To Tint, or not to Tint?

I am really keen on getting the windows in my Titanium Grey RX-8 tinted but don't want to look like a dodgy drug dealer. I suppose I would need to get an X5 for that :-)

There's a guy at
http://www.rx8forum.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=7318
who got his silver done and there's a pic of the Tit gray on the way (as soon as the guy finds his camera connection lead!)

Does anybody know a place in the South East (of England) that they can recommend? I know about Pentagon (www.pentagonglasstech.com) who do a hell of a lot of business for car dealers in the are - Chryslers, Mercs etc.. but they are quoting just under £400 for the RX-8, whereas our friend Stateside paid $220 for a professional job.

Danny,

Im going to get mine done, but not so dark they look black.

Pentagon are probably the best, but most expensive.

I was going to get my scoob done, but never got round to it. Not much help to you, but there is a guy on scoobynet who seems to do a good job in the midlands. He charges around £200 for an Impreza, and I would not expect an Rx-8 to be any more, as its windows are smaller.

Should give yoy some idea of price though.

I think the way of avoiding the 'dealer/pimp' look is DON'T GO TOO DARK.

£400 for tints? Is that about usual? As the guy on the thread mentioned below says - there's nothing worse than a crappily applied tint. Mind you, looking at some of the options pricing from Mazda £400 might be considered cheap for the effect it has on the overall look of the car.

I'm REALLY looking forward to our guy State-side posting pics of his Tit Grey with tints... should look awesome.

When I spoke to Rob @ T W Whites he said they had someone locally the use and it would cost "around £200"

No further info other than this, but I will get it done at max legal tint - kids in the back means that I dont have to get an odd-fitting sunblind.

BTW.....The tint job on the Rx-8 was mildly difficult as reported by tint shop. The rear window was surprisingly easy ( as it has a wicked bend in it) BUT, the front passenger window had to be done 3 times. A "2 step heat shrinking" method was used. This was due to several subtle bends in the glass.
So ....you cant tell how hard it will be or price for that matter until they look at it, or done it before.
my pics are linked in the first post to this thread

www.scoobynet.co.uk is the Subaru Impreza UK equivalent to this forum.

Must say, Gyro's tints look really good, about what I am looking for, but I will probably have the same all the way round.

I'll get the darkest the dealers do. That way I will stay legal and have full recource.

Tinting

Hey Euro Roterers

Just got my car tinted today. In FL tinters are a dime a dozen and different tints are something too - smoke, copper, blue, red rainbow.

Just a word of advice. The interior is black. In FL the legal tint limit is 35% . I picked a 30% shade which looked only slightly smokey in the shop but when I saw it on the car it was dark. As a matter of fact from the side view I could not see in however, from the back could see through to the front of the car.

Tinting is done here primarily to ward off heat and provide privacy. If you think you might look like a Euro Pimp go for the lighter but tinting really looks good on the silver (see tint thread pics) and on my blue. - see below

Here is a blue RX8 with 30% tint and notice how the black interior enhances the darkness. Note that you can slightly see the other car thru the side window.

I've just been wondering about this, looking at the darkness of your tinting.

does 30% mean that 70% of the light can still get through, or 30% of the light can get through?

I believe that the number indicates the darkness of the tint. So a 30% tint is darker than a 20% tint.

For front side/front ws legallaly your allowd 27% tint, or 73% of light must get through.

Rear windows are whatever you want.

In the US, anyway, the tint percentage refers to the amount of light that gets through. 20% tint is darker than 30%.

And thats the difference then!!!!

70% in the UK means 30% in US speak.

Ours is the amount of light not through yours is the amount of light let through.

So...get 50% and that will put an end to any confusion
:p

Just be sure that whatever you put on conforms to your legal constraints. It's a total PITA to remove in some cases.

according to my tint pamphlet the tint is 30% shaded -

blocking 48.7% heat
97% UV rays

all I know is that is is noticably darker inside. My beige interior car had 35% and it did not seem nearly as dark as this.
