I am thinking of purchasing a RX8 from a dealer in Toronto, ON but the car is a US car.

What the difference between Canadian RX8 and US RX8?

I know the daytime running lights, Odometer but what else?

headlight washers and I think you can get automatic climate control. DSC might also not be available.

With the push of a button, the dash can be changed from a English to Metric display.

DSC- Dynamic Stability Control, it tries to keep the car going in the requested direction even when you do something stupid. I does this by applying the brakes. You will feel the car jerk when this feature turns on. It is available on all models except the most basic model of the car.

DRLs is the main thing really. Mine is from the states and I made my FOG lights my DRLs using the DIY instructions from this site.

News to me about the headlight washers, auto climate nope don't have that, DSC yes alnielsen is correct.

Much cheaper to buy from the states, but the dollar is way down so you need to work out the difference.

Since it is from the dealer make them do the DRLs for you.

Headlight washers are mandated for HID lights in Canada, as are daytime running lights.

My opinion is that in order to save a few bucks, when Mazda added the above, they deleted the tire pressure monitoring system.

Reaalllyy?? Haven't heard that one before. I will take your word for it. Personally I don't like the two bumps in the front bumper for them.

Like most regulations, it's a little confusing (actually a LOT confusing),


Canada vehicle equipment is regulated by Transport Canada (TC). TC mandates vehicles and equipment be sold in Canada that conforms to CMVSS standards. These standards are developed from one (or more) of: (a) it's own tested methods; (b) US DOT standards - called FMVSS; or, (c) other recognized standards.

From my research (I do not make my living as an international trade lawyer, but I have stayed in a Holiday Inn).

The applicable Canadian Law for lighting systems is described in CMVSS 108.1. This requires that HID headlamps conform to the ECE standards (United Nations Economic Commission for Europe). The applicable standards for bulbs are in ECE 98. The standard for assemblies are in ECE Regulation #48 which states (in part):

6.2.9. Other requirements
Dipped-beam headlamps with a light source having an objective luminous flux which exceeds 2,000 lumen shall only be installed in conjunction with the installation of headlamp cleaning device(s) according to Regulation No. 45. 8 In addition, with respect to vertical inclination, the provisions of paragraph 6.2.6.2.2. above shall not be applied.


Therefore, in Canada, headlight assemblies follow the same rules as are in effect in Europe.

That's why we have headlight washers (or wipers) on HID-equipped cars, and they don't (I'm not sure about 2009 and beyond) have to in the USA.

The Jetta is produced in Mexico under NAFTA. It meets US standards, and is considered a "Domestic Car". The Mazda6's are built in Flat Rock Michigan - again a Domestic. The Subaru Foresters I think are Japanese-built. I don't recall seeing one so, you'd have to ask Subaru....

The headlamp washers are not required to be fitted on an import from the USA (where they met the US specs).... However you will have to add Daytime Running Lights before it will pass import from Customs - most folks just go to Canadian Tire; they'll add the DRL and do the inspection at the same time.

Personally, I'd rather have Tire Pressure monitoring.

I've not read anything definitive about taking US cars for warranty service though. You may want to search around teh interwebs - or better yet ask your local dealer directly.

Dude if you are that worried then just go Canadian. Really the only thing you should be worried about is the condition the car/engine is in. Read up on some post on here about buying a used RX-8. Old woman driving it before = bad engine, someone driving it the way it is suppose to be driving (redline almost every day) = good to go!

There really isn't much of a difference by the sounds of it if you ask me.

Mazda backs their warranty in Canada if the car was bought in the states (if there is still some left).

DRLs...do the Fog light DIY. Cost $.30 and 10min. Saved me over $250 at the dealer and over $200 at CT. That's of course if the dealership won't do it for you for free.

From a dealer point of view and resale I hope you save thousands on a US car. I recently had someone trade in a US Mazda 6 and it was worth about $7000.00 less than a Canadian one. I couldnt find a dealer who would pay any money for it. The reason is we cant verify and history, liens accident with the same type of accuracy as an Ontario registered car when it was new. The rest of Canada is tough for us, the US cars are almost impossible.

Well I picked my 8 up last year in January, SS GT with the Full Aero Kit, dropped on the road for 17K, with less than 30 KM (not miles). So big difference in price.

Thumper, the mod you did, is it, where u can independtly turn on the fogs with the headlights not on, or they turn on as soon as u start the car?

They are so much cheaper down there. When I bought mine, found the exact same colour year etc...up here with only 10-15k km less than the one I bought and it was $9k more, before taxes etc. Crazy!!

Yes and yes You can turn them on or off independently of the headlights and also just leave them on, so when the car starts they come on and go off when the car turns off. I just leave them on all the time so never have to worry about being pulled over for no drls.

I too live in Markham. I want to come to this 'rewiring' meet. Wiring and me to do not mix. I've rewired my seadoo trailer twice and still can't get all the lights to work properly.
