What else is new...

So last spring i was having transmission issues, couldn't get into reverse gear, weird noises, grinding, crunching etc. Turned out to be something small, just a brace had snapped, anyways repaired 1200$ bill with a new clutch. Towards the end of the season, my second gear started acting up. Now im dealing with a garbage second gear that grinds when i shift above 5k and downshift above 5k. Also some weird winding noises sometimes kind of chatter. Car has 63 k im looking at just getting rid of the transmission and buying a used one. Found one for 400$ owner says it was in a wreck, but previous to pulling it off the car he drove it said it was in awesome shape has around 50k miles on it. So im going to purchase that and get rid of this one try and sell it for parts if anybody is interested PM me. Only needs a second gear synchro. Aside from that, i was curious about transmission swap prices. Does anybody have any places they suggest in the gta that isnt really expensive? I have my cousin who is willing to do it in his garage but im just curious as to what id be looking at for a shop to do this.

Thanks alot!

Contact my buddy Dave at Dave's Garage.
www.daves-garage.ca

He's in Oakville. I drive from Whitby to Oakville to have him do all the work on my car. He's good, reliable and his prices are very reasonable.

If your looking for a reputable shop. How about you try a shop that isn't a no-name and has been in the rotary business for years like Mazdee's? They can probably actually fix your transmission if its just the syncro. Though I'd be interested (free) in your transmission if you end up swapping it

Dave's Garage isn't no name, the name is Dave's Garage.
Seriously though, he's not looking to have his engine torn down and re-built, he's looking at having his tranny repaired or replaced so there is no need to bring it to a rotary specialist.
Take the car wherever you like but Dave is very well known in the Miata community (which is what he specializes on) as being very good at what he does and doing it for a reasonable price.

Not discreting Dave's Garage in any way but when I have someone work on my car, I'd rather have someone who has their hands on that particular car day in and day out instead of having to look at a manual. Walk into Mazdee's any day of the week and their are always RX-7's and RX-8's on the hoists. There is a reason for that, what goes into the shop, leaves the shop completely without worry.

I don't even have other shops do work on my own cars anymore, in fact I could have the transmission swapped for the OP as I have a shop I have access too. Just because he's good with Miata's, doesn't mean he's good with every Mazda. Example, it's a well known fact dealers can't diagnose and repair rotaries for **** and these are trained technicians with complete FSM's and diagnostic equipment.

Granted, it is a simple job. But why take a risk with an unknown instead of supporting the shops that take care of our cars properly throughout.

Just my 2 cents worth of seeing negligence by other shops constantly with my tuning customers. Everyone takes it to their buddy's mechanic that does amazing work and then I have to waste my time in the summer fixing cars instead of tuning them. I'm the only rotary tuner in the GTA, ask to tune a piston engine and I'll tell you to go find someone else. While I could probably make a piston run good, it wouldn't run at its optimum because that is not what I work on.

site note - I'm just tired of seeing garbage work done my "expert mechanics" so this post might be more of a rant then anything

My only problem with Mazdees is Dave.
The guy openly despises the RX8, thinks they're **** cars and I didn't find him very friendly when I met him.
He didn't seem at all interested in my business when I mentioned I drive an RX8 and live locally to his shop, all he said when I told him I drive an 8 is that he thinks they're crap.

I'm not the greatest fan of the RX-8 either, neither is any old generation rotary owner. Most RX-8 owners have gotten used to that fact and joke about it instead of getting upset over it. You don't see the BRZ/FRS owners getting all upset when the RX-8 owners hate on their cars.

Dave's a unique personality, he'll tell you straight what he's thinking instead of throwing a bunch of bullshit to get your business. Once you get passed that, you realize he's actually a good guy.

Let's be honest. By "old generation rotary owner", you mean FD owner.

I wouldn't say that :P but I suspect the RX-8 will become more popular as a modders platform due to passing emissions via OBD2 instead of an actual exhaust test.

Dave @ Mazdees has his own personality. He talks rough and always sound **** or something, but that's Dave. He is a good guy, nothing shady there, and the most importantly, he knows rotaries.....

Yep! more a RX-7 shop. Dave, the couple of times I've talked to him is a "no bullshit kind of guy" Most ppl's take him the wrong way but he knows his stuff but if you just want to talk forget it, it's all business if you don't like it too bad.

OP, just find a good tranny shop. A tranny is a tranny does not matter kind of engine it's attached to, as long as they put it back the same way it came out.

Swap maybe $400 same as I was quoted for a new clutch installed. Personally I would not do it in my garage without a lift and tranny/motor jacks, just a real pain in the *** to get the car high enough off the ground for the drop & swap. IMHO
But each to their own.

what bad things have you heard from street power, just curious. I know he's done some work on some high powered rx7's.

I think I've heard pretty much everything from that dreaded shop over the years. From over-priced work which was done to substandard quality, getting charged for work/parts and then receiving something else or used, to as low parts being stolen/removed (even complete engines; this has happened more then once). Not to mention the countless engine failures and he holds no responsibility for anything. I know people that had spent upwards of $10,000 there and still didn't have a running car. I have pictures of his disgusting port work that he charges premium for and calls "race porting", its like a child with a die grinder.

I have never heard one good thing come from that shop with the exception of getting your car tuned by Steve Kan. Steve Kan tuned is not StreetPower tuned as he does not work there and is merely making a tuning trip. The one good thing he's good at is taking your money, at that he is expert quality. He will tell you what you want to hear and throw some big HP numbers at you and you will hand your hard earned money over to later not get anywhere near that and that is if you have a running car at all with the parts you paid for.
