Summer tire comparison: weight savings

Footman you always start the greatest threads! Grip vs Weight, what a great subject. I honestly couldnt care less about 3 lbs per tire if there was going to be a 3-4 per lap advantage by having a softer tread compound. You also have to look at why the tire is heavier, more steel belts or thicker carcass to prevent punctures? You have to fundamentally realize whether your buying a street/comfort tire or a perfomance/track tire.
For my 2 cents worth Toyo has never made anything that gives good longevity on the street every one I have seen has had some bizarre wear traits after 20-30k and their R compound track tires are always 2+ seconds slower than a BFG or Hoosier R Compound. I told a few people at Scion Speed Michelin is coming with a whole new high performance tire this spring that will be lower priced and higher performance. If it were my money I would wait until spring and see what they bring to the party!

i've ran two sets of avs es 100's 225/40/18's 235/40/18's falken 615 255/40/18's and now using michelin pilot sport a/s plus's 235/45/18. go with the stickiest set of tires you can afford. andrew id hate for you to buy something that doesn't live up to your expectations specially after you have spent so much money on the suspension your car deserves some good sticky tires.
no matter what you put on your car they're going to be heavier than what they're replacing. worn tires feel quite a bit lighter than new ones at least a few pounds.

Nate340,
That is why I want the best price/performance tire I could get with a bias towards the performance side. I need really high grip. I recently acquired a company vehicle so Natalia is NO LONGER DAILY DRIVEN TO/FROM WORK YAY!
This coming winter I have the option of driving it afterwork and weekends only when it's not thick in snow! LOWERING WIN!

If you want best bang for the buck in max performance I would go with Star Specs.
Don`t know about Canadian prices as I get all my stuff in the USA but tirerack has 225/45/18s listed at 200USD. Our dollar should be above the USD in about a week and tire rack may have a better deal in the winter.
Also, I think they are a little wider than common tires so you may not need to go to 245, 225 are plenty on a car like the 8.

We posted our faster laps with Toyo over Hoosiers and advans slicks
We gave up on the hoosier after one weekend lol Didnt seem to get the grip out of them. I think we did a 1 sec faster with the ra1 over the advans which is weird...

The Toyo R888 are the pits compared to the RA-1. When we switched back in 2008 we couldn't figure out what the hell was going on. It had less grip and howled in every corner at Mosport. Finally we figured out that you need to run them on lower pressure, so I kept letting the air out of those POS without telling the driver ("yep 38psi hot at all four corners, I just checked"), and it gets faster and faster. Eventually we were down to 34psi hot or something ridiculous.
There is a guy in the competition forum that swears his Star Spec is faster than the R888 at VIR.
I have to say though if I have a weekend-only car, I'd love to throw some R-compound on it just for sh-ts and giggles. Imagine how fast you can find a parking spot at Yorkdale if you never have to slow down, lol.

^ Good choice. What tire size you going with?
Climacus - I ran StarSpec as a track tire. Like most street tires they give up after a while, I doubt they are better than r888s.
And why is 33 hot ridiculous, various koni/conti teams ran their spec hoosiers at 33/34 hot. Different tires have different optimal temps.

With your suspension mods and those tires you are going to have on 'sticky' car.
My personal view is that there is no need in going to a 245 wide tire for the street on this particular car. The Star Specs seem a bit wider than most tires and are very sticky. 225s are lighter, offer slightly better steering feel, transmit less vibration and create less road noise overall.
But if you are going with a 245/45 and decided to buy new rims, I would probably go with a 9 wide wheel. You can of course fit them on 8s but they would sit better on a 9.
I ran 235/45/17 on the track on a 17x9 Enkei wheel and to my non professional eyes they fit very well.
Throw in a proper alignment and a set of sways and you will be set.
I may even post a pic.

Suppose I am unable to get the funding next spring for new rims, which means I will be mounting new tires onto my stock OEM wheels.
Would you then recommend the stock 225/45/18? The OEM tires Dunlop Sport SP 8090 appear "stretched" over the stock wheels.
I heard that not all tires have the same "contact patch" width even though they are the same overall tire size.

Street tires on a street driven car, 225/45 on 18x8 should be fine.
As I mentioned before, I fail to see the point 245s as street tires on this car anyhow, unless your hobby is robbing banks and your really need the 3% cornering advantage in police chases. This is especially true with a tire like the Star Spec that offer fantastic grip to begin with.
That is of course just my personal opinion, I know allot of people on here that think running 255/45 street tires on an rx8 is great. It really comes down to the factors that influence your decision.

The 8 only makes a certain amount of power. No need to be putting on wider rubber on a car that hasn't seen a significant horsepower jump.
I've personally never trusted Dunlop tires. They always seem way behind the curve. This might change since I think they're official sponser for a racing series this coming year.
But I'd still wouldn't choose them.
Speaking of tires, my stock Bridgestones RE050A that came on the Miata are toast. They lasted pretty well considering the amount of driving I do. But alas, they're completely ruined. A slight vibration is starting to develop as well due to the wear on the tires.
Thankfully I'll be getting off them since the cold weather is starting to come around.
Next season she'll receive some RE11's!!

Andrew why not split the difference and go with 235/40/18's
pro's
overall more grip
shorter gear ratio
speedometer almost perfectly accurate.
stiffer sidewall
more sporty feel
con's
lower ride height
harsher ride
slight hit in fuel economy
slight decrease in top speed

Nate,
Yes, to a degree. Which is why the engineers probably settled for 225's instead of sucking more fuel by going up to 245's.
In all honesty, the majority of the time you're driving straight. Unfortunately we don't have the roads they have over in Europe.
Stick with 225's. The car hasn't received a power gain.. might as well get the best of both worlds.

I've noticed that the prices on the Dunlop Star Spec have skyrocketed this year (we're talking about a 33% price increase since March). I had to look up the country of origin for these tires. Turns out they are imported from Japan, so they got killed on the USDJPY exchange rate. You can thank Ben Bernanke next time you smoke your tires.

the tread wear number on the tire is a good indicator of stickyness
the higher the number the the less sticky they are
usually the slip angle charts dont change much.. they basically suck with the higher numbers
