So let me see what is going on here:

Are you guys just doing a RX-8 club? If so I don't see anybody giving you any discounts or anything.
Even with the RX-7 club, and we are a club since some think not and we have discounts from Lordco and card and such, we have problems getting anything from Mazda.

You should scratch Mazda off of your list for any discount doesn't matter who says they can get it, cause they won't. All mazda cares is to sell cars and they don't give a f for any clubs.

There is quite a few people that always talk about Mazda giving discount, but either they disapper or nothing happens.

So if you want to do this right, first you have to sit down and figure out what you want, you don't make your decisions based on discounts. You have to figure out if you are going to be a non-profittable organization. They you have to look at the age of the RX-8 owners. The average age is somewhat higher than your regular import car since the car is high in 40s after all is done. So you have to think to yourself "can we atract these older owners?"

So instead of meeting up and dream about discounts that will be nonexistant, get a mailing list going or something, figure out who will be in this. RX-8s, RX-7, rotaries, or whatever. This is a big decision. Once you start with one of them, there is almost no going back after there is logos and stickers and such.

If you decide to go with the Rotary type club, then you have to make sure that other clubs, such as BC RX-7 Club are happy with the decision and are willing to go from the bcrx7 forum to a general rotary forum.

We go from there with the logo and stickers and what not and membership fees or whatever. Then after all is done, which will be months, we can start thinking about possible discounts and sponsorship.

One more thing to add for those that think this should be just a RX-8 club. First when bunch of us started the BC RX-7 club back in February 2001 we had probably like 4 people which most of knew each other before even owning RX-7s. It took over a year to get any major membership and you gotta consider that there are thousands of RX-7s around.

So with RX-8 which I doubt anywhere close to 1000 is around BC, it will probably take you same time to have any traffic and membership.

So it is a good choice for you guys to merge with the BC RX-7 club to a new club. This gives you guys the advantage of higher number of members which means cheaper fees and better chance of any discounts. On top of that the large amount of knowledge of rotaries and cars in general.

This can be done with a site through several sections having RX-7s, RX-8, and other rotaries. You have to remember what makes these cars unique is the rotary engine.

Sorry for the long post; but I thought it's probably a good time to point of number of things before anything major is decided.

I might be able to make it tommorow if I get off work early enough. Where abouts are you guys planning to meet at?

Cheers,
Omid

Which is the basis of meeting up and talking about what we plan to get from this.
Vince had previous dealings with Mazda with a protoge club, so it seems likely that once we get things figured out on how we want this to go, it is possible to approach them with similar thoughts as they had when they did this previously.

Personally what I wish to gain from this is a group of people who all feel the same pride and joy in these wonderful machines. Discounts at places are a bonus, but also the knowledge about engines and mods which I lack is also a benefit which I will gain from this in a more hands on type rather than written text and trial and error.

I know most of us know it will take time to get things set up, but it is also a matter of a starting point.

The one thing I want to avoid, would be member which give the club a bad rep, which will cause difficulties in the long run. Hopefully we can find enough that are willing to be responsible in this and doing as they say they are willing to do.

I would like to have monthly meets or drives etc as well as meeting up for a game of pool whenever people feel like. However I would like it that people are accountable for thier own actions and if we set up a meet, that people try to be on time when we set up a schedule so as to avoid complications or causing plans to fail. Not always gonna happen, but it is a nice thought.

I do know that if we can find out what we have available to us, as well as what resources we have, ie, if people have conections, or hookups etc, its a good place to start. Extra incentive for people to work together in keeping this going, and making it work.
I do believe, although I could be wrong, but if we have a solid group of people who approach a business dealing with aftermarket products, would most likely be willing to give a slight discount if they have a number of guaranteed customers and advertisement due to a Club frequenting thier place of business, I could be wrong, but it is also things which we can discuss to see what is possible and plausible, and which is not.
Maybe we will find some areas available due to different peoples connections that might open doors to new help, or new resources, we wont know until we talk it out, and see what is possible.

I personally like the idea of all rotary, because not all people who admire and respect these cars can afford the newer higher hp ones like the 8 or the FD.

Well, before my mind rambles on more, I will see whoever is up for showing up tomorrow. later

Sorry guys, I won't be able to make it either. I'll be working late and Delta is not exactly close for me.

I'll be at the 28th meet though.

I agree with bcrx7 though... the effort involved in starting up an entirely new club is extraordinary. In fact, for the core group of people, it would be a full time job (administration, organizing, meet w/ vendors, collecting $$$, maintaining maillist/websites, etc). Seeing as most of us have day jobs (or go to school), I think it would be impossible to get a sole RX-8 club off the ground anytime soon. Perhaps when the 2005/06's come around, there will be a larger community to compensate for that and we can revisit the idea. Oh, and dollar-wise, I'd rather be spending my money on mods than investing it into starting up a club with no ROI if you catch my drift.

With this in mind, I don't see any reason why we can't join the RX-7 club. They seem to be welcoming us with open arms. True, we won't be 8 specific, but that doesn't mean we can't remain unique. The 8 is very different car to any other, and we can still run 8 specific activities. We can still discuss the latest and greatest about this car (and even get input from other rotary owners)... but on the grand scheme of things, I think it would be cool to have a larger community of enthusiasts. I for one have a deep appreciation for the RX-7 even though I've never owned one... and being new to rotaries, I think it would be cool to know some "experienced experts".

On the note of discounts, I agree that would be one aspect we'd like to get out of a club. But reallistically, how much bargaining power do we have with the 8-10 members? I see more customers at Lordco at any given hour than we have in total 8 owners.

Anyway, that's my 2 cents, and probably what I would bring to the table if I could make it tonight.

Well, a few of us met up for this, and we have some ideas in our heads on logos, what we think will work best, I will work out some sketches of the logo ideas and we can figure out what works as well as a name to go with it, but we basically agree that we want people from all rotaries who are willing to be serious about this and work together on things such as installing new exhaust etc... representing to shows, mission, drives and such, so, if you are interested and this is what you would like in a Club for the Vancouver areas, great, let us know. If not, well, hope to see you out driving your car too
