I have just had a call from Mazda UK, responding to my inquiry on Friday.
Mazda UK say the Mazda RX-8 has definitely NOT been group rated for insurance.
They did not know that Mazda Insurance had been in touch with pre-orderers to give them quotes.
They are not happy bunnies about this.
The car will be rated 'nearer the release date'. They couldn't give me a guess as to what it will be rated at, but that's fair enough. I think we have all worked out where the car should be rated at. They have said that as soon as they know the insurance grouping they will give me a call, which is nice :p
They don't even have official emissions figures yet either.
So, we need to wait and see what happens.
If anyone else gets contacted by Mazda Insurance, please post here. I'd be interested to know whether the disinformation from Mazda Insurance has been stopped.

I noted the following comment from Mazda on this thread:
https://www.rx8club.com/rx-8-media-news-11/mazda-aims-image-boost-new-rx-8-a-3970/
"Customers may also be drawn by the lower insurance costs that come with having four doors instead of the conventional two for sports cars. "
This implies it will be less than group 20.

... and the logic behind that statement is?
It implies that a four door car will be a lower insurance group like for like than a two door car which is classed as bring more sporty.
As to whether it has any bearing or not we will have to wait and see.......

Noticed a recent thread on the main forum regarding insurance
and someone from across the pond whining about $300 premium!
I simply can't believe it. If it's true then we're being ripped off as
usual.
Cheers

Insurance in the US is very expensive. Can't image why though

When living in Virginia I was paying $1500 a year on a Honda CRX. Obviously I paid more because I'm a foreigner, but not by much. And Virginia was not an expensive state. New Jersey has astronomical premiums.
For insurance at least, we do quite well.
