Spare Tyre Replacement?

I don't know if anyone is aware of this product, but i think it looks pretty interesting. I know a few bikers who have used it for a while with no complaints.

It is applied through your valve before you get any puntures (though can be applied after!). If you get a puncture the product immediately (through centrifugal force) fills the puncture and seals it.

I understand the cost is around £50 for all 4 tyres. Seems reasonable to me, if it works. And is much cheaper and more practical than getting the spare tyre in the boot.

I know we have a kit with the car, but prevention is better than a cure, and a temporrary cure at that!

Doesn't the kit which comes with the car come with one of these?

As I understand it, the kit which comes with the car is for use if you have a puncture. It works on one tyre only, and is a temporary fix. You are supposed to go straight to a tyre shop and get it replaced (please correct me if i'm wrong).

The ultraseal stuff is a permanent solution, as long as the puncture is not really severe.

That appears to be the "party line" from Mazda. According to the Owner's Manual:

The ultraseal stuff is a permanent solution, as long as the puncture is not really severe. It should stop you getting the puncture in the first place.

there is an alternative:-

you could buy a wheel from me to keep in case of emergency...................... & then i could afford to buy the polished alloys!!

I saw this product at the motor show last year (if it's the same one).

On the stand they had a little 13" tyre, looked like it was from a ride-on lawnmover. lol. Anyway, they filled it with their stuff and sat ther stabbing away at it with a knife, and it never deflated. As soon as they punctured it it sealed itself.

I think it works by having lots of tiny rubber particles suspended in a liquid. When you burst a tyre, the air pressure forces the liquid out, and the rubber particles plug the hole. Well, thats the idea.

Seemed to work on the display, but it worried me that you'd never really know if you'd received a puncture once you put this stuff in the tyre. I didn't like the sound of doing some silly speeds (obviously not on the road officer ) with a tyre held together by liquid rubber particles...

I hear what you are saying sixpeed, but i'd rather use the stuff and not suffer a puncture though! I think that if you do get a big one, which could cause a nasty crash at motorway speeds with no ultraseal, the worst it would do would be to deflate slowly. So it may be safer also?

Yes I was worried about the speed issue. However, according to their web site they have tested tyres up to 150 mph.

I will probably buy an additional wheel to leave in the garage as a spare - usualy will be able to get back home with just the tyre repairer , then I can swap 1 and get the spare replaced.

Sorry been away.

Have only seen price on "japan garage" in Yen! (haven't had the heart to convert)

Can't believe that they are going to be cheap!! (who knows Mazda may shock us !)

It would however be very nice to pick up the 8 with all of the extras added (and before my squander demon is tracked down & killed!!)so will post as & when have better idea on prices.

Hi All

My current car was supplied with the tyre repair goo instead of a spare. We too had a discussion on our forum about this, and opinion was divided as to whether the tyre could be reused if the repair stuff was used. Some tyre depots were happy to repair the tyre, others said that the tyre was useless due to the goo.
I used the car for long journeys thro Europe and decided that a space saver spare would be the best option. (Trying not to think about what to do with the normal wheel if I did get a puncture). Is there a space saver available for the RX8 and is there room for one anyway?

Yes, Adrian there is.

It comes with a frame that enables it to be mounted in the back part of the boot. You will oose almost half the boot space though!

Not sure about the price but I'm sure you've read on here already that accessory pricing seems to be under review.

Ill have to have a good look at the options list.
I desperately want to place an order, but Im holing back until I see one in the flesh. I have to be sure that there is enough room in the back seat for my son. My local dealer says that there are no cars available anywhere to view and definitely no test drives. Of course reading on here, I now know different, so Ill have to contact dealers further away.
I dont anticipate any problems with luggage space (even with the space saver) or leg room, but I have to get approval from the wife as well. Usually I have a shortlist of 3 or 4 cars that I like and ask her to choose one, that way she thinks she has made the decision and I get a car I like. Wonder what the reaction will be when I give her a shortlist of one.

Unless you son is over 6" tall then there should be no problem, there really is a surprising amount of rear room.

There is almost as much room as a standard saloon in the back, your lad fitting really shouldn't be a problem.

That's a gross exaggeration. The spare tire kit certainly takes up some boot space, but it's not even 20%, let alone anywhere near 50%!

Thanks for the correction Eccles, I was just going from pictures.

We still haven't seen one over here!

It's good to know it won't steal too much room. Although must bear in mind if the spare is needed the full size tyre will need to go in the boot.
