Warranty is almost up...

OK, it's been 3 years of burning rubber and 9k-RPM driving, lots of fun I must say.

But now the warranty is almost up and I have to decide if it's worth getting the extended warranty. The option to get extended warranty is only available while the original warranty is still active.

The dealer tells me it's 2780+tax for a 4year/80k extension (7year/160K total).

I don't put all that many miles on the car so it's very possible that I won't hit the 160k before the 7 years. It'll be close, I have put on 50k in 3 years, but I suspect I'll be doing a bit more in the next 3 years.

So, is it worth it?

It may give you peace of mind knowing you're covered. Nearly $3K is a pretty hefty tag, but worth it if you run into some major mechanical problems.

It's like insurance, you hate to pay for it, but glad you did after your 8 decides to hump that sexy porche in front of you. =P I paid $2500 to extend mine to 100K miles. Hopefully I never have to use it, but I'm covered should my 8 become ill.

The next question to ask is....Will the warranty cover it? on paper. sure. but what about in practice?

if the warranty is up.... the next thing is TURBO.. not MORE warranty, i m afraid you got it all wrong =)

for almost 3k, i dont think its worth it, engine failure is rare, and if you drove your car hard and not have any problems, i think your engine is in very good shape.

I'm in the same boat as you are, I find the extended warranty a bit expensive and I only put about 4000 km's a year on my car. So I don't think I will purchase the warranty.

What makes this a better deal for me is the fact that I only have 50k used of my original warranty. That means I get an extra 110k where most people will only get an extra 80k for the same price.

But you're right about two things, it's a lot of money and if I go Turbo/SC the warranty is void anyhow. Not sure if Turbo/SC is right for me since this is my daily driver.

Just to be clear, you're talking about the "comprehensive" option, not just the "major component", right?

If that's the case, consider that in the next 4 years, it is almost guaranteed that SOMETHING will go wrong that is covered by this "comprehensive" warranty. For example, ignition coils, AC components, heater/AC control panel, power windows, etc. I would say that you can expect at least $500 worth of required repairs for these types of things in the next 4 years. Another benefit is roadside assistance, which you get for the duration of your warranty extension. Assuming this has value to you, it's worth another $500 or so (cost of auto club membership x 4 years.)

So taking the above into account, your cost for the "unexpected" is around $1780, or $445/year. I'm not sure if your consider that worthwhile, or even if I'd consider it worthwhile myself, but I wanted to provide a different perspective on this.

On the other hand, if $2780 is for the "major component" only, it does seem really expensive.

Wouldn't consider it even for a second, especially if you are the original owner and maintained it properly from day one.
