Mr. B showed me his Ford Expedition, gets better MPG than our cars.

 

Just wondering what kind of mpg do you guys get now? I'm usually at about 13.0L/100km...which is approx 340km when the orange dot comes on.

 

I get 300 and the light comes on. Though my driving style is probably a lot different than you...

BTW, tomorrow is my 2 year anniversary with Natalia... and yesterday I hit 50,000 km.

 

In the Last few months 320-340 use to get up to 380.

 

Has anyone tried the Michelin Pilot Alpin PA3s? I'm thinking of picking up 4 for my first winter driving in my new 8. (215/55/R17)

 

I already have my snows on!! Well ... on the beater anyway. I will drive my 8 for a couple more weeks, then away it goes. As my birthday is this month, I will not bother with the license sticker 'til next spring. Until then ... driving a 2002 Sunfire ... dreaming of warmer days!

 

I am at a dilemma. I have been offered a 93 Corolla auto, for FREE to keep...
I could use that,with all seasons, but I really miss driving the 8, and the thought of driving a corolla is completely ANTI-Footman doctrine!

 

Go for it footy, save the 8. If I can drive my wife old Vibe for the winter you can drive a Corolla. Just think all the money you'll save on gas. That's how I justify paying for storage..... look at all the gas/insurance money I'm saving!

 

The weather can't seem to make up its mind.
They say it was going to get a bit warmer before the end of the month. Now it looks like we won't have any days above 13C.

Looks like I'll be going through with my plan on installing the winter tires this weekend. Better to be safe than sorry. This way I don't have to spend time changing them in the freezin weather!

As for the winter beater, if you've got access to a free car for winter, I would take it to save the RX8. Canadian winters are the worst for cars! You can protect it from here to kingdom come, but it'll never be the same as a car that never sees winter weather.

Not to mention the fuel cost you'll be saving. The 8 eats fuel as it is. In the winter it's even worse!

 

Lol ... Footman ... you in a Corolla! Karma's a bitch! But I wouldn't pass up 'FREE to keep,' ... so I say go for it! Just don't start drivin' like those guys.

You forgot to mention winter wipers! Last year my wipers got so bad they were wiping ice onto the windshield and i had to stop at random lots to rip the ice off.

As for the MPG thing, i only get 300kms when it hits the dot or maybe like 330 if ive been highwaying it, but i fill up every 4-5 days. Man this car is running me broke!

A free car of any sort is good in my books, besides if you dont drive it you can take the insurance off it and sell it to some up and comming corolla driver. lol

Re: washing the car often in the winter... my family's been following a different philosophy and it's worked out pretty well over the last 10 years or so. The automatic carwashes do 2 things that aren't great: force water into cracks and spaces where it normally wouldn't go and scrub off wax and any protection you had. However, we also park outside, no garage, to avoid liquid water and freeze/thaw cycles, which can be killer on a car body. The idea is you can't avoid the salt, it's going to be everywhere regardless, so avoid the things that actually cause corrosion: salt water and heat. So we never wash the cars while it's cold, but wash it intensely as soon as it starts warming up about 0 consistently.

So far we had a 2001 Accord with about 240,000km, 2003 Eclipse with just under 200,000 and my recently retired 1999 Paseo. Mom's Eclipse hasn't even been re-rustproofed since the factory.... the dealer thought it was a Florida car looking at the underside.

So.. yeah.. my 2 cents on that. Avoid parking in a garage, especially a heated one if possible. If you have to, keep just at -2 to 0C, any fresh snow will sublimate off rather than forming liquid water/salt solution...

Loki.. I agree, the car washes I refer to are hand washes done by self when it's just above 0 outside...

 

When snow/ice appears to be forcasted. Often you can get away with it until sometime in December. Sometimes you can get away with it very late, sometimes we get a lousy year like last year where it's freaky early.

I've been running summer tires for the past week. Oh man... the weather (temperature wise) does not look good for the coming week. Is this it guys? seriously, there is no fall? I really hope it doesn't just stay around here and then just continue to drop lower when Dec comes. I hope this is just one of those freak periods, and we'll get back to normal temperatures like 10 - 14.

Every morning, it's 0 - 5C, and it's making the drive to work very dangerous once it starts to rain.

Last year, I put winters on Nov... there's 2 more weeks to go, and I don't know if I'll last that long.
