To Supaguard or not to Supaguard

Does anyone know if Supaguarding (protective coating - £300 from dealer) the interior and exterior works, or is worth the money ?

Sorry Mate, I've had no experience of it.

Is it on offer then?

Cheers

I was offered it when I ordered, and agreed to put it on the order on the basis I can cancel it as long as I let them know before the car arrives and is done.

From what Ive read elsewhere, I wouldnt bother as a) you can get it done cheaper independantly, and b) it relies upon you always cleaning your car with thier recommended products or the warrany is void.

Needless to say I will be informing them I dont want it done on mine nearer the time.

They just use stuff you can buy yourself. The exterior is just treated to a Polymer Sealant - Autoglym High Gloss, Zaino Z2/5 or Klasse Sealant Glaze are all the same stuff.

I have all three of these products stashed in my garage, so if you're that bothered I'll come round and do it for ya for free! :p (or maybe a few drinks... )

Definately NOT worth £300 tho!!

I've been looking at Zymol to wash/treat the car when it comes.

I got an email from them after an enquiry that you can see below if anybody is interested. It's not cheap, but it seems to be the best. There's even a forum on Aftercare where this is discussed at length.

'Thank you for your enquiry into zymöl auto care products.

I can advise that the best option for you to treat your car would be to purchase a starter kit or a complete kit.

A starter kit would give you everything you need as a minimum, or a complete kit, this offers all that is in a starter kit plus wheel care items, additional cleaners and cloths.

The above kits will come with a choice of wax, for your RX8 I would suggest that you choose one of either Carbon wax, Titanium Glaze or Concours Glaze.

Japon wax contains 37% carnauba (100% yellow carnauba by volume)

Titanium glaze contains 51% Carnauba (80% yellow 20% white by volume)

Concours glaze contains 47% Carnauba (90% White 10% yellow by volume)

It is the increase in the Carnauba content and type that will give the added protection. The increased levels of white carnauba will give a greater depth of shine and reflection, a warm wet look is the only way I can describe the fantastic finish the Concours glaze provides.

For the wax provided within these kits then i can advise that you only need to wax the car every 2-3 months and just wash and chamois in between those periods. The HD-Cleanse stage which is provided within these kits is to be done at least every 12 months.

If you have any further enquiries then please do not hesitate to contact us.

Kind Regards

To be honest, been there, done that. I bought Zymol for my old MX-5 about 2 years ago. Thought it was the absolute dogs danglies after the sales pitch and also the price of the stuff - you get what you pay for right? Wrong..

Not to say that it doesn't give a good shine, but there are sooo many other products that work as well, if not better, for a fraction of the price and effort required (try using anything more than the Japon or Carbon waxes and you'll end up looking like Arnie when you're done!).

If you want a Carnauba wax, try One Grand Blitz Wax. Price? About £14.00 to you sir. Polish, well - Autoglym Super Resin is perfectly fine, and is readily available over here. Meguiars is another good choice, or you could use Klasse All-In-One (might need to order from overseas).

I'm not going to knock the results with Zymol, just say that I thought it was the best thing ever until I did a little more research and tried a few more products and found that you can get the same for less...

Andy,

You're a mighty fine feller sir. I've taken your advice and ordered the Blitz stuff. I'll try that on my MX3 before the RX8 comes (probably get to try the Meguiars as well before October/November).

So - you've saved me £200. - It might pay for an RX8 accessory (but probably not).

Wow.. that was quick. Where did you order it from? Frosts?

If you want a few more recommendations - I use Meguiars Gold Class Shampoo (nice and mild so doesn't strip your wax off, suds up well, and just does a pretty good job for a fiver a bottle). Also, if you've bought the wax, get hold of some foam applicator pads. I use the Meguiars ones as well just because they're easy for me to get hold of. Any will do. They do them in packs of 4 for about 3.99. I get them from my local A1 Car Spares shop, or you can order them straight from the Meguiars website (www.meguiars.co.uk).

I have heard some positive things on on Meguiars product although at present working with Autoglym on my TTC with which I am very pleased.

Just one note, I have seen the words 'carwash' and 'polish' beimng used!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have bo idea what the quality of the paint will be but never put a car through the car wash, it will mark. If the car is looked after properly and regularly cleaned then a wash and leather will only take about an hour every time.

And never use polish, it is abrasive. After cleaning use a resin or wax to seal and protect as well as shine.

I don't want to all doom and gloom, but a collegue of mine was going to have a similar protective coating (Diamond guard ?) on his TT interior but heard it works by "soaking" into the fabric/leather. This chemical can, if sat on shortly after, also "soak" into skin, hence having slightly carsinogenic properties. I hope he's wrong, but thought I'd mention it. Do any of these treatments warn of this ?

Rael,

Not all products labelled as a "polish" are abrasive. It depends on which product you use.

Admittedly on a brand new paint finish you shouldn't need to polish, but these cars will have been sitting at shipping ports and been subjected to the elements a little. Your dealer will clean it all up before delivery of course, but it depends on how good a job they do as well. A polish will be able to remove swirl marks (if there are any), either by flattening the paint (an abrasive) or masking them (using oils or "fillers") and generally clean up the finish. Once that has been done, you'll then want to coat with a wax or sealant to protect it.

I wouldn't say never use a polish but certainly it's not something you need to do every time you clean the car. Maybe once or twice a year at the most.

Sixspeed, looking at some RX*s already delivered, they come covered in a white plastic film thats removed by the dealer . I've also known some new cars (Nissan and Toyota) covered in a thick white cream/wax that is also removed by the dealer.
