Question Worth Pre Ordering Now?

Hello All

I've been lurking in the forum for a while now, so it's time to say hello and ask for some advice if I may.

I'm sold on the RX8 (I currently drive a Y plate BMW 318Ci I've had from new and I'm not impressed with it at all - but that's another story!)

Do you think there is any advantage to pre-ordering an 8 at this late stage? Needlesss to say the dealer I visited was trying to get me to do so.

The only real advantage I can think of would be that I will get a car sometime around the end of the year/start of next, even if there is a surge in interest once the demo cars arrive in the dealerships.

Main disadvantge is that I wont have a firm trade in price for my BMW and the dealer may try to give me base price for it (its low milage and in excellent nick! - I do less that 8K per year) when the time comes. I dont want to be held to ransom and end up having to cancel the order.

Any advantages to pre-ordering now that I've missed?

Cheers

Murphy

Firstly, hi and welcome oh lurkalicious one!

Only that theres going to be 3000 cars a year into the country, and that apparently 2000 have been sold now, of which 1000 are on their way here (we hope!)

Depending on how long you've been lurking will give more info - I've certainly been massively aware of the newcomers here, new pre-orderers or just interested since the new wave of media hype has hit the streets and TV screens. Once the car is out, there will be (I hope) a lot more people who want the car, and then the waiting list may be as long as your arm - theres a lot who like to see/touch/feel and then place an order, and if thats the case, then it could be 2004 (!) until you get a car if you wait until November. So what, you lose £100 if you cancel the pre-order? Or if the spec DOES change (not going into this again!) then you could be allowed all £1000 back. So £100 at risk for something you want? Well you could easily lose that in depreciation on your other car, or a naff trade in price.

Your call though, I'm biased! :D

I would advise pre-ordering now and you might just get lucky ...

If you choose hi-power and one of the launch colours (red, black, or titanium) and leather, you may just pick up one of the cancellations from the other disgruntled pre-orderers.

Also, there's going to be a second shipment in December, so you might just sneek into that.

Your call though.

Murphy,

At the risk of sounding like a Mazda dealer, I'd pre-order if I were you. At least you get the car you want as soon as you can.

Some of us poor sods pre-ordered 6 months ago and are still waiting. I still dont know what p/x Im gonna get on my car, but if it is ridiculous I can still walk away and expect my full deposit back.

On the other hand, any more delays or problems, and there may well be a lot of cars available, due the the number of cancellations they will have on their hands.

Thanks for the feedback guys! (and for the welcome and new word renegade_si - lurkalicious!!)

I'll be honest here and admit that you are saying what I want to hear! My heart says "Order the damn car" and my head says "What?! - You haven't even seen it yet!!"

I've picked up on the pretty depressed mood on the forum lately and if anything it's been puting me off as I sink into the communal gloom over the delays, lack of information and Mazda's poor handling of the situation.

I've also been looking at the VW Golf R32 and the new R32 based A3 but they just dont have the looks and character, not to mention rotary engine of the 8!

So I'll take a wander down to my dealer next weekend and see what he says to me ordering a 231ps in Titanium with black leather. I'll see if I can get some assurances on getting my deposit back if the trade in he eventually offers isnt up to scratch.

... and if it all goes horribly wrong, I can always tell my wife that you guys "persuaded" me :D

Thanks too renegade_si and Mark for the reviews after your test drives - really enjoyed them.

Cheers
