Question What would you pay for a buyback RX-8?

So in my quest for an RX-8 one of the dealerships near me has a Red GT 6spd w/ moonroof on their lot that they recently received from a customer who took the buyback, it has 8100 kms on it.

They don't have a price on it yet as they're waiting to hear back from Mazda Canada on what to set the price at. This is exactly the car I'm looking for, color and everything, and I have an opportunity to get it or wait for mine to arrive in Feb/Mar.

I'm wondering what you guys think would be a fair price for it? I have no idea what mazda will come back with on the cost but I'm sure it won't be discounted too much. The thing I'm worried about is it's almost a certainty that the previous owner drove the crap out of it before bringing it back which has me worried. Maybe I should ask them to throw in a extended warranty?

Any opinions?

Oh and if anyone in the Edmonton area is interested, Sundance Mazda has a Silver GT 6spd with moonroof on the showroom floor that isn't spoken for.

I'm thinking the same thing. Whats a buyback worth?

I think this would be a good way to calculate and you can all tell me I'm nuts if you think my reasoning is totally wacko.

I would depreciate the vehicle at 45 cents a km for anything between 0 and 10,000 km. Then 25 cents per km for anything over that.

Then subtract the Freight and PDE ( Manitoba its $925.00 ) That's what Mazda needs to swallow, afterall it's their mistake.

So a GT with a slider has a MSRP of 40,595
subtract 45 cents x 8100km which is 3,645
then subtract the Freight & PDE 925

tadaaaa the balance is 36,025

I got the 45 cents from transport canada, who pays their employees that rate while travelling on business in their private vehicle.

Maybe I'm nuts, maybe I'm not.

My guess is Mazda will have a tough time selling these cars with snow on the ground and 0 mileage 8's already in stock.

Again, I wonder. What happened to all this "Only mazda employees can buy the buybacks"

Are you a mazda employee? I suspect someone will be driving my rx8 in the near future.

Did they get more cars back than anticipated?

The dealership I went to had 2 buybacks on the lot and they never metioned anything about them being offered to mazda employees. They said they were waiting for mazda canada to tell them what the should sell them for, it'll be interesting to see what they decide anyway.

Maybe that only applies in the US! Mazda Canada probably doesn't have enough employees to buy even the limited number of Canadian buy-back cars...

I have heard that mazda only had about 25 buybacks in total. I personaly have a buyback in the works that is not going very well.... what mazda promised and what they are doing are two totally different things.

Hi Guys:

Thought I would add my 2 cents worth. We returned ours last Friday and the dealer told me that it was going back to Mazda Canada to be wholesaled in a dealer auction (in case you see it ours was tit/6spd/roof/6,000k with small scrape on right front corner). I assume the winning dealer will sell it on their used car lot, presumably for whatever mark-up they can get. He told me specifically that they are not going to Mazda employees.

PS - we picked up our G35 coupe and really don't like it as much as the RX8. I really did love that car!!!!! On a positive note however we just got 9.1L/100km on the first tankful in the G35 compared to 17.1L/100km on the last tankful we put in the RX8 and that certainly helps ease our grief.

Well Mazda got back to me with a price, they said they were selling it at $2000 off msrp. I basically laughed at this, I might consider it at $5000 off.....and maybe an extended warranty thrown in.

if i was ~$5000 short on making a new RX-8 (which i'm not... even close), i'd eat up one of the buy-backs. of course, you'd wanna check it out, maybe talk to the guy who'd returned it, but yeah man, good friggin' deal: it's like a super-short term lease return ON A BRAND FREAKIN' NEW CAR. maybe i'm seeing this in a different light, as my family's only ever bought 1 new car ever, but i personally wouldn't feel any sort of hesitation about the kms put on the RX-8's... just make the dealer swallow hard .

Jag, I drove by Weber Motors today. They have a beautiful yellow 8 GT (brand new). What you think?

Cool JagMan.....

And don't think that Mazda said "sell it for $2000 off"......

Mazda told the dealer how much THEY want, and the dealer then put his own profit in there......don't be misled, the dealer will pocket AT LEAST 10% for himself. There IS room to deal, but probably not a lot of time.

Nice meeting you today, and good luck with the 'quest'!

That blows for a used car! I ordered mine and right off the bat, I got $1000 off MSRP on a brand new Rx-8. Just gotta find the right dealer I guess.

Heard back from the dealer again today, the best the could do was $3000 off. So I decided to wait till spring for mine to arrive, just the peace of mind of having a brand new car is worth it to me. I had first dibs on it while we worked on the price but now that I've passed on it its up for grabs if anyone is interested.

TiRX8, don't think I could do yellow, its just too bright for me. But on the other hand it'll probably be much more rare than the red one I ordered.

Atleast with a red one you have one of the nicest interiors of any car on the market. ENJOY

The yellow one was to be Dean's car. During prep. the moron car jockey put the front fender into a concrete piller when moving it. Dean said no way, as they wouldn't drop the price. Few weeks later they offered to another friend of mine for quite a bit off (don't remember how much exactly). Dean was really pissed! Weber Motors - what a bunch of ****!

Yellow isn't so bad, BTW. Have a look at my avitar. Just attracts a little too much attention from the constabulary ;-). You should offer them $5000 below list. It's got Nav. too (though the Canadian maps are not there, I'm told).

Canadian maps are there, but just the important bits. That's why there's no Edmonton coverage.

:D

Seriously, the Navtech CD includes Vancouver, Calgary/Banff, Toronto/Ottawa/Montreal areas. The next update does include Edmonton.

How do you know Edmonton is in a future update Gord? I sent Navtech an email about 2 weeks ago to find out and I never heard back from them. Do you have Nav on your car, and if so how's the coverage in Calagary? Is it worth getting if it'll have my area on the map soon?

I think the nav is totally useless in Canada. There isn't a city that you cannot navigate without a paper map in this great white country of ours.

You people are wasting your money..

Actually the one at Weber is a new one.
The one they crashed was shipped off to another dealer in Calgary.
I talked with a couple of people there and apparently it was felt that selling it in Edmonton, when so many people knew it had been crashed and repaired, was probably a bad idea.
As for "*****" perhaps, but so far in my experinces with the local dealers , Weber seems to be the best bet in terms of mechanics and parts staff.
I bought mine from Jarman, and I would not go back there for free steaks and beer. Clueless only begins to describe them.

There ARE 3 returns available in Edmonton so far from what I have heard.
