sunoco ultra 94 vs. normal 91
Hi - not a lot of these 94 octane posts in the forums since most people don't have 94 offered in their city.
But in toronto sunoco's got ultra 94 gas. Is anyone using this in Toronto and how does it compare to 91?
thx

I don't know how it compares.... But I only use Pioneer 93 in my car. If you don't already know, it's sunoco 94 in different badging as sunoco supplies pioneer. Plus most pioneer gas stations that have 93 don't have 91 and when you buy 93 you get triple bonus bucks back to.. (like crappy tire money). Which helps save on the gas prices too.

Of course 87 is going to work "fine". The ECU is making all the nessasary changes to the maps so the engine doesn't kill itself.
This is the type of thing I still dont' understand about people. They buy a nice car and then refuse to either take care of it or use the proper fuel.
I know the price of fuel is high, but it doesn't excuse you from putting in fuel lower than the manual has specified.
This is all it takes to make the engine go kaput! And then the owner has the nerve to say the engine doesn't work right and you shouldn't buy the car.
Kudos to MyRxBad. He's gone beyond the call of duty in putting in Ultra 94! Plenty of protection for that engine!
Which is more than I can say for some people... :o

Are Canadian octane ratings different than U.S.? My manual says that 87 octane is O.K. to use but that it will "slightly reduce performance". I went from using premium 93 to mid-grade 91 and have noticed no change in performance or milage. I'm thinking about trying regular to see how the car reacts.

I have only used 894 octane since I got her, and nothings went wrong for me, though, Dan had me thinking about trying 87 for a bit and seeing how it goes.

zzum-zum,
Like I said, going from 91 to 93 will probably do nothing for you. Just adds that extra little protection. The engine was rated for 91 so you shouldn't use anything less than 91.
Dannybeach,
Hmmm, I think you got things in reverse?? The engine starts to ping if you're not using the correct octane rating. The only way your engine was pinging is if you were using 87 and you moved up to 91. You can't have this symptom in the reverse way... lol
Inconsequential,
89 octane is a mid level rating. It's neither low or high. So yes, theortically the engine should be alright. However, if you do start to drive on a colder than usual day/night and you start to use the car up a bit, you'll notice the difference.
Remember, engineers specified 91 octane for a reason. They're trying to give you the most performance with the least amount of troubles. If you start to use 87 octane all the time in the car don't expect the engine to last too long. Especially when the car begs to be driven in a hard fashion.
My manual says to use 96 octane for the car. And this is when it was stock! You can't find 96 octane anywhere, so it also says the lowest you can go would be 91 octane. Just expect a performance hit. Well, I don't take any chances so I only use Ultra 94. I make sure wherever I go there's a Sunoco station (or Pioneer) where they carry the ultra high stuff.
These engines won't like it if you use anything lower than the manual has specified.... Just a warning...

I've only used Sunoco Ultra 94. My mechanic friend swears by Sunoco gas and is of the strong opinion it is the best out there and I only use 94. It helps that it's also the closest gas station to my house! I also use it in my Contour SVT. It hurts that it's 12 cents more than regular but with frugal timing, I have avoided paying over a dollar a litre so far.

My 7 was running like **** on Sunoco, bogging down, stalling, pretty much freaking out. I've run base Sunoco, and 94. Same results.
I suspected after a few tanks that it may be the gas. I have since adjusted the TPS among other minor issues, so I'm sure that was a contributor, but nevertheless when I switched over to Petro gas (before I made the adjustments) the symptoms ceased and have not had a problem since.
I've read a few times that the ethanol content in Sunoco is not tolerated by rotaries. Why, I'm not sure, and whether or not that's accurate, again I don't know. I can't find any articles on it now to post, but if I come across one I'll be sure to put up a thread.
Strange, because these engines have been know for their ability to be extremely fuel flexible (diesel, jet fuel, low octane, hydrogen, kerosene, you name it).

Can't believe that although the gas prices are high, people still want to cheap out on the gas. Do you realize that no matter what gas prices are, you will still spend the extra 3-5$ to fill up your tank. I think I can afford the $520.00 extra per year.
I have tried the Sunoco 94 octane, did not notice any difference but maybe slightly less kilometers. Besides Esso is what I use and get 4 times more points with 91octane.
