Increase in Road Tax for Cyprus Rotary Owners
#104
Only just searched and found this thread.
I live in Paralimni and have been paying €56; last week I logged on to JCC and the figure €514 came up as duty for 2010. However, an error at their end prevented me from continuing and making payment.
I printed off the 'duty due' page, and also last year's and today took to the bank (BoC). The teller made phone calls on my behalf and then told me to not pay for another month as this new rate was being contested in the courts? This made me log on here and search.
Where would I go to sign in Paralimni? Maybe to Stephanides in 1st April St?
I will now go to your Facebook site.
Incidentally, has anyone contacted the English Papers eg Cyprus Mail? Nathan Morley writes for this paper and also is the presenter on Radio Napa.

Road Tax 2010 - Cyprus
Hi Guys. Is there any more news on the road tax situation. I am a Welsh female, and have had my RX8 since Sep 2007. Being on my own, I find the unbelievable increase in one go just toooooo much, but I really do not want to have to part with my beautiful Yellow Peril.

From what we know as also articles in the newpapers the legislation was withdrawn but apparently the department of road transport is not switching the prices back to the normal ones claiming that they are waiting for the court's decision.
You can check the cyprus RX forum:
http://1308rxrotarycyprus.com
Is mainly in Greek but we kept a section for english speaking members/friends. Once you start posting in engish we'll for sure reply and keep you up-to-date.

Apparently they're putting you in line with What other european countries pay, even if the taxes apparently have different purposes.
The average yearly cost in possession\road tax here is 540€ for the rx8 and it is based on the power output (170kw).
Sad to see this happen though

Hi Nicosp76 - I have been on your site, but as all the instructions are in Greek, I have no idea how to join to be able to submit posts! Apologies, I am trying to learn the language. Saw your post in English - and asking, when is the Court decision likely to be given? Will it be before the end of Feb when we all have to pay our road tax or be prosecuted?

Hi Cydee - me either! Looking on the Road Transport web site today, the tax renewal is still showing Euros.514.00. I do hope that the court judgement is given before the end of Feb as even with a letter from the Road Tax Dept, I really do not want to face the wrath of the police!

What a 'home-coming' suprise...
Hey there people fighting the good fight.
I live in the Paralimni area and have had my RX8 for around 3 years now. Unfortunately, I arrived back from the UK (from visiting over the X-mas period) last week only to find out about this, just days away from my car being made a glorified €12,000 paperweight!
I've read all the posts on this forum and hate the fact that I haven't been here to help do anything about it. I work all over the island and if I don't have a car... well, I wouldn't be able to afford the original road tax!
The other major problem is this damn petrol strike. This not only puts us all in a terrible situation when it comes to travelling to and from our means of earning money in the first place, but also makes travelling to petition signings and/or protests unfeasable.
Is there any way a petition could be put online that could be signed by anyone and everyone, no matter where they are? I understand that not everyone has access to the internet, but I'm guessing atleast 95% do.
I really want to do anything I can to stop this idiocy from happening to us all.
Regarding the new website:
I've tried this and cannot seem to find anything about 'english written repies' or 'Road tax issues'. I would like to join the site and play my part but can't seem to find how? I don't want to be a pain but can anybody help out a ignoramus like me that can't read Greek?
I swear, I'm so ignorant that I'd make a GREAT Cypriot politician!

Mazda rotary club cyprus
My apologies guys...
I got so into what is going on here that I didn't pay attention to this forum for quite some time
In short, we have created an "official" club called " MAZDA ROTARY CLUB CYRPUS" and we have come up with come decision. The two major ones are :
1) We found a lawyer to represent us in court and go against this unfair decision for the road tax increament. For this we are registering members for the club as also the ones who want to be part of the lawsuit. (there are financial implications)
2) The coming Satuday , February 27th there will be peaceful "start your engines" protest to the Presidential palace in Nicosia. There will be gathering of all onwers/participants at Makarios Stadium in Nicosia and at 14:30 we will start the actual drive towards the presidential palace.
As there are many details to be discussed/explained, please contact the below people for clarifications and instructions :
Giorgos (Nicosia) : 99513383
Kostas (Nicosia) : 99618796
Nicos (Limassol+all other areas) : 99692076

Cyprus Car Tax Increase on RX8........
OK guys - I expected to see a post as to the protest in Nicosia yesterday! I live in Paphos and for a number of reasons could not attend to support yesterday.
An on-line pettition was suggested but I do not see any sign of one - come on you protest organisers, I would have thought that this would have been one of the first things you would have organised - remember guys - Action Speaks Louder Than Words!
As far as I am aware I am the only female RX8 owner in Cyprus - and I am waiting for the men to take the appropriate action............................ after all I am 56 so you younger bucks need to take the lead and gain signatures and contact the newspapers both Greek and English and contact the radio stations both Greek and English - LETS GET MORE ACTION DONE...................

Cyprus Car Tax Increase on RX8........
VERSUS4582 - when are you going to make a button on your site so that we can "click" to read everything in English? I really do apologise for my and all other RX8 owners who are struggling to learn Greek, and I applaud you for having the command of the English language - but if you are posting all the updates on your site - then we English speaking owners are missing out and therefore can not give our support! The tax increase affects us all - so please assist us all to follow updates!
#123
OK that does it Just went to the local shop and hey presto - a police car stopped me. "You are aware that your tax is out of date as of tomorrow?" "Yes officer - there is a dispute with the Road Traffic Dept re the increase in the road tax for Mazda RX8's which is presently in court as we, RX8 owners received notification that our tax had increased from E.56.00 to E.514.00 per year hence the court action," "We are not aware of this and if we see you on the road tomorrow you will be booked for not having road tax". "Thank you officer."
I came home and have paid my road tax for the next 6 months.
What else was I supposed to do guys? I cannot afford to take on the police and a court action and a fine on top of having to pay the road tax!

Guys,
I posted an update in this forum with phone numbers so you can get all the details 5 days ago. Nobody called me....
I do agree that the updates in english were poor on the cyprus club site and we are trying to improve that part but there was so much work to be done in such a short time
The online pettition will not do any help nor the singature gathering anymore.
We are filing against the new law and each individual had to sign an authorization to the lawer to represent him/her to court of law.
You should understand that such thing requires paperwork and of course payment of the lawyer.
Unfortunately there is a time-limit for such actions and it actually expired
We are welcoming members to our club though ; there is an annual membership fee which will be used for the payment of the lawyer. The verdict of the court will be most probably applicable to all.
Last but not least; the fact that we challenged the new road tax amount doesn't make all the rest of the laws inactive. whoever doesn't pay the road tax by end of day today should not use the car otherwise he/she will get some pretty high fines.
Again,
sorry for the lack of english announcements on the Cyprus forum; we will do our best to improve there.
I do suggest though to use those phone numbers and get information of what happened, what is going on now and what the future plans are.

Displaying Tax Disc!!!!!
OK Guys - on a slightly different note - would you please tell me where if anywhere I am supposed to display the tax disc on my car!
Unbelievably, I have just found out it’s now an offence to display anything in your car window. This includes your car road tax. But does this refer to your windscreen only? Are we supposed to display the car tax on a side window?
I found this out from my insurance company. Not wanting to believe them I asked the Road Transport Office and they confirmed what I was told. So I stopped a copper and asked him and he’s told me yes do not display it in your window OR anything else.
However my friend was told by a policeman over the weekend that they know nothing about such a law!
I try so hard to conform to all the Cyprus laws, rules and regulations - but this one has me baffled!!!
Nicosp76 - can you please advise us of what is what in this regard?
Janalld
