. so i don't really mind

maybe that what u should do

Last time I checked the car wouldn't run without the oil cap....how do they miss something like that? Changing the oil yourself is better than having the lube-kid/lotboy do the oil X like they do at some dealerships.

I drive a block away and check everything out. My first oil change, they removed the filter, the gasket apparantly didn't come completely off and they put the new filter on unproperly seated. Oil mess. Idiots...

Be glad it's just the dipstick.

I've seen a guy pull out of a service department and drive 50m up the road and have his wheel come off because some apprentice forgot to tighten the wheel nuts.

Glad you found it, I guess the guy who did the oil change adds new meaning to the word dipstick.

Ever had an older car where the gas cap isn't connected to the opening? In the days of full service gas stations, this numptie filled my tank to the brim than forgot to put the cap back on. I drive away then discover an overwhelming smell of gas a few miles away....what a mess. Going back to the service station to look for the cap doesn't help, he put it on top of my car!

I had my oil change recently at the dealership and found they also overfilled oil. Dip stick showed at least 1" above the top line. I heard it is also not good to have too much motor oil but don't understand why. Anyone know if there is issue with that?

Should I drain some oil out, or just leave it at 1" above the top line on the dipstick?

What's up with the dealerships these days. I hear oil overfills on this forum once every other week. Labor costs are inflating but the service we get are getting more and more retarded. If the dealership can't even get an oil change right, then what are they good for? Sorry, but this is quite depressing.

Missing dipstick isn't so bad - here's what happened when I forgot to replace my oil-filler cap

I had poor service from Airport Mazda and OK from Westowne Mazda. They are the only ones I have had experience with. St. Catherines Mazda is excellent however.

hmmmm... I haven't had any problems with oil changes at dealerships (before I started doing them myself)... I find Mr. Lube to be good too since they do it in front of you and you can tell if they forgot the put the cap back on or something lol
but hey any vancouver owners can bring theirs over to my house (preferrably on sundays) and I can do a change for you at the dealer price and I promise to put the dipstick back too (or you money back! :D) :D

Overfilled oil done at Avante Mazda North York where I bought my 8. The service dept appears to conduct business in a very professional manner, but I can sense they have some attitude issues. I had some rough edges with them re air conditioning and speaker.

So my question again - should I drain some oil out because the dipstick shows 1" above the top line ??? ANYONE ??? (gord, shamblerock, or even mic!)

Advice?
Do your own oil change.
You don't need a jack or any special tools.
You will have the comfort of knowing:
the oil was drained sufficiently
the filter was on just right
the oil level is where it should be.

Total 1 time investment - oil drip pan, oil filter wrench, 1/2" drive socket wrench if you don't have one, socket extension if you don't have one.

The oil filter wrench I use has a square hole in it to accept a 1/2" drive socket. Works great.
