The last stumbling block...

Getting really excited now about the RX-8, but I have one major stumbling block in the way and that is my current car.

My dealer has rung around a few Subaru dealers and the best offer he has got is £16k ffs . A few dealers weren't even interested.

On the Subaru website and dealers forecourts, cars of similar spec are going for £20-21k so I was realistically expecting £17.5-£18 for it. The car was £27.5k when new last March.

I am going to try and sell privately, but am worried about advertising this sort of car in the press as you do hear horror stories of people having the cars stolen etc.

If I can't get a decent price, the RX-8 may have to go on hold

If anyone knows anyone who may be remotely interested in a bargain Impreza and can help me sell it, the details are as follows:

Subaru Impreza WRX STi TypeUK Prodrive Style
UK car registered March 2002
Blue/Black Mica Paint
23k miles by the time I sell it
FSSH just had 20k service and 4 new Goodyear F1s (£500)
265bhp/0-60 in 5.2
6 speed/Brembo's/LSD/17" Alloys/Aircon/Alcantara seats/
Prodrive bodykit/STi reflectors/Smoked Indicators
Always garaged & regularly waxed

Here are a couple of pics:

Dont autotrader it.

Put adverts on scoobynet and pistonheads n stuff.

See who bites.

I'm sure andy can get a glass guide price for it (may need the licence plate no).

But scoobies do get hit with depreciation, especialy in the first year, when a new model has been introduced, and the old one hevily discounted.

To sum up : Buy a car new = sucka.

<-- sucka. I hope either I love the 8 so much I dont sell, or its 4 year residuals are great ...

Hooray at long last someone has experienced slightly more depreciation than me......... My 728 had lost £13000 in just under three years. But factor in very hefty running costs and I still win the "losers game" this time with those being almost £12000 now.
So 13+12=£25k. The 13 is a paper loss tho as I am not selling.

I do feel for you though Mark as any money lost is painful.
How about we all drop the idea of a new car,
tape the new Discovery H&L series, pick your favourite car out of the series and buy the£600 banger then do it up for £500, then contemplate selling it at a profit of £300. (forget that it took tonnes of hours of work)
Who knows given enough time you may have enough to buy the RX8 cash (not!!)

Between 70-80k it blew up/broke/leaked/failed many different parts:
short block at 44k (nikasil issue - paid for by BMW)
water pump
tie rods
A/C condensor
A/C evaporator
auxiliary fan
VANOS unit
seat airbag sensor
alternator
wishbones
upper control arms
rear lower suspension bushes
front struts
rear shock abosrbers
top rubber shock absorber mounts
thermostat
rear heatshields
business radio head
Instrument cluster due to pixel loss
fuel pump last week
knackered sound insulation when fuel pump removed (daft BMW breakdown man but hey he never charged me labour)

I will have missed some items but you get the jist of it.

I guess it wasnt in warenty then?

Big exec/german type cars arnt pretty when they go wrong.

Knew someoen with an alpina 7 series (at the time one of only a few in the country), late 80's. Everything electrical went wrong.

Even had the steering lock up @ 90mhp on motorways, whilst the car opened up all the windows n sunroof etc. well past badly designed/built.

... and people claim to buy BMs for 'quality' rather than the badge.

If this is typical , then why is the badge held in the esteem that it is ? I think that list is disgusting !

I mean 'wishbones' ? Mein gott - that is major stuff ..... Maybe if it was 15 years old I could accept it...

think we all have the same problem.

My is200 has the same problem, the longer i hold onto it the more value it looses, on the otherhand as i pay the finance off on a monthly basis i pay of more than it depreciates.

The dealer offered me around 10250 p/x( possibly more on condition). however I see the same car on Lexus website going for anything up to £15k

still got 6500 grand finance to pay off so even if i only get 10250 for it i still make a few quid.

Guess i could get more if i sell privately but i need the car every day and cant rely on a "banger" to get me from A to B.

Angry Dealers

Sorry to read that, Mark - that really sucks.

I sold my VX220 privately for £13500

Best Trade offer from local Vauxhall dealer was £12750

Dealer then tells me my private buyer got a "bargain" as they're advertising one at £16995 for the same age/spec/mileage on the forecourt.

Aaarrgggghhh

Yet if I beat him to a bloody pulp they'd call ME the criminal

Now carless for the first time in 21 years....

