About to Order - Some advice please

Just wanted to say hello to you all as new on here.
I am about to take the plunge and order my RX8, the sad part is that I have ordered my plate before the car (DVLA have opened up the 04 plates), so my reg will be AP04 RXB
I am interested in those that have got their cars on what their thoughts of the extras are, so my order is,

S/Roof - Checking tomorrow as I am 6'2"
Leather/Sat Nav - couldn't resist
Trakstar - says £1k in manual, but dealership have said they will do it for £570 :-)
Illuminating Gear Stick - Anyone got this?
Sports Exhaust - Is there a difference apart from finish?
Key - got to get the flash key

Also tempted to get the Mazdaspeed body kit, hence why I have nothing external on my list, what is the opinion on this? Only thing stopping me is the cost, £5295! If I import the parts from Japan it will cost under £3k including VAT and shipping, then just to put it on

Last thing, are you planning some meets? I currently have a S2000, and the S2000 club used to do a big meet once a year and lots of more local ones. Would be nice to meet some of you,

Anthony

PS If anyone knows someone who wants to buy an S2000 here is the link
http://forums.s2ki.com/forums/showth...50#post2487450
I apologise if that was not allowed.

Hi Doogy,

Thanks for the link, the reason why I changed, a good question.

The car is 2.5 years old so wanted to change, so opened my options list which were split into,

Z4 - Love the styling but common as muck
350Z - Really tempted by this, drove really well but was not keen on the chunkiness and the bland interior
S2000 - Buy another one, loved the car so much best thing I ever did was buy this car
Boxster - S2000 was quicker and less common
RX8 - Love the smoothness of the engine, and the complete design is fantastic. Makes me feel the way I did the first time I saw the S2000. Shame it is not as quick, but I am sure Mazdaspeed will have something soon :p

The Mazdaspeed bodykit is low ... my usual drives would trash it.

Sunroof with 6' 2" will be a problem if you're long in the body.

Hi Kev

Agree with you on how low it is. My dealer has one at the moment, biggest problem I have seen is the number of speed bumps we have here in the UK

Still think I am going to go for it

I would get rid of the sunroof ... I'm 5' 11" and it was tight

Forget the Mazdaspeed kit .. spoils the looks and adds weight to the car

Forget the sports exhaust ... the only difference is the sound

Get the strakes .. they make the car

Don`t bother with anything external except the rotary crest, the car simply does not need further embelishment.
Spend your money on leather internal bits ie, gear ****, handbrake lever, centre console lids. These are the parts which actually make the car; I would also recommend the B pillar trim.

I'd agree with dropping the moonroof. I'm 6" and found it a bit close for comfort with the moonroof.

Sports exhaust - jury's still out but it appears that there is no performance benefit.

Flashy key - biggest disappointment according to the one person I know of who bought it - it was falling apart already and was nowhere near worth the spend.

Illuminated gearstick - check out www.rx8ownersclub.co.uk for pics of it. Those who have it are pleased with the effect.

I couldnt find any accessories worth buying. Toyed with the idea of an ally fuel cap but I dont think the car needs any more external bits to look spectacular. And I'm not convinced by any internal bits either, would they really add value, and you wont notice them at all while you are enjoying the beautiful driving experience the car gives.

Jon H I came to the same conclusion.

I dont like the add on bits of plastic, as they dont blend in well in to the body work, leaving a very obvious ridge. The mud guards seem the most subtle and useful, but I'll see how dirty the car gets first. I haven't see anyone in the UK with a front airdam yet, the body colour looks slighly better than the black lip, but I dont like the obvious join to the bottom of the bumper as it detracts up the strong jutting lines under the oil radiator grill.

Has anyone gone for the B pillar trim? Apart from the logo, it looks shiner and would match the black surround behind the glass of the rear door.

As for the interior, I'd like the illumintaed gear ****, but £99 is a lot for just a bulb, as we already get it leather covered (unlike the J-spec cloth I saw). The piano black ash tray lid should extend the great finish of the centre console down further, so that might be worth doing.

I wouldn't want any more red on the gear lever, hand break or tray lids, as I think the red & black interior has just the right balamce anyway. The door sills are ok, but you only ever see them for a few seconds.

As for the fuel cap, on the silver yes, any other colour no. It breaks up the lines too much being between the arch and rear pillar, and more obvious than the TT which is almost horizontal on the arch and not ovious from the side.

Druck,
I came to the same conclusion as far as the join on the exterior parts, hence why I am looking at the Mazdaspeed kit as it keeps the lines of the car IMO, just a little more agressively :D

Apparently, according to a post on the UK owners forum, with the Mazdaspeed kit, 'you can't have the front fog lights nor the washers for the Xenons (illegal?). They just don't fit.'

It is illegal for a new car to be supplied with Xenon headlights but without headlight washers.

I have no idea what the position is on aftermarket modification. A comparative example is that is illegal for a vehicle to be supplied with bull-bars on the front, but not illegal to have them fitted after delivery. May be the same regarding Xenons.

The only external accessory I got was polished strakes, and they look fab.

I got the B pillar trim and can not imagine the car without it, mine is black which sets the trim off really well.
Can`t really understand you guys reluctance to buy accessories tho` they really are not that expensive, particularly when you evaluate what you get as standard kit.
I personally can`t understand anyone not buying all the internal leather bits. The car is total quality, why compromise it for a few hundred pounds?

Ok, I have completed my order. So the final decision was,

Velocity Red
Red/Black Leather
Sat Nav
Trakstar
Lux Mats
Illuminating Gear Stick
Sports Exhaust
Polished Fins
Polished Crest

All that is left is to decide about the Mazdaspeed kit. When i went to order they had a Silver with the kit on, looked fantastic!
Just got to wait till march now

Well done Anthony and congratulations on your decision.

Looks like someone else will also be getting an excellent S2K.

Cheers

Nice on Anthony. Illuminated gear stick really cool (and warm) and sports exhaust does add larger bore and better sound. I would also add piano black pillor which look superb on the car and the piano black ashtray cover, really adds luxury. Also the mud flaps looks great.

But the car is already so well equiped and so stylishly designed inside and out I didn't think it needed anything else added to it.

And anyway, the car is such good value I feel I have got myself a good deal, even paying full list price. I don't want to compromise that good feeling by adding a lot of pricy extras to the bill.

Chris - then you are missing out. Some of the add-ons are of superior quality (ie leather or piano black trim instead of plastic). You are right in that the car is very well equiped for the price but therefore spending a few extra £ on some additional quaility seems good value to me.
