Cars with LSD differential can be a pain to drive on snow compared to open diff. It is harder to get stuck with a LSD, but the rear end dances around a lot more while it struggles for traction.

Well I have a different opinion of an open vs limted slip diff in the winter. With an open diff you usually dont have to worry about sliding because you normally cant even get moving on ice or any slippery surface if you are trying to move up an incline. Most ltd slips are very predictable and with a little bit of throttle control quite drivable. Both my trucks have ltd slip and with the snow tires we rarely if ever use 4wd other than to do giant 4wd slides lol.

That's the thing nowadays.
People get so nervous about the car slightly moving sideways, they automatically think the car is no good.
When in fact, it's trying to get you going unlike with an open diff.
We've all seen BMW's get stuck in the snow.. despite all their fancy electronic gadgets...

Limited Slip Diff FTW!!!

I love LSDs, I slide everywhere in the winter, and purposely drive around with DSC off in the snow.

I've found that it's easier to just turn off traction control and let the LSD does it's job on those slow snowy drives. But that depends of the kind of tread patterns on your snow tires I guess. With my tires I need to give the gas a quick stab to get the tires to dig through the snow.

I used to leave TC on and it was more difficult to get going. Now I just let the rear-end dance around and let the LSD figure it out.

The understeery tuning of the car does make it much more relaxing to drive in the winter.

I love the DSC though. At high speed it detects oversteering and tuck the car back in before you have a chance to say oh sh-t. It makes the RX-8 a great winter sports car.

Yeah, I've got a soft spot for the RX-8 - a love hate relationship, like the crazy girl you once knew and hated, but the sex was great.
