I got this service letter as well, but I'm not bringing the car in until my next oil change. I haven't flooded the car yet, and have not had any problems starting it in cold weather.

For example, last week I was in Fernie. The car sat outside in -20 temperatures all night long, and started right away in the morning.

Anyone have anything in writing regarding the ssp61?
I phoned my dealer who didnt have a clue what I was talking about.
Actually it was some kid who said he just started a week ago.
I would like to have something in writing I can show the service manager.

WDS is something like "Worldwide Data System" or "World Download System" - it's the computer network used by Ford and Mazda dealers to download the latest software diagnostics versions and PCM flashes to their local diagnostic computers. When a Mazda dealer downloads a new WDS version, he gets the latest flashes for all Mazda vehicles that have flash-able ECU/PCMs.

Gordon

I've received no such letter from Mazda. Does anyone know if it depends on build date ? Mine is an April 04 build.

Sauga I did read your post, but could you scan the actual letter and post it for us maybe in pdf format?
It would be more credible than printing something of an internet message board.
In addition to the new flash, I am gonna get a more powerfull battery as well as a "battery tender" charger.

Has anyone with a CanScan got the SSP 61 flash.....IE is it the same fuel maps as "M".....or am I going to have to redo some tuning after the flash?

I hope that they have just changed the cold start protocol......and haven't touched anything else. ( or are they like Canon cameras....tell you they are fixing something small....and totally redo the exposure programming ) :D

I'm going to reset to stock...and do a few baseline runs....get the flash and redo them....to see if anything changed??

Your gas cap may have been loose. Do you have a busreader to see what the cel was?

If it was the gas cap it should have been in the P0441-P0456 range ( Evaporative control system)

If it is a one time thing it won't come back

I understand where you are coming from, but this fix is supposed to be for winter starting and my car is stored in the winter. Plus it has never flooded on me at all yet, so I see no reason for myself to go. If it floods then I'll probably get it done. But I don't want to have my car in and out of the dealer for every little flash that they do. I'll wait until there are finished "tinkering" and then I'll get it done.

Just had my 8 into dealer for regularly scheduled maintenance. When I dropped it off the person on the desk indicated there was a reflash that I needed. I already had the M flash done in November, so I figured it was the SSP 61. When I went back to pick it up, the service manager told me they didn't reflash as there is still a problem with this update and Mazda is still working on the problem.

I got the same word from Sunridge Mazda last week - there are apparently some gremlins with the reflash, so they are not performing it at this time. No word as to a fix.

Cheers

Ditto to you and BARK - on Jan 25 in the Calgary sightings thread, I posted
I had it in for my 24K km service last Thursday at Kramer, and SSP #61 was one of the things they were supposed to do. I had asked about the WDS version and she told me they had 25.11 - which sounded newer than the 25.2 needed for the latest flash version. BUT, when they phoned me back that day, they said they were told that day to NOT flash with the current WDS as it still had the faulty flash that generates false CELs. There were two other parts needed that were back-ordered, so when I go back in a week or two I should get the SSP #61 done... hopefully!
The Thursday mentioned was Jan 20, so it sounds like 1 week later, they still don't have it fixed.

Regards,
Gordon

You guys are right. There is a bug in the new flash. It trips a CEL light that doesn't go away with a reprograming of the PCM. My dealer says it should be about two weeks before the new flash hits Canada. In the meantime I have to run the car with the CEL light on. Oh well if something really goes wrong it's covered under warranty.

Blue Frenzy....I had the 8 into North Hill and they did not specify what the problem was with the new flash, only that Mazda had advised them not to reflash anyone until further notice. They are to advise me when they hear more.

I double checked with my service department in regards to this re-cal... appreantly they have done a couple on some of the 8s but it will cause an engine light on....

I still haven't done mine and the car seems perfectly fine, I guess it really depends on how you start the car and make sure u gotta warm it up...
