So , cars have a gender..?

Most cars seem to have a gender, personaly I think the RX-8 is 'Male' as its sleek, powerfull and curvy, but the curves have a hard edge to them rather than say something like a supra or old celica etc.

So whatcha think? Kinda important if the cars to get a name too! I know, but my wife always likes to name things :D

Sorry Rob but genderising machines is one of my pet hates. It is an 'it'. Similary I dislike car manufacturers naming their cars with proper nouns ('Mondeo', 'Golf', 'Sharon' etc) when a simple designation code (like for example 'RX-8') is so much cooler.

I am glad that someone else has noticed this. I have always thought it strange that premium cars have numbers or letters and not so premium ones have names...!! For example:

BMW: 3/5/7 series/Z4
Merc: SL/CLK/E/S Class
Audi: A2/3/4/6/8/TT
Porche: 911
Ferrari: 360/456/575
SAAB: 93/95
Lexus: IS/LS
Volvo: V70/S60
Alfa: 147/156/GTV
Aston: DB7

Exceptions: Bentley Continental

Ford: Puma/Focus/Fiesta/Modeo
Vauxhall: Vectra/Zafira/Corsa
VW: Golf/Polo/Passat
Toyota: Prius/Avensis/Previa
Citroen: Saxo/Pluriel/Picasso
Daewoo: Nubira/Kalos
Daihatsu: Charade/Sirion
Fiat: Panda/Punto/Multipla

Has Mazda noticed this and decided to position itself as a premium car (without premium prices?)

RX8/6/2/3/5...?

Premium?:
Peuguot: digit0digit
Renault: 5 (before moving downmarket with Meganes etc)

I did hear that some companies tried to 'copyright' numbers and failed, and that is one of the reasons we now have pentiums (da dadum dee - how I hate that) and celerons instead of 586, 686, 786s etc.
Cars like ships have traditionally been female to the sort of people who think of large metal objects as living things. It's not male (I would want to be spending that much time with it and admiring it's good looks) and it's not female (at least I hope it won't be that temperamental, or drive off without me) it's a car.

That depends if your dealing with hackneyed old sayings or science/maths. The exception does make the rule wrong and you need to include the exception in a new rule. Unless you can identify all the exceptions you don't have a rule, just an observation - which is quite good enough for a web forum.

Some more for you:
Rolls Royce: Silver Wotsit
Lotus: Esprit
Fiat: 124
