Bose...wow..!!
One of the things that attracted me to the RX8 was the pre 2003 hype about the levels of standard kit (especially the Bose system.) I have a standard bose system in my current car which everyone who hears it describes as 'amazing'. I have scaned every article and thread from owners in Australia/USA and not one person describes it as any better that 'pretty good'...am I being too synical or is this 'bose' system the real thing..?

I had a 1200 watt system in my older car, consisting of two Polk Audio 12" subs, front and rear Infiniti Kappa 6.5" components and two Rockford Fosgate 600w amps powering them... and the clarity on that is matched by the Bose, but not the volume nor the bass (there isn't a sub in the RX-8).
I leave my settings on the Bose in the RX-8 completely flat, as that is the way the music is recorded, and I've been plenty happy with its reproduction though the audiopilot is probably going to get turned off soon to see how I like the sound with it off, though it hasn't bothered me as of yet.

With my settings on +6 treble and +6 bass, I am happy. The midrange levels are waaaaaaaaaay too high for most of the music I listen to. Rock, indy rock, punk, and dance. If I listen to classical, the mid is still makes my eyes hurt.
There is ample power for annoying the car next to you.

Personally I was suprised that there is no Sub included as part of the standard BOSE.
My father-in-law has a 2003 Mazda 6 TS2 and that has a BOSE system, which includes a Sub in the boot (the speaker is sat in the recess in the space saver spare wheel)

It doesn't actually NEED a sub, although it would be nice. You still get a surprisingly wide audible range from the system. I play a lot of music that tests the boundaries of normal systems (ie Tipper - Surrounded) and you can really hear the BOSE's weak and stong points with that kind of music. That album (Tipper - Surrounded) is currently the best album I can find that was created in 5.1 from the ground up. It really is an awesome incidator of a system's quality. Go pick it up and see for yourself -- if you don't mind experimental electronica.
