XM vs Sirius

I installed the XM Delphi Roady XT from Future shop for my 8 and I must say the music selection from the stations suck pretty bad. Does anyone else like/dislike XM?

Is Sirius any better?

I use Sirius and have been really really happy with it. The only thing I don't like about sirius is that they like to change the channel line-ups at least twice a year, which can get annoying. Especially if you like talkshows and you turn it on one day and they are gone. Sirius dosen't mess with the music channels as bad.

No experience with XM...but from what I hear from other people, Sirius is better. But those could just be the Howard Stern fans. Personally I can't stand the man.

Maybe it's because I live in the New York Metro area, or I just dont spend enough time in my car, but I don't "get" satellite radio- I just dont see the value in it.

For my money, I would rather invest in something like a Phatbox.

yea if you live in a downtown neighbourhood.. or a place with lots of "obstacles" around its kind of pointless of having the sat radio.. the puny reciever they give with the car kit suxx.. sat radio for the car really is for those in rural areas where all you get are country stations!! lol...

ive been thinking, if i purchase the home kit with its much bigger reciever ..and stick it on the rear deck.. would it make a difference in reception strength??hmmm..

I agree totally. I almost got sucked into sat radio. Then the ipods came out, and now with my new head unit (Alpine with full speed connection), I can load up my nano with 800 songs, and plug right in to my system.

Commercial free music, when I want it, and it doesnt cost me a monthly fee.

I have Sirrus on my sat tv. It is free, and I dont even listen to it.
Again, I connect my nano to my home stereo.
Commercial free music at home with no monthly fee.

Ipods will kill sat radio.

I bought the XM SAT kit because it offers the home stereo connection. My intent was to purchase this for my business. Then I could play the music commercial free with the type of music I like. It is also convenient for me to take the receiver out and plug it into my dash on my 8. This way, I can leave work and still enjoy the sat radio in my car. This makes it all worth it for me. The monthly cost on the other hand is cheap about the price of a CD per month. I don’t want to sell this because my WHOLE purpose for starting this thread was XM vs Sirius. Which one is better?

I think the XM does not play enough songs that I like. The music seams to be out dated to me.

If anyone has Sirius, do you like the music selection?

Thanks

I have had XM for about a year and a half. I cannot listen to terrestrial radio now. I have become spoiled from commercial free radio. As for music selection, the two services (XM & Sirius) have similar channel lineups, and there is a genre for almost everybody.

I got XM solely for the return of Opie & Anthony, but I have found a lot of excellent programming other than just the talk & music stations. XM is home to Major League Baseball, NHL Hockey, and this summer FIFA Worldcup, so although at first it sounds like 12$ a month to listen to music, but there is lots of value depending on what you like.

Sirius does not have a portable unit that can receive live content, meanwhile XM is on their second generation (Pioneer Inno).

Anyway, I don't work for XM, nor am I affiliated with them, its justs my 2 cents.

Cheers,

BB8

It's great for those people who travel a lot, like myself, and who like to listen to other programs other than music. While the music is good it's nice to listen to some of the talk shows as well.

"Sirius does not have a portable unit that can receive live content, meanwhile XM is on their second generation (Pioneer Inno)."

Don't know if i agree with this.. Sirius broadcasts live content consistently on many channels that aren't playbacks..

I brought Siruis so i could llisten to Howard Stern uncensored. I was pleasently surpised to find other channels i enjoy listening to like Alt nation and the classic the alternative rock station.

I agree with the post above that once you go to sattellite you'll find hard to go back to terrestial radio with all those never ending commercials

A friend of mine has both but prefered Siruis because the reception is better partially due to the fact their satellite orbits at higher altitudes.

In either case it the only drawback is when i pull into a parking garage, drive under a huge tree, or drive into a tunnel i lose reception completely... can get kind of annoying

Other then that i'm glad i made the purchase

I've been on Sirius for about 2 months now. I am usually a technology early-adopter, but the whole why-pay-for-something-free mentality kept me from going with sat radio. However now that I have been on it, I have found that I totally missed the biggest reason to go satellite: there is so much more variety that I could never get in my local market. I live in Detroit and have 3 rock stations and one "new rock" station
(actually a Canadian station) over the air to choose from. On Sirius I get 10x as many to choose from. The commercial-free is just a bonus.

I like to compare it to cable TV vs. broadcast TV. A vast majority of people in the US subscribe to cable TV, even though they can get 6-8 stations over the air. Why? More variety, access to things you cannot get locally, even in a big city.

I'll leave the Sirius vs. XM discussion for people who have more experience with both than I.

Disclaimer: I DO work for Sirius, though this email is entirely my personal opinion/experience with the service.

If you live in the big city usually this isn't a problem. Sirius has repeater towers set up in most major cities I believe. When I'm in Cleveland I can be in the basement of a 10 level parking garage and still get sirius.

I have XM and while I do enjoy listening to the commercial free radio, I tend to agree that the stations I listen to love to repeat the same music over and over and over. For example. I like dance music, and I thought if I bought sat radio BPM would play all sorts of dance hits.. well they basically have a top 30 and they play it randomly.. then they have the top 30 countdown, then they go back to randomly playing the top 30 songs, then they have live to air from some club that plays the same songs.. its annoying. Same with some of the rock stations, I hear the same songs over and over and over. I flip stations like crazy until I find something new. I still listen to sat radio quite a bit more than regular radio now.. I cant stand the commercials and when I seem to flip back, there is always commericals.. but overall i'm more happy with sat radio than displeased with it. I just wish they didn't repeat the same songs 300 times a day.