Mark , if I find out that my two passengers don't fit in the RX8 then I might be interested (but only if you respray it blue! )

It's a serious post btw - I was considering a new STi (which I can get for exactly the same cost as the RX8 I've ordered) if the RX8 turned out to be no good for me, but I'd be tempted by a second hand one that I believe has been treated well.

Will have to wait until I get a chance to take out an RX8 without a moonroof to see though which may be a little late for you.

Thanks Andy.

I had a WR Blue one previously (too common ), but the black is a little more understated and looks awesome when clean in the sunlight when the blue flecks are visible.

I think it would probably be too late by then, but if I cant sell it privately I may well have to hang on for a buyer anyway.

Is it true what Rob says that you can get a glass 's price for it? Even my dealer told me the £16k is below book price. I can PM you the reg in needed.

Thanks
Mark

M3 Coupe - available now

I'm in the same position , I need to sell my M3 Coupe by the end of the month, dealer offers are shockingly bad at the moment. I have now priced it below what a dealer will sell it for so hence a bargain M3 if anyone can help me, details as below :

On Pistonheads already

20,500 miles. July 2002, Titanium Silver, 6 speed Manual, UK car.

Optional Extras:
Rare Laguna Seca Blue Exclusive Nappa Leather - (A surprisingly different colour combination)
19" Alloys
Front Centre Arm Rest
Climate Comfort WindScreen
6 Disc CD Boot Changer
Harman/Kardon Hi-fi - 10 speaker system
Electric Glass Sunroof
Electric Memory Heated Seats
No Smoking Package
Well looked after, always Handwashed and Zymol wax treated. Very good condition.

3 months road tax and two new rear tyres included.
2 years BMW warranty still remaining.

Taken from October Glass's:

Subaru Impreza WRX STi (prodrive)
2002 02 19,000 miles
Glass's retail (normally means full wack dealer fourcourt)
= £20, 850
Glass's Trade (this price is usually more than Cap prices)
= £18,850
Take approx £500 off these figures for mileage of 23k.

None of these prices take into account any extras.

Lucozade, here are your prices.

BMW M3 2002 02 Manual coupe, 19,000 miles

Glass's retail = £36,725

Glass's trade = £33,725

Doesn't list a code for mileage adjustment but I would have thought somewhere between £300 and £500 off those prices.

Maybe add approx £1000 for extras, again no coding for the extras.
Hope this helps.

Cheers 18ME

And the robbing stewards offer me £16k

Ive just put it on Scoobynet and Pistonheads for £17500 with a hope it will shift. Bargain for someone who is in the market for one though

No problem Mark. I hope you have some luck.

I suppose we are really all in the same boat. I was offered £1000 less than I paid for the R32 new 4 months ago by a dealer last week and thought that insulting at the time due to their limited numbers, but I know everything will devalue eventually.

Have you tried www.findit.co.uk its free with as many words as you like. I sold my Porsche from this site at £41k and didn't pay a penny in advertising.

M3

Lucozade
Are you getting rid of the M3 to get the 8?
If so why?
It's just I want an M3 but haven't the cash yet so I have gone for the 8 as a stop-gap for a year. Surely, while the mazda is a good/great car it isn't in the same league as your M3?
I would be interested to know why you want to swop it? (Other than to release £10-£15K).
Have you test driven the 8 yet if so what was it like compared to your M3?

Please don't think I am trying to slight the mazda but I am genuinely interested in your thoughts about comparing the two.

Regards
Ric

Hi Ric,

I'm in Preston, that's weird eh?!

Anyway, I'm bored of the M3 - shocking as that may sound it just doesn't do it for me. The interior is boring, it rattles, squeeks and is generally unispiring. My last two cars were a TVR Tuscan and a TVR Cerbera. I got the M3 as a reliable car with similar performance. But really I miss the raw power of the TVR's.

I've wasted sooo much money on cars that it's time to get sensible. The M3 just doesn't "float my boat", it might have loads of power but it's not got a decent noise or interior. I ordered blindly and paid the price!

I haven't test drove the RX-8 yet although I have sat in one.

I'm not all that bothered about cars anymore because nothing will top it for me like the way the TVR's did.

However, as looks and interior go I think the RX-8 has got the lot. If the performance is really really down on what I have been used to then I may have to reconsider and, bummer, keep the M3.
