Turbo Ignition Rant

And I don't care what you believe, that is what is great about a public forum, you can believe what you want about one test that you have done with these coils and I can believe what I want based on my actual ownership of a boosted Renny. As I have said, plenty of boosted Renesis guys have run these coils without issue and I am talking top mount larger turbo, Standard Greddy, upgraded Greddy, Pettit supercharged, you name it.
That said, if there is a better solution, then great, run it.

I have also seen multiple issues with the use of these coils and have always maintained they are no better (actually worse at startup) than the stock coils when the dwell is left unchanged .
On multiple occasions i've been remotely tuning turbo 8s with BHR coils that have had misfires once the boost has been raised . On each occasion BHR has replaced the coils and voila! ... the problem is gone .
I find it really hard to believe that there have been that many faulty coils around and think that there are other issues from the install that have contributed. Unfortunately , not seeing the cars in person makes it harder to figure out what is going on.
I run the same coils (D585) on my own setup and have run at over 16psi without any misfires at all with various plug types/gaps and including water injection.
So in short ... there is something going on here but I disagree with thewird that the coils are useless for high boost .

FWIW:
I run a heavy gauge wire from the battery earth to a point just under the coils . I also shortened all the earth wires right down and run them to that heavy gauge wire .
Maybe this has helped in my case

Hey guys, I can bring my 2010 R3 with 36k km's on it in to you for testing if you want, I live in Burlington, I wanted to come see you anyways for a couple dyno runs last August but never got around to it before putting it away for the winter.

Hmmm.... this thread may be solving a mystery for me. Check this story out I posted on my FB page;
Here is an e-mail I received this afternoon (I have no idea who this person is, who his girlfriend is, or any other info about an alleged order as he did not include it in his e-mail. I have done no editing, either. I took 2-1/2 days off for family time and stayed in contact as much as I could with people, and this is merely one e-mail among 60+ I received in that time.;
"Your company is a joke worst service I have ever had my gf ordered me the ignition kit for my rx8 payed for it and u ***** are ignoring her emails she better get her money back or the coil kit your choice or we are taking legal action thx have a nice day"
Here was my response 3 hours, 10 minutes later;
"Who are you, who is your GF, and what is she trying to contact me about?
With your attitude I am not very motivated to help but I will give it half a shot, anyway."
I guess he never heard what "BHR" stood for a few years back. LOL
I can add here that the e-mail originated from Canada.

I doubt that is what precipitated this...
Marco runs a well known shop and it is not his style to act in that manner.

LOL ya, Pretty sure he just doesn't like using your coils.. Especially for high boost application. Like he said.
Let's get those AEM coils and see some numbers!!! In the meantime I'll be eating popcorn on the sidelines too

Canada is a pretty big place Charles. We don't all know each other here "eh" :P
I can't speak for him, but I will throw out there that he has recommended I order parts from you, which I have many times. Pretty sure he has no qualms with BHR, just doesn't like tuning with those coils.. Also I get the impression this is the first time he's said it.
I know how old they are, but not sure if that makes any difference?

Sir Charles, first of all, I wanted to start by saying I love your products and your level of customer service....That being said I am willing to bet that that email you received was not from Marco or any of his counterparts.....^ (Canada is an extremely large Country....)
Marco is a stand up guy, does great work, is extremely knowledgeable and personable and I just don't believe that he would act in that manner.....Your products and brand have been discussed numerous times in the past and he has never spoken badly, just has stated he doesn't like tuning with those coils.....
Cheers,
Big Fella

I think Charles believes that anyone that criticises one of his products is part of a world wide conspiracy to bring him down ....

That may be true but I bet the guy who e-mailed me is in Marco's periphery. I am not holding Marco responsible nor did I think he sent it.
I am well aware there are several people here who think I am an idiot, for whatever reasons they have (there are a lot of half-stories circulating about), but my customer base grows every month and I really no longer care nor have much time to engage in epic battles of this nature.

The only reason your customer base grows is because there is no other bolt-on alternative and the stock coils blow monkey dick so people want an upgrade. I'm sure if someone came out with a bolt-on AEM kit, the trend would move over to the AEM's over time for what is recommended as the AEM coils are significantly better. We have cars on AEM coils running 30 PSI spraying 1,500 cc of water injection and they burn clean and make 600 rwhp where an RX-8 with BHR ignition struggles over 10 PSI on straight gas in the 300 rwhp range, and a better plug gap. Excuse me lol? That's a joke.

I disagree with that. Maybe I got lucky but I ran stock coils (eBay no less) up to 17psi with no misfires for the better part of a year. Plugs were BUR9EQ for leading and stock for trailing gapped to .030", NGK wires. With the BHRs I started having misfires over about 12psi and couldn't do anything to tune them out, which is why I went back to stock coils. Charles was always very helpful and has my respect. I do believe his coils work great in the right application. But it seems I would have to agree that high boost may not be the right application for them.

Ah gotcha. Fair enough Regarding longevity I came to the conclusion that replacing stock coils every couple of years was worth it vs the headache of trying to get another solution to perform as well without a bunch of mucking about. That said, I have pondered the AEM setup. I like what you did in the pic you posted.
