Oilman, nice one. Congrats. Visited my dealer yesterday and saw a red one for the first time. Looked very nice but wasn't allowed to touch as it was a customers.

Well done.

Was that Edwards Mazda in Kempsy? If so that was my baby, and I collected her today, despites howls of protest from the salesman, saying he'd never had so many people through the door with my car there.

Here she is plated up and ready to go.

Notice my poor old MX3 having to sit all night at the dealers until I can collect bring it back tomorrow, to sell on to a friend.

Just 4 miles on the clock.

I went up to Derby tonight to visit the aforemented friend, put another 240 joy drenched miles and still about 1/6 of a tank left. I'm afaid any notion of keeping the revs down until after the break in when out of the window, time and time again, we just couldn't resist that sound.

Did take it easy on the way back as it was foggy, put some Coldplay CDs in, and I'm afraid there was a lot of tuneless singing. I mellowed out in to such a state of eurphoria, I'd probably have failed a drug test despite never smoking anything dodgy or not.

Better get some sleep now, so I'm up tomorrow in time to drive in daylight.

Cheers

Dave the red car at the dealers was at Brooklyn (Redditch). They had two silvers and one red (all customer cars). Their demo is Tit grey (Hi power).

Just went back to the dealers and drove my old MX3 V6 back home, then took the RX8 out over the same roads to compare. Despite 5 years of ownership of the MX3 and one day with the RX8, I had to adjust back to the old car, as it felt far less natural.

Yesterday I did 240 miles on motorways and dual carridgeways, revelled in the power, so brutal in 3rd at 90, so quiet and refined at 6th at the same speed. Much less wind and tire noise for the journey up the motorway to work every day.

But today it was the turn of the twisties and the nasties, and what a revelation the ride and handling is. I thought the MX3 was good, but it often feels hairy when pressing it through the twisties with the abmisal condition of the roads round here. The RX8 will go round far faster than I'll willing to push it so soon after parting with 24 grand, doesn't get phased by the bumps at all.

I could almost swear this car doesn't have wheels. Even over speed bumps, you dont get the budoom budoom as each pair goes over. The car just gently tilts up then back down again twice. I need someone to tell me if the wheels are still touching the ground, or whether its using hovercraft technology for negotialting traffic calming!

Even in jams round town its a cut above. The electric assised steering just whips round and you can slide in and out of gaps with ease. In the MX3 1st gear is just lauch control only used to blast from zero up to the red line, uncontrollable otherwise requiring slipping in to second as soon as you are moving round town. 1st on the RX8 is actually a usuable gear for trickling along, its controllable, and the engine is not screeming above a few mph scaring the pedestrials (although a couple more rpm and it will do!).

The only thing I miss about the MX3 is putting the V6 in to 5th at walking pace and getting a nice deep note. At low RPM the rotary is always slighly higher pitched. But thats more than compensated for my the sound at the other end of the rev range. From peoples expressions it obviously sounds just as different from a piston engine outside the car as it does inside.

Finally I headed for the hills, which unfortunately were covered in cloud, and the roads slippery with leaves. I took it very gently through the narrow roads in the woods, as the last thing I want is a head on with someone caneing a hot hatch in the other direction. But pulling out of a few junctions, the DSC kicked in stop the back wheels spinning and it is very subtle, you hardly know its happened at all except for a little shudder and the light on the dash comming on. So much better than some of the very intrusive systems on other cars, and infinitely perferable to sitting at the junction spinning the front wheels of the MX3 when too much power was applied.

This car really is too good, I hardly feel deserving to get this much enjoyment for so little money.

Cheers
---Dave
